Pinecrest Gardens Presents JazzAid Series October - April w/ World Renowned Artists and to a Worldwide Audience

JazzAid Live at the Banyan Bowl is an eight concert jazz series streamed live from the Pinecrest Gardens' Banyan Bowl Amphitheater. In an effort to both save the famed series this year and help feed families across the nation, the Village of Pinecrest will make this iconic jazz series available to anyone with internet access. 

A generous portion of the proceeds from JazzAid Live will go directly to World Central Kitchen founded by acclaimed international Chef José Andrés to help to feed families affected by the pandemic.

Tickets are $15 per show, or you can purchase the full subscription series for a reduced package rate of $100 for all eight shows. Concerts will air only once at 8:00 p.m. ET the day of the concert on any internet based device including some smart TVs, computer monitors, tablets and smartphones.

Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble in Ft. Lauderdale prepare for Lincoln Center Competition

SOUTH FLORIDA JAZZ STUDENTS HEAD TO THE BIG APPLE

April 4, 2011 -- In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month what better connection than our own South Florida up-and-coming jazz artists to celebrate the joy of music?

Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble, part of the Performing Arts magnet at Dillard High, just returned with a First Place win from the annual Swing Central High School Jazz Band Competition in Savannah, GA. (March 30-Apr. 1, 2011). Swing Central, part of the Savannah Music Festival, provides more than 240 students from 12 high schools across the United States with opportunities to receive instruction from, directly interact with and publicly perform with some of the nation's finest jazz educators and professionals including Marcus Roberts, Wycliffe Gordon, Ted Nash, Marcus Printup, John & Jeff Clayton.  

DCA Jazz is now preparing for their next competition at the famed New York City’s Frederick Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

But the young performers -- whose talents will soon be featured in a public television documentary -- now face perhaps their biggest challenge: raising the $30,000 needed to make the New York trip a possibility for the 25 students in the jazz ensemble.  

The Essentially Ellington competition is part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program headed by musical director Wynton Marsalis. Last year, DCA Jazz qualified for the first time and placed 2nd nationally.

Students have launched an online fundraiser and will have two upcoming benefit concerts:

April 18th - Cinema Paradiso - Reception - 6 pm, Concert - 7 pm - 503 SE 6th St., Ft.  Lauderdale , FL 33301

and on
May 7th at 4:00 pm - "Sweet Dillard Jazz" - Dillard High School, 2501 NW 11th St., Fort Lauderdale.

This is a call to South Florida to help these children reach their fullest potential. Support these young artists. Be proud and part of their accomplishments. Let’s groove together to the wonderful sound of jazz.

Florida Folklife Collection, State Archives of Florida, Announces the Release of Florida Blues Recordings

TALLAHASSEE – Secretary of State Kurt S. Browning and the Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services today announced the release of Where the Palm Trees Shake at Night, a selection of Blues music from the Florida Folklife Collection in the State Archives of Florida. The release is the latest in a series of compilations produced by the Division of Library and Information Services’ Florida Memory Project.

“The Florida Department of State is proud to support the legacy of Florida musicians and their influence on a genre as prolific in American history as the blues,” said Secretary Browning. “With the help of fans, folklorists and archivists, Florida Blues music will continue to be treasured and enjoyed.”

The music presented on Where the Palm Trees Shake at Night was selected from hundreds of hours of Florida Folk Festival performances and field recordings spanning 25 years, from 1977 to 2002. In addition to the down-home folk traditions of Emmett Murray, Richard Williams and Moses Williams, the recordings feature performances of standard Blues by Albert “Buck” Thompson, Charles Atkins and Martin “Tampa Blue” Locklear. The Piedmont finger-picking style of North Carolina guitarist Etta Baker was also captured at the Florida Folk Festival and is included in the release, as is the renowned Washington, D.C. duo Cephas and Wiggins’ more modernized interpretation of Piedmont Blues.

Other performances from the Florida Folk Festival on the release include renditions of classic Blues forms on piano with powerful and colorful vocal performances by Ida Goodson, Mary McClain, Marie Buggs and Alex McBride. Additionally, Florida Folk Heritage Award winner William “Washboard Bill” Cooke’s unique combination of Blues, street performance and folk art illustrates the musician’s love for his home state. Songs by Roy Book Binder, Johnny Brown, Sammy Lee Williams and Johnny Shines also exhibit masterful talents with traditional Blues forms through their performances of original material.

The Blues has enjoyed a rich and varied tradition in Florida. Folklorists such as Zora Neale Hurston, Alan Lomax and Stetson Kennedy documented Florida Blues from the late 1920s until the early 1940s. Blues musicians also received widespread attention during the 1960s Blues and Folk music revivals. In 1978, the North Florida Folklife Project began to reexamine and document performances by Blues musicians throughout the state.

Jazz students to compete for scholarships in Ft. Lauderdale April 9, 2011

On April 9, 2011 the Gold Coast Jazz Society will present the annual "Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Competition" for awards from the Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Fund. The competition will be held at the Dillard Center for the Arts, Dillard High School, 2501 N.W. 11th St., Fort Lauderdale. Competitors will include more than 30 finalists from Florida high schools, colleges and universities who have met the financial criteria, other scholarship qualifications and are studying jazz. The students will participate in a live musical audition for scholarship awards to attend 2011 summer music camps or for tuition assistance to attend colleges or universities in the fall of 2011. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. and is free and open to the public to attend.

Thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of Jeanette Russell, the Gold Coast Jazz Society has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships in recent years to students from middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities pursuing studies in jazz.

"The dedication and talent of student musicians right here in our community has continued to amaze all of us since our scholarship program began nine years ago," said Tim Ingham, president of the Gold Coast Jazz Society. "We're so grateful to Jeanette Russell and our other donors and volunteers for helping us assist these terrific kids achieve their dreams."

"We've followed the musical progress of many of the students who have attended summer jazz camps, thanks to our assistance," said Pam Dearden, executive director of Gold Coast Jazz. "For most of these kids, attendance to summer music camp would not be possible without a scholarship. For those students attending college to study jazz, the scholarships have helped with the rising tuition costs."

Jeanette Russell, known as "Lady Jazz," was an avid jazz fan and frequently assisted jazz musicians in need. Originally from New York City, Russell was a fashion designer and consultant to prominent clients, one of whom was John Hammond, a jazz promoter and producer, who introduced Russell to the legendary Benny Goodman. At Hammond's urging Russell became involved in the jazz scene in New York and became intimate friends with many jazz musicians, record producers and writers. Mona Hinton, wife of famed bassist Milt Hinton, dubbed Jeanette "Lady Jazz." When she retired to South Florida, Russell and her long-time companion, St. Louis Ray, became an active participant in the Gold Coast Jazz Society's concerts and events. Her love of jazz lives on through her scholarship program.

This show kicks off a great day of music which includes:

Bobby Nathan's Memphis Soul Revue featuring Ed Terry on vocals was born 20 years ago at The China Club in New York City.  MSR  plays all the songs of the great Stax/Volt era that took place from the Late '60's to the early '70's to include artists like Sam & Dave, Wilson Picket, Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and the musicians that made the records, Booker "T", Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, Issac Hayes, and The Memphis Horns.
"They are the masters of these songs and we do our part to re-create the magic of the era that was."

MSR's lineup is:  Ed Terry - Lead vocals, Bobby Nathan - Lead guitar, Andy G - Drums, Joanne Nathan - Keyboards, Doug Treen - Sax & Harp.

Bobby Nathan's original concept for The Memphis Soul Revue came about and culminated from his true love of R & B and Blues music.  The band has survived 20 years of incarnations but the one true constant has been Bobby Nathan bandleader and lead singer Ed Terry along with the legacy of Memphis Soul Music.  Bobby Nathan is a solo blues artist on The Midi City Records label playing in South Florida and northeast United States.

Ed Terry is the original lead singer with the Memphis Soul Revue for over 20 years.  He has been a solo recording artist on Atlantic, MCA, Universal, Epic and Interscope.   Ed has sang on recordings with Stevie Wonder, John Oats, Cissy Houston, Sister Sledge, et al as well as producing songs for Madonna, Aretha, George Michael, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Steve Winwood, John Lennon, David Bowie and Tina Turner.  Ed has appeared as entertainer in the films Carlito's Way and Species.

Andrew Lee Gugliuzza drummer, born in New Orleans and son of Dixieland drummer Bobby Liuzza (Gugliuzza). Andy has spent many years performing in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Florida.

Joanne Nathan as been a member of Memphis Soul Revue for the pat 10 years as keyboard player.  Her love of soul music and blues has led her into her second career in life. Hails from Brooklyn, NY.

Doug Treen sax, harmonica player is the newest member of Memphis Soul Revue.  His funky sax and harmonica expertise adds the brass soul to MSR.
