JazzAid Live at the Banyan Bowl is an eight concert jazz series streamed live from the Pinecrest Gardens' Banyan Bowl Amphitheater. In an effort to both save the famed series this year and help feed families across the nation, the Village of Pinecrest will make this iconic jazz series available to anyone with internet access. 

A generous portion of the proceeds from JazzAid Live will go directly to World Central Kitchen founded by acclaimed international Chef José Andrés to help to feed families affected by the pandemic.

Tickets are $15 per show, or you can purchase the full subscription series for a reduced package rate of $100 for all eight shows. Concerts will air only once at 8:00 p.m. ET the day of the concert on any internet based device including some smart TVs, computer monitors, tablets and smartphones.

Hello all,
As we near the end of the year and reflect on what is important in our lives, I wanted to share a story about a "Special Event" that happened in the Tampa Bay area this fall.

It was a benefit for the late Craig Van Tilbury who related to me, while he was working with me as a guitar player recently, that his "claim to fame" was being the guitar player for Joey Dee and the Starlighters of “The Peppermint Twist” fame in Europe.

"The Best of The Best" of Tampa Bay’s Musicians/Blues Musicians, came to skippers Smoke House on Monday Sept. 27th 2010 to honor Craig’s memory.

In the audience was: Damon Fowler and his band, Sean Chambers, Steve Arvey, Jimmy Griswald, Charlie Morris, Sarasota Slim, Ed Wright, Branson, and George Harris - guitar player and owner of Panda Recording Studios.

Steve Arvey had this to say, "I didn't even know Craig, and I needed an Amp once, and he just loaned me one. What a great guy!"

As a guitar player he was in rotation with Sarasota Slim and slated to play a
gig with me the week he passed on. It was always a pleasure to work with him on shows at Brandy’s and Screwie Louies.

Joey Dee and The Starlighters took the stage joined by George Harris on guitar, and local saxophonist, Tim Eddie, to honor and remember Craig.

The closing show was The Damon Fowler Band joined by Ed Wright on his right, Jimmy Griswald on his left and left of Jimmy was Sean Chambers. They were all playing together, and trading leads from left to right, and back again. They played songs by Craig’s favorite guitar players, from Roy Buchanan to Jimmy Hendrix. Then near the End, Damon Fowler took off his guitar and brought up Branson to play, and Sean Chambers offered his to George Harris, and they continued to pass leads back and forth in an awesome display of musicianship! These are not just the BEST guitar players in Tampa, but knowing them, and playing with the majority of them, these are among the best players in Florida! Not only is a fitting tribute to the man, but also to the music and community to which we all share.

As to my involvement in the local scene as a band leader I use as many of these guys as I can put to work as The ambassador to the Blues Hall of Fame. I initiated inductions into the Blues Hall of Fame, and make sure they receive the recognition they deserve. These are "real deal" guys that ARE playing the Blues. So my involvement is to work with Anybody and Everybody to see to it that the Blues continues to flourish and prosper in Tampa Bay and beyond.

The other ambassadors of The Blues Hall of Fame that are in Florida; Gabe Butterfield and Sally Squitieri of Sopchoppy, Jeff Todd of Central Florida, and Al Stone of Jacksonville are all as committed as I am in this endeavor.

As to Craig--I won't say "Craig YOU will be missed" I'd rather say "Craig, YOU are remembered!"

State contest seeking songs about Florida

Songs about Florida - any aspect of Florida - can be entered until Dec. 31 in the the Will McLean Best New Florida Song Contest, sponsored by the state of Florida.

Since its beginning in 1992, the contest has generated hundreds of songs about every conceivable aspect of Florida: its history, land, water, characters, weather and creatures.

Songs have been serious, comical, romantic and inspirational and have included blues, jazz, folk, country, rap  and classical.

Entries arrive from various areas of the USA, but most come from Florida.

Songs must be submitted to The Will McLean Best New Florida Song Contest at P.O. Box 350335, Grand Island, FL 32735.

The song must be about Florida and must be clearly identifiable as such. Songs may be any type of music and must be the original work of the entrant.

Five judges rate the songs on authenticity, originality, and emotional impact, as well as technical expertise.

Each person may submit up to three songs. Cash prizes are awarded the top three entries. Winners are invited to perform on the main stage at the annual Will McLean Music Festival, March 11-13, 2011 at the Sertoma Youth Ranch in Brooksville, Fla.

All who enter will have an opportunity to share their songs in the Circle of Song area at the festival.

The Will McLean Foundation is sponsoring a series of CDs featuring the finalists of each year. The first CD, with winners from 2006-2010, will be released this month.

New Smyrna Beach Florida 2011 Jazz Fest to be dedicated to Jazzman Harold Blanchard



This in today from our friend in New Smyrna Beach, Marc Monteson:

Harold Blanchard, New Smyrna's Ambassador of Jazz passed away Sunday. This giant in jazz chose to live in our tiny little beach town instead of New York City or any other jazz influenced city.


Harold performed at every Jazz Festival I produced since 2001 and September 26, 2008 during the 8th Annual event, it was proclaimed by the city Harold Blanchard Day.... So I am announcing today the 11th annual New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival September 23-25, 2011 will be dedicated to his memory.

His Bio from the web page of Stetson University:

Harold A. Blanchard achieved considerable prominence in Central Florida as a jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. His compositions have been performed by outstanding jazz artists such as Chick Corea, Ron Carter and Bob James, to name a few.

He was born in New York city to parents who were musicians. His father played saxophone and clarinet with several big bands during the late 1930's and 1940's, including Cab Calloway and Erskine Hawkins. Harold received his early training in piano from his father beginning at age 6, the same year he debuted performing Chopin. At age 7 he began a 10-year study with Juilliard School graduate Edwin Coates, and later, while studying at the Juilliard School of Music, continued such training with famed American pianist Jacques Abram. Harold's first solo recital was performed when he was 14 years old, and his first New York recital occurred a year later.

Harold Blanchard has recorded with the legendary Quincy Jones and has performed throughout the world in places such as El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, Bahamas, and the Middle East, playing for such dignitaries as Prime Minister Harold MacMillan. He composed "Guatemala Connection" for CBS and was commissioned to compose "New Earth Sonata" which was recorded under a CBS-Masterwork's label in the summer of 1983. Additionally, he performed and recorded this large work with noted jazz pianist Chick Corea and world-renowned flutist Hubert Laws. "New Earth" spent 16 months on Billboards's Top 10. The recording of this 28-minute composition highlighted and demonstrated Blanchard's abilities as both a classical and jazz composer. Mr. Blanchard came to Central Florida in 1977 after spending eight years in Guatemala, Central America; and prior to that, ten years in Nassau, Bahamas. In these latter two places he earned a fine reputation as a teacher and performer, and continues to teach privately at his home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Additionally, since the year 1983, he has been on staff as an adjunct professor at Stetson University in Deland, Florida. His jazz improvisation course is required for Stetson University music majors. Harold states: "I want to make jazz more digestible to the listener by inserting improvisation within a classical structure".

During the ensuing years at Stetson he has composed a number of classical works. "The Concertino for Flute and Orchestra", was premiered by the Stetson University Orchestra. In 1989 his "Piano Concerto in E Flat" was commissioned by Stetson University's Artists and Lecturers Committee and premiered on November 17, 1989. In this same year Harold was elected as a member to the prestigious Pi Kappa Lambda Society. His composition " Explorations for Violin Duo and Piano" was commissioned by Routa Kroumovitch and Alvaro Gomez and has been performed in Europe, Canada, Chile, and South America.

In 1991 Harold composed "Slightly Blue" for the Laclede Quartet. The "String Quartet No. 1" was commissioned for the Laclede Quartet in 1993 and premiered on January 23, 1994. "Innocent Meandering" was composed for guitarist Steve Robinson in 1993. It was recently included on Mr. Robinson's latest CD entitled "The American Record".

Arbors Records Second Annual Invitational International Piano Party has been announced for January 15th, 16th and 17th, 2010.

It will be held at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, Clearwater Beach, FL and will feature nine great pianists from around the World: Dick Hyman. Bernd Lhotzky, Louis Mazetier, Rossano Sportiello, Jeff Barnhart, Chris Hopkins, Norm Kubrin, Ehud Asherie and Tom McDermott. Also BED (Dan Barrett, Eddie Erickson and Becky Kilgore). The Last three pianists will perform in the Mainstay Tavern in the Resort.

Buffalo Plane Crash: Two Jazz Musicians On Board

Two victims of Flight 3407 were members of Jazz musician Chuck Mangione's band. a local jazz expert says their deaths are a significant loss to the music world.

Two members of Chuck Mangione's band were en route to play a gig with Mangione in Buffalo when they perished in last night's crash of Continental Flight 3407. Saxaphonost Gerry Niewood and guitarist Coleman Mallett were from Rochester. Leo Rayhill, a local Jazz DJ, says, "They formed great jazz in Upstate New York. They were a nucleus."

Jazz remains America's true musical art form. Being true to form, WXEL- 90.7FM, Palm Beach is pleased to add to its sophisticated and diverse program schedule Jazz Impressions with veteran jazz radio personality Stu Grant. Adds Stu, “During the 60s my father, Alan Grant, was a jazz aficionado, on-air personality, a record producer and a jazz promoter. He was very much a part of the New York City jazz scene and on weekends I would tag along with him and enjoy the music. It left an indelible mark on me. On Thursday February 26, the Cultural Center of Spain brings a unique opportunity to enjoy the best of Spanish jazz with the concert of Isaac Turienzo trío, a true treat for jazz lovers, part of the Beyond CCE program.

Turienzo has been highlighted by the Spanish SGAE as one of the most important Spanish jazz musicians of the Nineties and has been present in practically all of the best jazz festivals, theaters and jazz houses in the World, including the Athens International Jazz Festival, The International Jazz Festival of San Sebastian, The Pushkin Museum Auditorium in Moscow, the European Community Auditorium Palace, Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid, the International Jazz Festival of Getxo, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo and Jovellanos in Gijón, to name a few. During his remarkable career as a jazz musician, he has shared the stage with big names such as Andrezj Oleznizjack, Rebecca Parrish, Jorge Pardo, Miguel Ángel Chastang, Carlos Barreto, Carlos Carli, Chris Kase, Laurent Filipe, Tino di Geraldo, Guillermo Mc Guill, Ove Larsson, Bob Sands and Matthew Simon.

The Miami concert will feature his trio (Isaac at the piano, Miguel Angel Chastang, base and Tino di Geraldo on drums) with the "Jazz the Raíz" (Rooted Jazz) project, a tribute to the deepest music, the one we always carry deep down inside of our hearts, the music of a mother that brings a new perspective of our popular music with true sensibility. All three artists propose a journey through time with and endless horizon, where the ballad and the lullaby turn into a "Havanera". Using universal languages such as jazz or the most updated flamenco, traditional songs are supplemented with originally and elaborated rhythms. Popular songs from Asturias or simply Iberian classics converted into ballads, waltzes and fados turn into a tribute to peace and understanding in the World and a meeting point for good music fans.

Blossom Dearie, the American singer whose little-girl voice and jazzy piano arrangements offered a unique approach to show tunes and the Great American Songbook, died Feb. 7 at her home in Greenwich Village, according to colleagues.

Cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com cited Donald Schaffer, her representative, who said that Ms. Dearie, the singer-songwriter-pianist, died after a long illness. She was 82.
