Reverend Billy C. Wirtz is a comic genius, gifted pianist and American musicologist who defies easy classification.  Likely the only person on earth to be mentored by Chicago blues pianist Sunnyland Slim and also to work with Root Boy Slim (of Bob Greenlee's King Snake Records, out of Sanford), Wirtz has also worked with the famed DC Blues band the Nighthawks, starting back when Jimmy Thackery was a member.

FACEBOOK EVENT - Invite a friend!

A Centennial Celebration of the music of Charles Mingus, presented by the MICHAEL ROSS 5, will be presented at the Tampa Jazz Club’s concert at Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City, on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 3:00pm. Held in the beautiful Mainstage Theatre, these programs are part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series.

An iconoclastic visionary, Mingus was a virtuoso bassist and a groundbreaking composer and bandleader. Strongly influenced by Duke Ellington and by the Black church, using creative textures and group improvisation, he helped chart the course of modern jazz from the 50s into the mid-70s. Reflecting on the continued vibrancy of this music years later, writer Kevin Whitehead said, “It’s bluesy, heartfelt, intricate, and infectious. The high spirits and passion are built in.”

MICHAEL ROSS has been a fixture on the Florida jazz scene for many years. In the early 80s, he joined, and soon led, Liquid Bebop, a band that holds a big place in Bay Area jazz history. More recently, he’s put the spotlight on his original music, with an engaging series of quartet recordings, and some of Michael’s new pieces will also be featured.

Members of this band – MICHAEL ROSS, bass, with DANIEL JORDAN and DAVID PATE, saxophone and flute, and JOHN JENKINS, drums – have played together (and played Mingus) for decades. And they’re joined by the terrific pianist PABLO ARENCIBIA, a Bay Area favorite since moving here from Spain in 2018. Please join us to celebrate the genius of Mingus, and get to know some of Florida’s finest musicians, at HCC/Ybor City, with THE MICHAEL ROSS 5!
