Gold Coast Jazz Announces 2019-2020 Jazz Concert Series in Fort Lauderdale

Gold Coast Jazz -
 A SEASON OF
STANDING OVATIONS
AT
Amaturo Theater/Broward Center for the Performing Arts

This year marks the 28th year of the Gold Coast Jazz Society’s presentation of the jazz concert series in Fort Lauderdale.  Gold Coast Jazz will present an incredible array of jazz that is innovative and creative, with straight-ahead jazz and variations of old favorites.  International artists as well as outstanding local musicians are included in the series.  All concerts will be presented at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale and begin at 7:45pm.

The jazz concert series includes seven concerts.  Full season subscriptions are available for $301 per person and Jazz Trio subscriptions (3 concerts of your choice) are available for $147 per person by calling the Gold Coast Jazz Society at 954-524-0805. If you become a member of Gold Coast Jazz, you’ll get a significant discount on a full subscription or jazz trio subscription.  Single tickets for each concert are now available at the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office at 954-462-0222 or online at www.browardcenter.org.  Student and teacher tickets are $15 with valid ID.  A discount for groups of ten or more is also available.

On November 13, the series begins with a “Tribute to Broadway and Hollywood” with the Bobby Rodriguez Jazz Orchestra with special guest Nestor Torres.  Bobby is a musician well known in the South Florida area. Nestor Torres’, mellifluous flute sounds have garnered him a Latin Grammy-Award and collaborations with multiple artists including Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Michael Camilo Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval.

On December 4 the Emmet Cohen Trio will make their debut at the Broward Center.  The Trio is making waves in the New York City jazz scene and across the globe and melds all styles of jazz with an emphasis on the Great American Songbook. Cohen is a rising star in the jazz world and is the 2019 winner of the American Pianists Association Cole Porter Award.  He has accompanied numerous jazz luminaries and plays with the command of a seasoned veteran. His fluid technique, innovative tonal palette, and expansive repertoire have earned him critical acclaim.

The Shelly Berg Trio will return on January 8 with special guest Veronica Swift.  One of the hottest young stars on the jazz scene today, the exciting and enchanting vocalist, Veronica Swift, joins forces with Shelly Berg for an evening of swinging jazz.   At the young age of 24, Veronica has already accumulated numerous acknowledgements of her talent, including 2nd place at the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition.  She currently tours and records with the Emmet Cohen Trio, Benny Green Trio and Chris Botti, and will be one of the featured vocalists on the heralded 2020 Jazz Cruise.  Shelly Berg is an award winning pianist, arranger, composer, producer, and educator and is Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.  He’s “a whirlwind of motion on the piano bench who never sounds a dull note,” Says Bill Kohlhasse, LA Times.

The February 12 concert will feature the return of the acclaimed jazz guitarist and vocalist, John Pizzarelli and his trio.  As a recording artist, radio jazz host and touring artist, Pizzarelli is “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing Jazz,” boasts the Boston Globe.  His concert will includes selections from his most recent CD, Centennial Reasons: 100 Year Salute to Nat King Cole.

On March 11, the Terell Stafford Quintet will be the featured artists presenting a concert in tribute to the music of Billy Strayhorn and Lee Morgan.  The NYC based trumpeter, Stafford has been hailed by McCoy Tyner as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player.”  Sidemen include Tim  Warfield/Tenor Sax, Bruce Barth/Piano, Nathan Pence/Bass and Billy Williams/Drums.

Our April 15 concert will feature the return of yet another Gold Coast Jazz favorite, jazz pianist and vocalist Tony DeSare.  This phenomenal jazz artist brings his fresh take on old school classics. He’s won critical acclaim for his three Billboard Top 10 jazz albums and for his exciting performances in jazz clubs, at Carnegie Hall, with symphony orchestras and in Las Vegas.  DeSare releases new recordings, videos of standards and new originals every few weeks on his YouTube channel, iTunes and Spotify.

The closing concert for the series on May 13 will feature the Nicki Parrott Trio.  The Trio includes Nicki Parrott on bass and vocals, the award-winning Italian jazz pianist Rossano Sportiello and drummer Ed Metz, Jr.  Ms. Parrott was Les Paul’s bassist and vocalist for over 10 years. In addition to performing at most of the world’s top jazz festivals, Nicki has performed with such jazz greats as Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Rebecca Paris, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, Michel Legrand, Marlena Shaw, Mike Stern, David Krakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, Scott Hamilton, Larry Carlton and Frank Vignola, to name a few.

Amelia Island Jazz Festival Presents New Orleans Legends October 6-13, 2019

2019 Amelia Island Jazz Festival
October 6 - 13, 2019
Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach FL

Get ready to celebrate the Spirit of New Orleans!

Two critically acclaimed New Orleans artists, highly regarded trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and sizzling trumpeter Jamil Sharif, will headline the 2019 Amelia Island Jazz Festival, October 6-13, in Fernandina Beach, FL.

A gifted musician and producer, Delfeayo Marsalis came to prominence alongside his famous siblings, Wynton (trumpet), Branford (sax) and Jason (drums) as a member of the Crescent City’s most illustrious jazz family. Marsalis is an adept improviser inspired by the swinging bop sounds of trombonist J.J. Johnson. He will appear on Saturday, October 12, 2019.

Jamil Sharif’s early passion for jazz was fueled by his training at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). This center is known for producing some of the world’s top musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr., and Terence Blanchard. Sharif studied with such notables as family patriarch Ellis Marsalis, reed master Alvin Batiste, and Edward “Kidd” Jordan. In addition, he has served as musical coordinator for several motion pictures including “Ray”, which depicted the life of Ray Charles. Sharif will perform on Friday, October 11. Both Sharif and Marsalis will appear at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club on Bill Melton Road and will be backed by the Les DeMerle Jazz Quartet featuring sensational vocalist Bonnie Eisele.

Now in its 16th year, the AIJF will showcase a full week of jazz at various locations in Fernandina Beach, FL beginning on Sunday, October 6 in Amelia Park with its annual free concert presenting the UNF Jazz Ensemble 2, directed by Dennis Marks. Additional shows will include a Sponsor’s Party hosted by DeMerle and Eisele plus special guests, Monday at The Lakeside at Amelia Island, 649 Amelia Parkway; Tuesday’s Jazz and Wine Tasting at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro featuring multi instrumentalist Dr. Bill Prince, pianist Doug Matthews and DeMerle on drums; the popular Jump Jive and Wail show and dance with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Little Big Band at the Sandbar & Kitchen Wednesday; the traditional Latin Night featuring the fiery sounds and sensual vocals of Trio Caliente on Thursday October 11 also at the Sandbar & Kitchen, and a Sunday, October 13, Dixieland Jazz Brunch, with the Spare Rib Six plus Bonnie Eisele for two seatings at The Lakeside at Amelia Island. Late night Jam Sessions will follow the headliner concerts both evenings in Dizzy’s Den at Sliders Beach Bar and Grill (upstairs), 1998 S. Fletcher Avenue.

It is highly advised to purchase your tickets online early.
With this amazing line-up the shows will  most likely out quickly.

Program is subject to change without notice.

The Third Annual Summer Jazz Series at Faena Miami Beach, in partnership with American Airlines, Yamaha and WDNA-FM,  is thrilled to present the return of the amazing keyboard prodigy Matthew Whitaker in a very special performance at the glamorous and intimate Faena Theater on Wednesday August 21st.  Matthew gave us a great show last year, and this year he’ll be bringing his own band and playing music from his brand new album, “Now Hear This”.

Just 18 years old and blind since birth, pianist/organist Matthew Whitaker has been wowing audiences everywhere since the age of 10 when he won first place on Fox’s ‘Showtime At The Apollo”.  This triumph lead to Matthew’s opening act performance at Steve Wonder’s Hall of Fame Induction at New York’s Apollo Theater.  Since then he’s achieved international acclaim, performing across the world in impressive venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Newport Jazz Festival, the Monterrey Jazz Festival and international appearances in France, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, the UK, Australia, Switzerland, Portugal, Japan, Spain and Morocco.  He has also charmed millions through his appearances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, TODAY’s documentary series, “Boys Changing The World”, and Harry Connick Junior’s daytime talk show.

At the age of five Matthew began attending the Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School in New York City, the only community music school for the blind and visually impaired in the United States.  He recently graduated from Emerson Junior/Senior High School iln Emerson, New Jersey and shall begin attending the Juilliard School of Music in September as the first blind undergraduate in their Jazz Studies Program.

Matthew will be performing selections from his newly released album, “Now Hear This” (Resilience Music Alliance), which features a stellar all-star cast featuring Grammy® Award-winning drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., Cuban bassist extraordinaire Yunior Terry, guitarist Dave Stryker and Miami’s very own Sammy Figueroa. The album was overseen by Grammy® Award-winning producer Brian Bacchus, who has worked closely with the likes of Gregory Porter, Norah Jones, Randy Weston and Sullivan Fortner, among others.

Faena’s annual Summer Jazz Series is produced and curated by three-time Grammy®  nominated record producer Rachel Faro and hosted by the legendary twice Grammy® nominated percussionist and 88.9 FM WDNA radio host Sammy Figueroa.  The series is presented in South Florida’s most beautiful venue, the Faena Theater.  This sumptuous space, which evokes the grand style of European opera houses juxtaposed with the glamor of 1950’s Miami, is marked by gold-leaf and red velvet d├ęcor and a gorgeous chandelier.  It’s a perfect setting for a glamorous and intimate evening of music by the best emerging jazz artists of our time.
