Fort Lauderdale Visitor Information

The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, educational programs, a jazz scholarship program and musical services provided by the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band.

Gold Coast Jazz Society History
Frederick G. Ruffner, Jr. had a vision to bring more jazz to the “Gold Coast” area of South Florida.  In 1992, Fred and a group of avid jazz buffs made this vision a reality by forming a non-profit organization called the Gold Coast Jazz Society in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Following its formation, the GCJS developed a concert series, which was presented in the main dining room of the historic Riverside Hotel, located on the famous Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.  As the concert series continued to grow and expand, a larger venue was required.  The concert series was eventually moved to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located in the Arts & Science District of Fort Lauderdale.  Today, the seven-concert jazz series continues to be presented in the Amaturo Theater each year from November through May.  Over the years the Society has grown and expanded to include the presentation of jazz education and community outreach activities, the Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Program, and many special events throughout the year.

Publisher’s PRO TIP:

New Glarus and Tofflers are the home-stomping grounds for the Florida-touring and ever-popular THE JIMMYS! Fly into Rockford, IL (RFD) during daylight hours and rent a car for the scenic one-hour countryside drive to New Glarus. Arrive early for an EXTRA EXTRA day of Wisconsin-ized music and catch The Jimmys at their regular Thursday night spot at Tofflers on the 17th. By the time the Friday music comes around you'll already be a 'local' on the scene.

A stop in Monroe just over the Illinois line to visit Minhas Craft Brewery—brewing since 1845—is a great introduction to Wisconsin beer. And then follow that up with a stop at the New Glarus Brewery and get your own, Wisco-Only, SPOTTED COW, along with some mandatory Wisco cheese.

After checking in your hotel and icing down the brew for later, take a walk around the real-life Swiss-styled downtown (no, this is NOT a Disney production!), and take notes on where to return for more food, drinks, and shopping during the rest of your stay.

Plan time for a short drive north into and around the heart of the Driftless Area—you won’t believe you’re still in Wisconsin! You'll find Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin in Spring Green and The House on the Rock an easy drive and easy on the eyes, too — can’t beat that. And the mighty Mississippi River, with its scenic bluffs and winding cuts, is just an hour and fifteen minutes to the west.

Overall, you’d be cheating yourself if you didn’t book some extra days around the music to explore this truly culturally and geographical unique part of the Midwest! And this fest and New Glarus is just the right place to make your base. If you want more personalized info and suggestions, hit me up - I've spent a lot of time in that part of the world and it holds a place in my heart.

Proscht!  Charlie

P.S. And remember, there are not any tariffs on bringing back Wisconsin cheese!

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From Jazz Blues Florida – Continuing the Music News from a New Location

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
4/17/25

Dear Friends, Clients, and Colleagues,

Keeping Jazz & Blues Florida going in the U.S. was no longer a viable option. If I had stayed, I would have been forced to shut it down and seek an entirely new line of work—no easy task at this stage in life, regardless of past successes. Instead, I chose to relocate to Central America to reduce my cost of living along with business overhead and continue doing what remains important to me and, I hope, to Florida’s live music community.

This change in location does not negatively affect delivery of services, there is a positive impact there as well through increased productivity. Jazz & Blues Florida remains fully active and focused on promoting Florida’s jazz and blues scene through targeted email campaigns, blog features, website listings with banners, and social media distribution. The business continues under the same ownership, with the same commitment to supporting artists, venues, and festivals across the state—and beyond.

This transition ensures the sustainability of Jazz & Blues Florida, allowing me to maintain high-quality services while adapting to economic realities. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. Come visit if you are in the area.

Best regards,
Charles R. Boyer, a.k.a. Charlie

The Nancy And David Bilheimer Capitol Theatre

Presents

Damien Escobar's

GIMINI Tour

Friday, April 25, 2025

The Bilheimer Capitol Theatre
405 Cleveland Street,
Clearwater, FL 33755
VIP EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE

World renowned violinist, Damien Escobar returns to the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre! On top of being a world renowned violinist, Damian is also an author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, hailing from Jamaica, Queens, New York. His musical career spans over a decade, and his inspiring journey of making it big, losing it all, fighting to rebuild, and getting a second chance at success is as much apart of his brand identity than being among the top violinist in the world.

Escobar, a two-time Emmy Award-winning violinist has carved a distinctive path in the music world by blending classical violin with genres like jazz, R&B, pop, and hip-hop. A Juilliard graduate at just 13, he first gained prominence with his brother in the duo Nuttin’ But Stringz, achieving third place on "America’s Got Talent" in 2008 and performing at President Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009. Following the group's dissolution, Escobar faced personal challenges, including homelessness, but made a notable return to music as a solo artist. His solo career features Billboard-charting albums such as "Sensual Melodies" and "Boundless," the latter earning a 2018 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Jazz Album. Beyond music, Escobar is an entrepreneur and philanthropist, founding the Violins Against Violence foundation and launching initiatives like The Gloria Gail Gallery to support arts access for underserved communities. His multifaceted career reflects a commitment to artistic innovation and social impact.

The Nancy and David Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, located in downtown Clearwater’s Cleveland Street District, was constructed in 1921 and is one of Florida’s oldest operating theaters. In 2023, industry trade publication Pollstar named the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre the #1 club venue in Tampa, #1 in Florida, #1 in the United States and #1 in the world, of club venues with 800 seats or less. In 2013, the theater underwent a complete $10 million renovation and is the catalyst for downtown development. In 2019, Nancy and David Bilheimer donated $2.5 million to Ruth Eckerd hall as part of the theatre’s ongoing “Expanding the Experience” Capital campaign.  In recognition of the generous donation, the Capitol Theatre’s name was changed to the Nancy and David Bilheimer Capitol Theatre.
