THREE BIG BLUES SHOWS - ONE PLACE, ONE NIGHT, ONE LAST TIME IN 2019 in Gainesville FL

Guitars and Blues.
Each a Whole Show on Their Own!

The Last Big Blues Party
of 2019!

The North Central Florida Blues Society is throwing a birthday party for Bridget Kelly Band guitarist Tim Fik, and it will be a Blues guitar showcase including Chicago’s Toronzo Cannon, Ft. Lauderdale’s Albert Castiglia, and Gainesville’s Tim Fik, along with soulful Buffalo singer Patti Parks.

Chicago Bluesman Toronzo Cannon defies all expectations. The blistering guitarist, soulful vocalist, singular songwriter and city bus driver fuses his muscular, rock-inspired Blues guitar playing with his original, keenly detailed slice-of-life songs, blazing his own Blues trail. Cannon has burst onto the international stage as one the most electrifying Bluesmen to emerge from Chicago in decades. His live performances unfailingly earn him heaps of critical praise and hordes of wildly enthusiastic fans.

“It’s not about the solos,” Cannon says, “It’s about the songs. People get used to everyday life, so it’s easy to miss the things around them. I write about those things. I know the problems of Chicago, the hardship, ’cause we’re always a scapegoat. But I choose to love and respect the city because of the Chicago Blues giants that came here from down south. I’m proud to be standing on the shoulders of every great Chicago Blues musician who came before me.”

Albert Castiglia has developed into one of the more exciting talents to emerge on the Blues scene in a while. A guitar player full of fire, but also showing a considerable songwriting gift, Albert has gained the respect of hardcore Blues addicts and younger Blues-rockers alike.

Born in New York City and raised in Miami, Albert learned a lot by playing with Blues legend Junior Wells, and he continues to grow as a player and performer. Never content to allow himself to be confined to any particular category, he embarked on a solo career that’s yielded eight critically acclaimed album and constant kudos for his exceptional instrumental prowess, his searing vocals, and live performances that have dazzled audiences from coast to coast. It’s little wonder that Miami’s New Times lauded him as South Florida’s “Best Blues Guitarist” or that USA Today was inspired to remark “It’s a revelation to discover the thrilling retro-electric Blues from this astonishing young guitarist.”

“I think Blues is a wide-open net,” Castiglia said. “There are a lot of different ways to do it…I’ve taken a lot of heat for what I do. Some people think I’m too edgy to be considered a Blues artist. On the other hand, I don’t think that people like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf would have wanted me copying them and redoing their stuff. There’s no point in doing that. They would want me to do my own stuff.”

Patti Parks has a reputation as being a riveting live performer who has earned her acclaim as the Best Female Blues Vocalist, awarded by Night Life Magazine Blues Music Awards. She is a member of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, and has participated in the International Blues Challenge and the National Women in The Blues showcase. She is most known for her Blues Music Therapy program that Parks, a nurse, has created in order to give back to her fans and community. The program uses the Blues genre as a vehicle of expression for those struggling with drug dependency or who otherwise are at risk.

The Bridget Kelly Band, a two-time semifinalist at the International Blues Challenge, is inspired by classic & electric Blues. The Bridget Kelly Band has placed their unique stamp on the Blues-rock genre with high-energy live performances and a hybrid sound that mixes Texas Blues with various Southern Blues traditions. The sultry vocals of singer Bridget Kelly and incendiary lead guitar work of Tim Fik forge a signature sound that combines female urban Blues with dynamic riff-driven Blues, all held together by a rugged rhythm section. Fik has gained renown for his powerful guitar sound and fiery fretwork and he has even been called a “magician of the instrument” and a “pinnacle of artistry” in recent reviews, and praised for his tasteful tone, fluidity, and expressiveness.

General Admission is $20.  NCFBS members get in for $10!

Born in Vineland, New Jersey, Joe’s parents encouraged him to start studying the sax at the tender age of Five. Gary Hoey's "Neon Highway Blues" Release Tour Comes to Florida's Space Coast

A veteran of both the
Rock Legends Cruise
AND the
Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise
w/ over 50 US and international festivals
and concerts already this year -
highlighted by the Big Blues Bender!

Saturday, October 26, 2019 ~ 8pm
Wynfield's Sports Bar
190 Highway A1A
Satellite Beach, Fl 32937
 (321)773-8460

Whether Hoey is playing scorching original pieces or new takes on classic rock covers, his solos are thrilling and reminiscent of Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. One thing that remains the same is Hoey’s command of the guitar. He attacks it with intensity and then plays something soft and achingly beautiful. This ability to mix feeling, phrasing, technique and tone is the true mark of the master guitarist.

When Gary Hoey was 14, he hung around the prestigious Berklee College of Music, near his hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts. He made friends with students and graduates and offered to pay them for lessons. It was the only way he could afford them. “I learned how to read and write music through the back door,” he said in a 2007 interview. “It gave me some background in jazz and some theory, which helped me with my rock. It gave me things to focus on and more to practice. That was kind of how I learned.”

Hoey dropped out of high school and began playing local clubs. In the late 1980s, he auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne. It was am experience that changed his life. “Ozzy came to Boston and was on the radio, talking about looking for a guitar player,” he said. “I sent a demo and I got a call about a week later, saying they really liked it and that they’d be flying me to California. I flew out there and got to play with Ozzy. (Black) Sabbath was one of my main influences, so it was a dream come true.”

Hoey was on the short list for the job, but although he didn’t get it, he took Osbourne’s advice and moved to the West Coast. He drove cross-country with a rental truck and within five years, had a major label record deal and a manager. He went on to record more than 20 albums and is considered among the top 100 guitarists. His 2013 album, Deja Blues, brought him back to his bluesy roots and his latest work, “Neon Highway Blues,” continues the journey. It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart.

Joe Satriani, himself a guitar hero, admires Hoey’s latest work. “It’s great to hear Gary sing and play the blues with his trademark intensity, feel and authenticity,” he said, “And the guitar tones are both vintage and modern at the same time.”

MISS KITTY DANIELS & MAJID SHABAZZ HCC/Ybor City Concert Presented by Tampa Jazz Club & Suncoast Jazz Festival

85 CANDLES: CELEBRATING MISS KITTY DANIELS & MAJID SHABAZZ

HCC/Ybor City Concert Presented by Tampa Jazz Club & Suncoast Jazz Festival

The Bay Area jazz community and special guest artists, including bassist John Lamb, will get together for a birthday celebration honoring Kitty Daniels and Majid Shabazz, presented by the Tampa Jazz Club and the Suncoast Jazz Festival, in the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City, on Sunday, October 27 at 3:00. Kitty & Majid, who have performed together for four decades and inspired many musicians along the way, both turn 85 this month. The Sunday afternoon concert, part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series, will also include the premiere of “Kitty Daniels with Majid Shabazz: Living Jazz Legends,” a short documentary by filmmaker Louise Krikorian.

Ybor City-born Kitty Daniels (‘Miss Kitty’ to her fans) has played piano since she could reach the keyboard. She became known at an early age, featured with legendary Tampa bandleader Charlie Brantley, and the popular Skyliners. In the Jim Crow era, Kitty’s efforts led to the integration of the Tampa musicians’ union. She has continued to sing and play jazz and standards for her fans through the years – “songs that mean something,” Kitty says, “that tell a story.”

Majid Shabazz is a native of Florida’s panhandle who began playing drums after military service, while in New York with some of the leading musicians of the ‘50s. He toured with saxophonist Sil Austin in Japan, and with Pharoah Sanders in Europe, before returning to Florida, where he founded the Open Letter Culture Center. A portion of this concert will feature a reunion of his ‘Young Professors,’ from the 1970’s: pianist Michael Royal, saxophonist David Pate, and bassist Bill Swartbaugh.

John Lamb, the former Duke Ellington bassist whose 85th birthday concert was one of the musical highlights of the past year, will be a special guest at this concert, which is presented jointly by the Tampa Jazz Club and the Suncoast Jazz Festival (Nov. 22-24, at the Sand Key Sheraton & Marriott Suites). The word is just out that Kitty and Majid will be recipients of the inaugural Palladium Jazz Awards in a January concert in St. Petersburg. Please join their celebration on October 27, in the beautiful Mainstage Theatre in Ybor City!
