Marty Stokes was originally raised on Sanibel & Captiva Islands, a true NATIVE ISLANDER and Floridian, and has been playing different variations of blues music since he was a kid. His style is raw, melodic, and reaches to the core. Stokes and his band always brings strong applause and positive reaction to the true Blues audience. His love of the Blues began as a youngster overseas while growing up in a Military family, and so there were several assignments overseas, where American / English influence on the genre was raging with eager European listeners. It was in Wiesbaden Germany that Stokes was struck hard, listening to the early works of Clapton, Johnny Winter, BB King, Peter Green, Alvin Lee, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and many others. These days you can catch him locally and regionally in some of the top blues venues where the best Blues players are performing around Florida. His 4 piece blues ensemble includes accomplished Saxophonist Jennifer Mazziotti, who has played alongside Stokes for the past 10 years. Familiar to the Blues Scene, Jennifer has performed, recorded and toured with Blues Greats James and Lucky Peterson, to name a couple. Jennifer comes from a jazz background which adds a nice color to the bands progressive blues feel. The tight rhythm section made up of Bassist Daryl Best and Cuban Drummer Ernesto Guerra is guaranteed to please the Blues Connoisseur. SJO’s monthly concert series continues in great style, with legendary Miami musician, Mr. Joe Donato! The beloved South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame 2012 Inductee is widely recognized not only as a saxophonist, but as a respected band leader, entertainer, composer and lyricist.
Born in Vineland, New Jersey, Joe’s parents encouraged him to start studying the sax at the tender age of Five. By 8 he was already playing with adult musicians, and at 12 Joe joined the American Federation of Musicians Union. At the ripe age of 15, and with his parents’ blessing, Joe dropped out of school to tour with a variety of bands for more than ten years.
Donato was “discovered” by University of Miami’s then Dean, Bill Lee, in 1968 and was offered a scholarship to study music at U.M. Since arriving on New Year’s Day 1970, Joe has lived, studied, performed, and taught in South Florida. He is versatile in the entire woodwind family with a unique performance style and approach to improvisation reflecting a wide variety of musical influences. He has had an extraordinary life and career including international tours and performances with luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Carmen McRae and Nina Simone. Joe has also served as an adjunct faculty member or lecturer at U.M., Miami-Dade College and F.I.U.

Celebrating Our 33rd Season Nov 25, 2019! Thelma Valles (305)693-2594
Whether Hoey is playing scorching original pieces or new takes on classic rock covers, his solos are thrilling and reminiscent of Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. One thing that remains the same is Hoey’s command of the guitar. He attacks it with intensity and then plays something soft and achingly beautiful. This ability to mix feeling, phrasing, technique and tone is the true mark of the master guitarist.
When Gary Hoey was 14, he hung around the prestigious Berklee College of Music, near his hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts. He made friends with students and graduates and offered to pay them for lessons. It was the only way he could afford them. “I learned how to read and write music through the back door,” he said in a 2007 interview. “It gave me some background in jazz and some theory, which helped me with my rock. It gave me things to focus on and more to practice. That was kind of how I learned.”
Hoey dropped out of high school and began playing local clubs. In the late 1980s, he auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne. It was am experience that changed his life. “Ozzy came to Boston and was on the radio, talking about looking for a guitar player,” he said. “I sent a demo and I got a call about a week later, saying they really liked it and that they’d be flying me to California. I flew out there and got to play with Ozzy. (Black) Sabbath was one of my main influences, so it was a dream come true.”
Hoey was on the short list for the job, but although he didn’t get it, he took Osbourne’s advice and moved to the West Coast. He drove cross-country with a rental truck and within five years, had a major label record deal and a manager. He went on to record more than 20 albums and is considered among the top 100 guitarists. His 2013 album, Deja Blues, brought him back to his bluesy roots and his latest work, “Neon Highway Blues,” continues the journey. It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart.
Joe Satriani, himself a guitar hero, admires Hoey’s latest work. “It’s great to hear Gary sing and play the blues with his trademark intensity, feel and authenticity,” he said, “And the guitar tones are both vintage and modern at the same time.”
Open ears and an open mind are the essence of singer, guitarist and songwriter Robert Cray’s approach to writing, recording and playing music. He has created a sound that rises from American roots and arrives today both fresh and familiar. In just over 40 years Cray and his band have recorded 20 studio releases, 15 of which have been on the Billboard charts, and played bars, concert halls, festivals and arenas around the world. There are five Grammys with Cray’s name on them, and he has a suitcase full of W.C. Handy blues awards. Four years ago Cray was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
On August 28 the Mascot Label Group celebrated the vibrancy of the Cray Band’s rocking rootsy blues, soul-filled ballads and timeless R&B with the release of 4 Nights of 40 Years Live. Through clips of concerts from the 80s and four recent shows, the evolution from the Cray Band unfolds. Comments by Cray and band members add depth. And interviews with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy put the band in perspective. The 3- piece set will be available in a variety of formats – 2 LPs + Mp3, 2 CDs + DVD, Blu-Ray + 2 CDs and digitally.
The multimedia 4 Nights of 40 Years Live is a testament to the band’s longevity and vitality. The 80's concert footage is exuberant and shows the charisma of Young Bob (a reference in song that Cray makes to himself in homage to Muddy Waters calling himself Young Muddy) as a guitarist, vocalist and band leader. The live performances at recent concerts capture seasoned musicians bringing a vivid, illustrative past into the moment. Cray’s Stratocaster solos sing, cry and take on the funk. His voice has grown richer and wiser yet remains sweet.
it is extraordinary for musicians to thrive over four decades, and the Robert Cray Band is just that, an extraordinary story of success. On the DVD Texas blues and R&B artist Jimmie Vaughan sums up Robert Cray’s singularity and success simply when he says, “He’s got one foot in the future and one foot in the old stuff.”
