Two jazz heavyweights come together for one swinging evening as Doug Lawrence, longtime featured tenor saxophonist with the Count Basie Orchestra, joins Steinway Artist Markus Gottschlich and his piano trio at Judson’s Live.
For nearly three decades, Doug Lawrence has occupied one of the most storied tenor saxophone chairs in jazz with the Count Basie Orchestra — a position previously held by such greats as Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, Frank Foster and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. Lawrence has toured the world and performed and recorded with an extraordinary roster of artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Lady Gaga. His career has taken him to major concert halls, jazz clubs and festivals around the world, from Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to the Sydney Opera House and Royal Albert Hall. In 2024, Lawrence was part of the Count Basie Orchestra’s Grammy-winning album Basie Swings the Blues.
Markus Gottschlich brings a distinctly different musical path to the collaboration. Born and raised in Vienna — where he grew up in a residence once occupied by Beethoven — the Austrian-American pianist began classical piano studies at an early age before turning toward jazz. A Steinway Artist, composer and educator, Gottschlich has performed internationally at venues and festivals including the Vienna Jazz Festival and South Korea’s Jarasum International Jazz Festival, while developing a style that blends jazz improvisation with European classical and world-music influences.
Gottschlich also has deep Florida connections. After coming to the United States, he attended Admiral Farragut Academy in Florida, later settled in Miami, studied with South Florida pianist Mike Gerber, founded Jazz Academy Miami and served as artistic director of the Miami Beach Jazz Festival.
At Judson’s Live, Lawrence’s deep connection to the classic Basie swing tradition meets Gottschlich’s lyrical, contemporary piano approach in an intimate collaboration created especially for the listening room.

Founded in 1974, the Central Florida Jazz Society is a Florida 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting jazz. From Dixieland and big-band swing to blues, ballads, and contemporary styles, the Society supports a wide range of jazz presentations and community programs.
