The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Larry Rosen, together with presenting sponsor TotalBank, present JAZZ ROOTS: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series – JAZZ AND THE PHILHARMONIC on January 11, 2013 in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. This unprecedented music event will explore the intersection where jazz and classical music meet, featuring a distinguished roster of jazz and classical musicians, as well as rising stars. Produced jointly with YoungArts and the UM Frost School of Music, the concert is the third in a series of six concerts during the 2012-2013 JAZZ ROOTS Fifth Anniversary Season.

The program, directed by Larry Rosen, will showcase legendary vocal innovator and multi- Grammy winner and YoungArts HBO Master Teacher BOBBY MCFERRIN, NEA Jazz Master and 16-time Grammy winner CHICK COREA, acclaimed American bass-baritone and 1988 YoungArts alumnus ERIC OWENS, multi-Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer/arranger and pianist DAVE GRUSIN, violin virtuoso MARK O’CONNOR, and noted Concord Records jazz pianist, Dean of the University of Miami Frost School of Music and YoungArts Master Teacher Shelly Berg,  as well as the University of Miami Frost School of Music’s HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA, featuring Grammy-winning trumpeter, film composer, 1981 YoungArts alumnus, and Artistic Director of the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute TERENCE BLANCHARD, and classical piano virtuoso and YoungArts alumna ELIZABETH ROE, who was named one of the classical music world’s “Six on the Rise: Young Artists to Watch” by Symphony Magazine. The evening will be hosted by internationally celebrated dancer/choreographer and Broadway star  DESMOND RICHARDSON, who will also showcase his dazzling modern dance prowess in an improvisational work with BOBBY MCFERRIN, among other dances. Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the great modern dancers of his time,” RICHARDSON is a former principal with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and American Ballet Theater, and a 1986 YoungArts alumnus.

The concert will feature the talents of these acclaimed artists performing themes by the world’s greatest composers – including Bach, Debussy, Aaron Copland, Henry Mancini, DAVE GRUSIN, CHICK COREA and TERENCE BLANCHARD -- in a mix of orchestral stylings and jazz improvisations.  Highlights of the program include a duet by DAVE GRUSIN and MARK O’CONNOR in Mountain Dance, one of GRUSIN’s most significant compositions; ERIC OWENS as soloist in a selection from TERENCE BLANCHARD’s Champion,  an opera based on the story of prizefighter Emile Griffith, which will receive its world premiere in June 2013 at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis;  Spanish Suite, which is based on COREA’s renowned composition, Spain, and JoaquĆn Rodrigo’s ever-popular Concierto de Aranjuez. The program will also offer the unique opportunity to experience duet and trio performances by MCFERRIN, GRUSIN, and COREA. The evening will culminate with an explosive grand finale, featuring the famous fanfare from Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra, which was used as the main theme in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In celebration of the JAZZ ROOTS Fifth Anniversary Season, this concert is an historic collaboration between the Arsht Center, the University of Miami Frost School of Music, and The National YoungArts Foundation, marking the first time that these three Miami-based arts and educational institutions have collaborated in an integrated program. The concert is also one of the special events during YoungArts Week 2013, which draws the nation’s top young artists in the visual, literary, and performing arts to Miami for performances and exhibits at the city’s top cultural venues.
