ART BLAKEY CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
OPENS USF
MONDAY NIGHT JAZZ SEASON
October
14, at USF Concert Hall
The opening
concert of the Monday Night Jazz Series at the USF Concert Hall will be
a Centennial Celebration of one of the jazz greats, Art Blakey,
featuring special guest drummer Jason Tiemann and the USF Faculty Jazz
Ensemble. Blakey led the incomparable Jazz Messengers, an incubator of
talented young musicians, for more than three decades, from the
mid-1950’s until his passing in 1990, and is renowned as a founder of
the ‘Hard Bop’ sound. The concert, on October 14, at 7:30 p.m., is
sponsored by the USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club.
The New
York-based drummer Jason Tiemann is in constant demand, having worked
with Benny Golson, Slide Hampton, and Eric Alexander among many others,
and is a highly regarded educator and clinician, teaching at the famed
Jamey Aebersold Workshops for the past two decades. He’ll be joined by
the great players from USF’s faculty: saxophonist Jack Wilkins,
trumpeter James Suggs, guitarist LaRue Nickelson, pianist Chris
Rottmayer, and bassist Mark Neuenschwander, in this celebration of Art
Blakey’s music and legacy.
Blakey, a
force of nature, once described jazz as “the eighth wonder of the
world.” And in turn one of his Messengers alumni, Wynton Marsalis, said
“On the eighth day, God created Art Blakey.” In fact, the USF School of
Music presented Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the USF Theater in the
late 1980’s, in his final years.
Monday Night
Jazz is one of the jewels in the crown of the Bay Area arts
scene. We hope to see you as the new season opens on October 14,
celebrating Hard Bop and Art Blakey at the USF Concert Hall!
