Lynne Arriale returns to PB County this Saturday for Arts Garage’s Jazz Project

It has been a couple years
since Lynne graced a South Florida
stage. Welcome her back this
weekend at her  solo performance...

Featured Artist of the Month at

July 28, 2012: Jazz Project
7:30pm Spontaneous Combustion!  The Art of Jazz Improvisation
Critically acclaimed jazz pianist, recording artist, composer and educator,
Lynne Arriale’s demonstration will introduce jazz as a “language.”
8pm Lynne Arriale in Concert
Tickets provide admission to both events.

With her tangle of red curls and striking blue eyes, pianist Lynne Arriale is a dynamic and soulful performer. In recent years, Arriale, who teaches at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, has toured and recorded with brilliant musicians — including trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Bill McHenry and bassist George Mraz — as well as with her own trio. But the focus generally remains on Arriale's bright playing and introspective compositions, even more so on her latest recording, which is aptly titled Solo. And that's exactly how you'll hear her when she performs at Arts Garage this summer.

“Bring your wine. Bring your dinner. Bring your whatever. But make sure you include your ears, heart and soul in the picnic basket.  This concert will touch all three more, and deeper, than any of the summer season at Arts Garage if you are listening and HEARING. Prepare your mind for structured beauty, and being moved from your everyday existence into the world of music, and then safely returned.”
- Charlie Boyer, Jazz & Blues Florida

Duffy Jackson All Star Quintet
Longtime South Florida jazz fans certainly will be out in force to greet drummer Duffy Jackson, holding court behind his drum kit while swinging ferociously and cracking wise. Not only is Duffy among the swingingest drummers around, he's also one of the funniest. But he comes by his entertainment roots naturally: His dad was legendary jazz bassist Chubby Jackson. And certainly, Duffy has backed his share of legends, among them Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Carter. Now living in Nashville, the drummer returns to South Florida for his Arts Garage gig, where he'll provide the propulsive engine to a roaring All Star gathering of David Gibble - Trumpet, John Michalak- Sax, Dolph Castellano - Piano and Rick Doll - Bass.

August 18, 2012: Garage Blues, 8pm
Barrelhouse Chuck
with
Famous Frank & The Nucklebusters Blues Band
Chicago is known for its rich legacy of blues pianists, and Barrelhouse Chuck Goering learned from some of the best. Relocating from Gainesville to Chicago in 1979, he befriended blues-piano great Sunnyland Slim, with whom he studied and traveled for 16 years. This also gained him entry to a fraternity of Chicago blues-piano heroes, including Blind John Davis, Big Moose Walker, Detroit Junior and Little Brother Montgomery. Chuck became a formidable player himself, and has performed and recorded with Jimmy Rogers, Hubert Sumlin, Buddy Guy and Kim Wilson, among others. You can also hear him on the soundtrack to the movie Cadillac Records. For his Arts Garage show, Barrelhouse Chuck will be joined by South Florida faves Famous Frank and the Nucklebusters.

August 25, 2012: Jazz Project, 8pm
Jonathan Kreisberg Quartet
Anyone who heard guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg — who grew up in Miami and attended the University of Miami — knew he was destined to make his mark in the jazz world. A superbly gifted player, Kreisberg has released seven CDs as a leader and performed with his electrifying quartet on 4 continents.  Jonathan is steadily building a reputation as the new voice in jazz guitar.  He also tours as a member of the bands of Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joe Locke, Ari Hoenig and Stefano Di Battista.

About Arts Garage
Arts Garage is the venue of choice for a diverse array of local, national and international performers, as well as the preferred destination for those in search of arts seekers and aficionados. Established in April 2011, its mission is to collaborate with emerging artists and cultural innovators to facilitate an exchange of art and ideas and present cutting-edge, interdisciplinary performances and exhibitions.

Located in the heart of Delray Beach, at
180 NE First Street
in Pineapple Grove on the ground level of a parking garage, Arts Garage seeks to transform Delray Beach into a boutique metropolitan city through arts and culture. The venue’s casually intimate ambiance reflects the feel of its City, and the Garage’s BYOW policy is avidly applauded.

2011 Grammy-Award Nominee
Roseanna Vitro
"[Roseanna Vitro] has the unrelenting scatability of Ella Fitzgerald, the pristine elegance of Sarah Vaughan, the blues-bucket gutsiness of Aretha Franklin, and her distinct, clear voice."  - Downbeat

"A first rate improviser ... determined to use her voice with the same musical breadth and density with which instrumentalists use their horns."  - The Los Angeles Times

Thursday, August 2, 8pm - Concert
Friday, Aug. 3, 10am to noon – Master Class

ROSEANNA VITRO is a reigning member of the jazz community. She has toured the world as an esteemed performer, clinician, recording artist, vocal instructor and ambassador. Her collaborations, covering a wide range of music and stylistic directions, have been cited and celebrated far and wide.

Roseanna is a soulful communicator, showcasing a thirst for swinging hard and possessing an ear for melodic invention. Her strengths include rhythmic acuity and free-spirited spontaneity, often heard in her improvisations, using both scat syllables and lyrics.

Ms. Vitro's signature energy and grace can be heard on a host of recordings. Notable among them is her breakout recording on Telarc (Passion Dance), which featured Elvin Jones, Christian McBride and longtime musical partner, Kenny Werner, and compelling tributes to Ray Charles (Catchin' Some Rays), Bill Evans (Conviction), and Brazil (Tropical Postcards). The Delirium Blues Project: Serve or Suffer, on Half Note Records (2008), is a live, blues-based recording of jazz and pop repertoire featuring Kenny Werner's arrangements.

Having served as an official Jazz Ambassador, sponsored in 2009 by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. State Department, in 2004 by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the U.S. State Department, Roseanna has presented concerts and workshops around the world. Roseanna Vitro displays a heart and a soul rare by any standards. She is a consummate artist whose professional outreach improves us all.  Joined by Mark Soskin (piano), Sara Caswell (violin), Dean Johnson (bass) and Tim Horner (drums), Ms. Vitro brings a Community Arts Program 2012 Summer Concert Series evening full of artful jazz singing, brimming with heart and soul!

Al Goes to the Beach - Cool sounds and company to be found...

Submitted by Al Kanovsky, 7/21/12

It's Friday night, it's hot and I'm feeling fat and lazy. I opt for a club nearby. O'Malleys Ocean Pub. On the beach, just over the Hollywoud Blvd. bridge. It turns out to be a great choice. Cool ocean breeze, cool prices for adult beverages and a cool blues band, The SoulFonics. They play the Blues Chicago style and their funky soul sound is strictly Memphis. Billy Seward(guitar/vocals) fronts the band and is backed by Phil(keyboard) Ron(drums) Manny(bass) Jason(trumpet) and last but not least, playing a soulful tenor sax---"One Night Stan'". A special guest was blues vocalist Betty Padgett. Can that girl sing or what? She had everyone tappin', clappin' and getting up to dance.
I don't know why it happens to me----listen-----a young couple with a little boy ask if they can share my table. "Of course" I say. With that Betty is into her next number. The young woman gets up to dance by herself. Her companion is holding the child. She looks over toward me. I am boppin' my head in time to the music. She puts on a beautiful country girl smile and extends her arms towards me, in an invitation to dance. I protest. She insists. I protest-----you know who wins. Her name is Amanda, a country gal from Canada. His name is Rick. The boys name is Ryder. Amanda and Rick are young enough to be my grandkids. I hope my grandchildren know as much about how to enjoy life. Had a great time listening to a really tight band and a dynamic singer. Hot tip: Hot summer night, choose a beachside venue.

All Saints Hopyard: Tallahassee, FL 9-11pm, July 24: Rita Chiarelli's Music from the Big House post-screening party.

In the movie, Rita Chiarelli, Canada’s Queen of the Blues, takes a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the blues, Louisiana State Maximum Security Penitentiary a.k.a Angola Prison - what used to be the bloodiest prison in America. Rita’s trip turns into a historic jailhouse performance - playing with inmates serving life sentences. Their shared bond of music, and Chiarelli’s vivacious personality, draw striking revelations from the inmates. Rather than sensational stories of convicts, we witness remarkable voices of hope as their love of music radiates humanity and redemption on their quest for forgiveness.
