Opening the series, audiences are invited to experience an artful evening of exceptional acoustic jazz featuring acclaimed jazz artists Lisa Kelly and JB Scott with their Kelly/Scott Jazztet. Known for her smooth, intimate vocal tone, Lisa Kelly brings a sophisticated ‘Ella meets Diana Krall’ style, blending relaxed phrasing with lyrical, horn-like scat improvisation. Her expressive delivery is equally suited to small ensembles and big bands. JB Scott’s sassy, soulful trumpet playing—reminiscent of Freddy Hubbard, Louis Armstrong, and Clark Terry—reflects a wealth of experience performing in New Orleans, Miami, and on tour with groups such as the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Dukes of Dixieland.

Together, Kelly and Scott present a versatile repertoire that spans “Classic Swing to New Orleans,” including Great American Songbook standards, traditional selections, modern jazz, and award-winning originals. Their arrangements incorporate swing, sensitive ballads, Bossa Novas, light funk, Samba, bluesy shuffles, Bebop, New Orleans grooves, and more.

The Kelly/Scott Jazztet features a stellar rhythm section with pianist Jeff Phillips, bassist Jay Mueller, and drummer Clyde Connor. Based in Florida, these five musicians have earned regional to international acclaim, performing at venues such as Walt Disney World, jazz clubs, concert halls, jazz societies, and major festivals. Mission: To inspire and nurture creativity through interdisciplinary artist residencies, dynamic artist collaborations, community engagement, and self-discovery within the experience of nature.
Vision: ACA enriches lives through the joy and power of the arts.
Values: We believe in the values that our founder Doris Leeper embraced.
• The creative spirit must be nurtured.
• There is a powerful connection between the arts and the natural environment.
• Supporting artists creates innovation and capacity, both locally and globally.
Atlantic Center for the Arts continues to preserve and protect these values.

Founded in 2007 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to using the arts—particularly the performing arts—to share a simple but powerful message: the ability to create is a gift shared by all. Over the years, the organization has led creative development classes such as Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, sponsored the Spirit Café, staged approximately 20 theatrical productions, employed jazz musicians, published numerous books by talented writers, and even produced a short film. Project selection has consistently focused on offerings that bring hope to audiences and the wider world, with an emphasis on honesty and substance rather than sentimentality. The mission has remained clear: to provide a platform for creative individuals—actors, writers, directors, and musicians—to reach for greater artistic expression and realize their full potential. More broadly, Positively Florida seeks to inspire individuals to view their lives as works of art they are fully entitled to shape and define for themselves.

That mission continues today. In 2024, the organization produced an uplifting new musical, Riding Time with No Hands, supporting Florida-based composer/lyricist Mary Beth Koplin and playwright Ed Koplin in bringing their work from script to stage. In 2025, Positively Florida will debut another original work, a comedy titled The God Account, written by advertising professional Dave Warren. A refreshed edition of Spirit Café is in development, and Eckhart Tolle’s Practicing the Power of Now is being added to the course offerings. The current season is marked by both momentum and creativity.

Gary Broughman is the founder and president of Positively Florida, Inc. He is a writer, poet, editor, publisher, stage producer and director, actor, and educator. His greatest joy lies in creating space for other creatives to explore and express their gifts.

Gold Coast Jazz of Fort Lauderdale, FL Announces 2025 Annual Scholarship Award Recipients

Program has awarded almost half a million dollars in  scholarships since its inception in 2003!

Gold Coast Jazz is pleased to announce that this summer and for the upcoming school year, they will distribute $72,000 in scholarship awards.  Thirty students have been recommended to receive a scholarship from this year’s Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Competition, held on April 12, 2025.  Students who submitted applications were selected to perform in a live audition before a panel of judges. Scholarships are applicable for jazz camp tuition expenses for eligible high school students and for college tuition expenses for those students majoring in jazz.

Beginning in 2003 and due to the generosity of Jeanette Russell, the Gold Coast Jazz Society established a program to provide scholarship support to students wishing to further their musical studies in jazz. 2025 marks the 22nd year of this exceptional program, one of the larger jazz scholarship programs provided by a non-profit jazz organization.

“Without the funding help of Jeanette Russell, the O’Connor Family Foundation and Terri Pattullo, we would not be able to help so many students fulfill their dreams to study jazz.  We're very grateful for these resources for our scholarship program,” said Pam Dearden, Executive Director of the Gold Coast Jazz Society.  “It has been rewarding to know that we assisted so many talented students, many of whom have gone on to have successful careers as professional jazz musicians.”

Jazz camp scholarships are made possible with the financial assistance of the Elizabeth and Daniel O'Connor Family Foundation. College scholarships are made possible with a gift from Teri Pattullo in memory of jazz musician and educator, Brian Pattullo.

Scholarship students from the New World School of the Arts in Miami include: Zachary Balding, trumpet; Anthony Bell, tenor sax; Cristian Cabrera, trombone; Flavio Carrillo, trombone; Ryu Chan, guitar; Andy Fernandez, trombone; Wyatt Gaviria, baritone sax; Lincoln Gonzalez, piano; Juan Leyva, alto sax; Veronica Margues, drums; Alex Ramirez, tenor sax; and Benjamin Riggio, alto sax.  Students from Dillard Center for the Arts include Quincey Dubois, tenor sax; Gregory Hammond, trumpet; Dwayne James, drums; and Madison Krushall, baritone sax. Other students include Gregory Gittelsohn, trombone from Cypress Bay High School; Julian Pratt, bass from North Broward Preparatory, and Nathaniel Ratchford from Alexander Dreyfoos School of the Arts.  These students will attend summer jazz camps at the Brevard Music Camp, the Brubeck Jazz Summit, Florida A & M University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Litchfield Jazz Camp, Skidmore Jazz Institute, and University of Miami Frost Intensive.

Several students are eligible to receive an award for tuition assistance for the upcoming college year.  These students are either graduating high schools seniors or students currently enrolled in a college or university jazz program and include: Caiden Collins, tenor sax, Florida International University; Jolie Demesmin, voice, Osceola County School of the Arts; Erwin Dorsainville, tenor sax, University of West Virginia; Austin Helbling, piano, University of Central Florida; Andres Benitez Jaimes, sax, Palm Beach State College; Endia Sparks Hardy, piano/clarinet, Huston-Tillotson University; Dylan Montealegre, trombone, Dillard Center for the Arts; Jacob Perry, guitar, Florida International University; Enzo Pulley, drums, New World Schools of the Arts; James Ratchford, tenor sax, John Hopkins/Peabody Conservatory; Eva Rodriguez, bass, New World School of the Arts.

Jeanette Russell, whose estate established the program, was affectionately known as “Lady Jazz,” She achieved success in New York City as a fashion designer, was an avid jazz fan and frequently assisted jazz musicians in need.   Betty O’Conner’s father, Robert Friedman, was nationally known as a composer of "big band" jazz music, achieved the pinnacle of success in business and industry as the President and Chief Executive Officer of The National Machinery Company in Tiffin, Ohio.   Brian Pattullo was a jazz guitarist and music educator who lived in Fort Lauderdale.  The love of jazz by all of these people lives on through this scholarship program.

The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to perpetuate and advance jazz through performances, education and outreach activities.  For more information or to donate to the scholarship program, call 954-524-0805 or go to www.goldcoastjazz.org.

Rusty Wright Band Closes Their Southeast Florida Touring with Show June 7, 2025 at Delray Beach's Arts Garage

ARTS GARAGE -
Your Last Chance to Get It "WRIGHT!"

Friday, June 7, 2025 | 8–10p
The Rusty Wright Band
Personnel:
Rusty Wright – Guitar, Vocals
Laurie Wright – Vocals, Guitar
Billy Agner – Bass
Vail Hayes – Drums
Dave Brache - Keyboards
at
Arts Garage
94 NE 2nd Ave., Delray Beach, FL 33444
MAP   WEBSITE  (561)450-6357

After 21 years of performing across the globe, the Rusty Wright Band is entering an indefinite hiatus from live performances. The decision follows the upcoming retirement of drummer Vail Hayes, who will step away from performing at the end of July. Band leader Rusty Wright has chosen not to seek a replacement, opting instead to bring the band’s long-running chapter to a close with intention and appreciation.

“It’s been a great experience working with Billy Agner and Vail Hayes—and keyboardist Dave Brahce, when his schedule allowed—over the past few years," Wright said. "We couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to make music and travel with. But since the pandemic, touring has become more difficult and significantly more expensive. It just doesn’t make sense to be on the road for weeks or months only to break even—or worse, take a loss. Sometimes, you just know when it’s time to let something go. The world is changing, and so are we. The idea of bringing a new personality into the band felt exhausting. We decided to end things on our own terms.”

Rusty Wright remains fully engaged in creative pursuits. He is currently narrating audiobooks, doing voiceover work, and recording guitar tracks for clients worldwide. He has begun writing a novel and is also channeling his visual artistry into designing products including coloring books, wall art, and even shower curtains. Rusty and his wife, Laurie Wright, will continue performing together as a duo. He may also collaborate with bassist Billy Agner on a future side project. Laurie has expressed interest in returning to writing—perhaps with a blog in the near future.

As for Vail Hayes, he has always been the reserved one, keeping plans close to the chest. His presence will be missed—especially the banter between him and Billy during long van rides.

In 1954 Cal Tjader was a successful West Coast musician, known for his work with Dave Brubeck, Vince Guaraldi and Paul Desmond. And then one trip to New York City changed everything. Tjader went to see the Machito Big Band and experienced an epiphany which transformed his own musical life and created the sound of Latin jazz as we know it today.

Picking up on the mambo craze of the time, Tjader combined the shimmering, celestial notes of the vibraphone with the swinging rhythms of Latin percussion as played by Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo. Throughout the ‘60’s Tjader released a string of hits such as Soul Sauce (Guachi Gara), The Continental and Mambo Mindoro.

July 16, 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Cal Tjader’s birthday and in his honor legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa brings the cool tropical sounds of Cal Tjader to one of his favorite clubs, Judson’s Live at the Phillips Center in Orlando along with his band of talented virtuosos.

A prolific session player and worldclass percussionist, Sammy has collaborated with an extensive list of renowned artists, including David BowieChaka KhanDiana RossMiles DavisQuincy Jones and Mariah Carey. Known for playing in multiple musical styles, Sammy plays a variety of percussion instruments and is especially well-known for his unique conversational style on the congas.

In addition to his recent Latin Grammy Nomination and his two Grammy Nominations for Best Latin Jazz, Sammy has been honored with numerous awards, including two NARAS Awards for Percussionist of the Year, two Drummie Awards for Best Hand Percussion and the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Best Percussionist.

Taking the part of Cal Tjader’s vibraphone is Felipe Fournier, a dynamic showman, musical director for Ruben Blades and Jeremy Bosch and producer of the Latin Grammy-winning female mariachi group Flor de Toloache. On piano the amazing Tal Cohen adds excitement to the mix while Sammy pays respects to the brilliance of Mongo Santamaria and the spectacular Cuban drummer/timbalero Reinier Guerra takes the Willie Bobo chair. Agustín Conti is an accomplished bassist known for his versatility and precision across jazz, Latin, and contemporary styles, performing with top-tier ensembles and artists internationally.

We highly encourage Florida music lovers to join Sammy in paying homage to this great musical figure and celebrate the summer with his music -- cool but always swinging. Cal Tjader’s music is a party-starter, and the audience is warmly invited to get up and dance!
