The Crestview High School Band has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction Award, presented by Phi Beta Mu International in recognition of outstanding achievement in band education and performance.
Crestview, located in the Florida Panhandle, is one of only two band programs in the nation selected for the 2026 honor. It is also the first band program in Florida to receive the Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction Award.
The award recognizes band programs that demonstrate exceptional achievement while advancing the values of character, leadership, and excellence. The selection committee recognized the Crestview Band program for its sustained commitment to students and music education.
The honor reflects a musical legacy extending back to the founding of the Crestview Band program in 1938. That history includes generations of students, directors, assistant directors, families, alumni, educators, administrators, and community supporters.
Band Director Jody Dunn emphasized that the award represents the entire Crestview Band program, including its middle school bands and their directors. He also credited former directors Dave Cadle and Lou Lindsay, along with the many educators who helped establish and develop the program.
Crestview High School Principal Victoria Hayden said the recognition reflects the discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and achievement demonstrated by the school’s band students. Okaloosa County School District Superintendent Marcus Chambers also credited the students’ dedication and the leadership of Dunn and his staff.
The Crestview High School Band will be formally recognized during the Phi Beta Mu Awards Breakfast at the 2026 Midwest Clinic, an international music education conference attended by educators, performers, students, and music-industry professionals.
This national recognition places a Florida public-school music program among the country’s leading examples of sustained achievement in band education. It also recognizes the collective contributions of the Crestview and Okaloosa County communities to music education across multiple generations.
