South Florida JAZZ to Present Omar Sosa Afreecanos Quartet
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
April 10, 2010 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes three-time Grammy nominated Cuban-born piano virtuoso, OMAR SOSA and his AFREECANOS QUARTET in the first South Florida performance of this group of extraordinary musicians. Mr. Sosa fuses true African music with that of the Diaspora with emphasis on creative influences of contemporary music. The result is quite remarkable and absolutely unique.
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is privileged to feature Omar Sosa with his current band of protégés, appearing for the first time in Florida. This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students of any age with I.D.) and may be purchased from the Broward Center Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: www.southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Web site.
OMAR SOSA AFREECANOS QUARTETElectric and eclectic accurately describe the music of Omar Sosa, the three-time Grammy-nominated Cuban composer and pianist, as he continues to explore the African roots of music throughout the Diaspora, while employing modern jazz harmonies and traditional and modern-day instrumentation. Historically, his ensembles and recordings tend to fuse the folkloric with the contemporary, the ancestral with the urban - all with a purely Latin jazz heart and mentality.
Born in Camagüey, Cuba in 1965, Omar grew up listening to his father’s records that included European classical music, some Nat King Cole, but considerable indigenous Cuban music. The group Los Amigos, playing descargas, was his introduction to Latin jazz and Omar was touched profoundly by the music’s freedom and eloquence. By age eight, he was studying percussion, particularly marimba, and displayed sufficient talent to warrant conservatory training, first in Camagüey and then at Escuela Nacional de Musica in Havana, where he studied piano developing virtuosic ability. At that time, jazz could only be heard on selected radio programs and it was in that fashion that Omar and his contemporaries learned the jazz history and vocabulary. Shortly after completing his education, he immigrated to Quito, Ecuador and even lived in Spain for a short period before coming to the U.S. in 1995 to live in Oakland, California and starting his 14-year relationship with OTA Records for whom he has recorded prodigiously. Currently, he lives in Barcelona, Spain.
Mr. Sosa has taken Afro-Cuban musical forms, like the rumba, and arranged them for African musicians and African instruments, releasing these forms from the traditional Afro-Cuban clave, and opening them to innovative interpretations. With his band Afreecanos Sosa combines folkloric elements infused with a modern jazz idiom, including spiritual vocals and percussion from Africa, Cuba, and Brazil. He also has infused the music with modern electronica creating truly unique music.
The Afreecanos Quartet is appropriately diverse. Drummer Marque Gilmore is a founding member of New York City’s Black Rock Coalition, and pioneer of the New York and London live drum-&-bass scenes. He has worked with an international array of artists, including Joe Zawinul, Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and innovative musician-historian Cheick Tidiane Seck. Marque is acclaimed for his multimedia performance project, DRUM-FM, and his recent remixes of tracks from Omar Sosa’s CD Mulatos are featured on the new Mulatos Remix CD. In addition to the electric bass, Childo Tomas sings in his native Mozambican language of Ronga, and plays m’bira Mola Sylla sings in his native Senegalese language of Wolof, and plays m’bira, xalam, and kongoman.
Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

Gambling Laws Block Online Payments to South Florida Blues Society

Online Gambling Ban Hits More Than Casinos as Blues Site Blocked
Published on March 26, 2010 by Joshua McCarthy of onlinecasinoadvisory.com

"Attempts to block payments to online gambling sites are affecting more than Internet casinos, as a Florida blues music fan club finds transactions unavailable.
The South Florida Blues Society informed members in an e-mail today that Internet transactions for the group had been inadvertently blocked as Paypal listed the site as online gambling. The attempts by payment processors to meet the looming stipulations of the UIGEA has caused chaos for legitimate sites more so than the targeted online casinos.
SFBS says it has raised money legally for the organization for almost ten years by selling raffle tickets on its website, with winners getting a trip on the Blues Cruise through the Caribbean. But now, all sales from the site, including music, shirts, and other merchandise, are denied by Paypal, which has identified the music fan club as a gambling organization.
Even memberships to the society are blocked from payment, as the prediction by financial experts of the overblocking likely to occur when financial institutions are made responsible for UIGEA enforcement is realized. And SFBS President Blues Bobby writes that only checks mailed to the club will presently be processed, as Visa and Mastercard also look to screen sites for Internet gambling connections."

South Florida Jazz Divas & Gold Coast Jazz Society Band
Fort Lauderdale, FL – South Florida is home to many outstanding musicians as well as a wealth of jazz musicians. On Wednesday, April 14, the Gold Coast Jazz Society will feature four of the area’s most popular jazz singers, Brenda Alford, Rose Max, Wendy Pedersen and Nicole Yarling, in concert with the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band, led by Eric Allison, Music Director. The performance will occur at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The jazz show begins at 7:45 pm. Single tickets are $35 and $40 and student tickets are $12 with student ID. Purchase tickets through the Broward Center Box Office at 954-462-0222 or online at http://www.goldcoastjazz.org/ or http://www.browardcenter.org/. A pre-concert Jazz Riff jazz talk will be given by radio personality Stu Grant at 7:00pm in the theater before the show.
Brenda Alford, vocalist and composer, began her musical career in 1978 in Baltimore, Maryland, just days after meeting the great jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald. Since that time, she has performed jazz, pop, and gospel in concerts in North America, the Caribbean, and Asia. Brenda has worked with some of the greatest names in jazz including Pete Minger, Stanley Turrentine, Sonny Stitt, Philly Jo Jones, Sam Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Keter Betts, Lou Donaldson, Ron Carter, Al Foster, and Cyrus Chestnut. Brenda has also recorded with jazz piano legend Horace Silver on the Blue Note label and performed with saxophone innovator Flip Phillips, formerly of the Woody Herman band. Brenda can be also heard on “Hamp”- a tribute to Lionel Hampton with Billy Marcus.
Rose Max started singing professionally with the Octeto Rio Orchestra, performing in the wealthy nightclub scene of Rio. From a musical family, her great-grandfather is the conductor/composer Cupertino De Menezes and grandfather the guitarist/composer Manuel De Menezes. Rose has worked as a session singer, recording jingles and background vocals, backing up some of Brazil' s most renowned singers. Since moving to Miami in 1993, Rose has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Hispanic and American communities and has won the Brazilian Press Award for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” in 1997, 1998 and 2001.
Wendy Pedersen, graduate of the University of Miami’s Studio Music and Jazz Vocal program, is a south Florida favorite and a highly sought after studio singer. She can be heard on hundreds of recordings including those of Christina Aguilera, Alejandro Sanz, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Chayanne, James Brown, and Raul Diblasio. Wendy also sings with the jazz vocal quartet, Mad Romance, featuring Rick Harris, Lisanne Lyons and Greg Diaz.
Nicole Yarling was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, but has been a fixture in the South Florida jazz scene for many years. A protégée of the late great Joe Williams, Nicole has worked with stellar musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Ira Sullivan and as a featured soloist with Jimmy Buffett. She participated on Buffet's platinum-selling CD "Fruitcakes" (MCA), and went on to conduct 8 worldwide tours with her own project, Little Nicky and the Slicks.
Good seats are still available for the April 14 performance. The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Bonita Blues Fest - Bonita Springs Florida - Blues Music w/ Blue Skies
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
Bonita Blues Fest 2010 happened this past weekend. This is what happened Saturday. We couldn't make it over the Friday night show, but those that did were rewarded for their efforts. The storm had passed through, the organizers, vendors, and sound people were up to the challenge and had everything ready to go for those that made it. Saturday, well, that was just plain WONDERFUL! (Sunny, breezy, 74 degrees!)
You can see photos taken throughout the day on our MySpace profile page:
The line-up for the day was: The John Allender Band, Greg Nagy Band, Delta Highway, Motor City Josh & the Big Three and Festival Headliner, Albert Castiglia. Check the listings ( www.JazzBluesFlorida.com/listings ) if you missed the fest to find out where these great bands are playing before they split the state.
For instance, Delta Highway will be at Boston's on the Beach in Delray for their weekly BLUE TUESDAY show. We will be there!
Congratz again to the Bonita Springs community for presenting an EXCELLENT festival, by all measures. Contact them soon if you want to discuss becoming a sponsor of this fine event next year...

After seven critically-acclaimed traditional blues releases (along with two Blues Blast Music Award wins and 14 Blues Music Award nominations under his band’s collective belt), Nick Moss is taking a fresh approach and heading in an exciting new direction on Privileged. As Blogcritic Josh Hathaway writes in the liner notes, “Privileged represents a change in direction but not inspiration. Before Nick met Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Dawkins and Lurrie Bell, he met their musical offspring in the form of Led Zeppelin, Free, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Cream and other legends who drew their inspiration from Mississippi’s Delta and the immortal treasures that sprang from his beloved nearby Chicago.”

Moss has written some of the finest songs of his career, and by stretching beyond the traditional blues idiom, he has expanded his sound without losing his identity. That growth can be heard in the album’s first track, “Born Leader” as well as new originals “Privileged At Birth” and “Tear ’Em Down.” Those songs, combined with Moss’ stunning covers of Cream’s classic “Politician” and Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth,” continue the path Moss began with his award-winning song “Mistakes From The Past” (from 2007’s Play It 'Til Tomorrow) to form a narrative that looks forward and back to assess current events. Perhaps Moss’ greatest achievement on Privileged is creating a musical universe diverse enough to incorporate those topical songs with his more traditional side, represented by his cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Louise,” and his original tune, “Georgia Redsnake.” And what Moss album would be complete without the instrumental that puts Moss’ skills as one of the top guitarists of his generation center stage? The eight-minute album closer, “Bolognious Funk,” combines his incendiary lead with one of the hardest grooves he’s ever recorded.
“Nick's new CD just rocks! He balances traditional roots blues with a fresh new approach and an ‘out of the trad’ box’ sound.I applaud him. Play what's in your heart, the crowd will follow.”
– Jimmy Thackery

Through a generous bequest from the estate of Jeanette M. Russell, the Gold Coast Jazz Society has awarded over $200,000 in scholarship awards in recent years to students from middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities pursing studies in jazz. Mona Hinton, wife of famed bassist Milt Hinton, dubbed her “Lady Jazz.”
The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to advancing the cultural art form of jazz through performances, education and outreach activities.
