UNF Recognizes Jazz Pianist and Educator Lynne Arriale as 2026 Distinguished Professor

The University of North Florida has recognized internationally acclaimed jazz pianist, composer and educator Lynne Arriale as its 2026 Distinguished Professor, the university’s top faculty honor recognizing achievement in teaching, scholarship and service.

Arriale, Professor of Jazz Studies and Director of Small Ensembles in the UNF School of Music in Jacksonville, was formally recognized during the university’s September 18, 2026 Academic Convocation. UNF originally announced the 2026 faculty award recipients in May.

The Distinguished Professor award recognizes a balanced record of achievement in teaching, scholarship and service. The honor includes an honorarium, commemorative recognition and the opportunity to deliver UNF’s Academic Convocation address.

Arriale brings more than three decades of international performance, recording and educational experience to her work at UNF. Winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, she has performed throughout the United States and internationally, including five appearances at the Kennedy Center and performances across Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas.

Her career has also included performances with artists including Randy Brecker, Benny Golson and Marian McPartland. Arriale has recorded 17 albums as a leader, with multiple releases reaching the top of the JazzWeek radio charts, including two that reached No. 1.

At UNF, Arriale’s work has combined performance with extensive teaching and mentorship. According to the university, she has taught 404 course sections across 19 courses, coordinated 344 student performance opportunities and chaired the Jazz Scholarship Committee since 2009. She has also presented more than 151 clinics at schools and educational institutions.

Her students have continued into graduate programs, received national recognition and performed at major professional and educational events, including the Jazz Education Network conference.

Since joining the UNF faculty, Arriale has also maintained an active creative career, including 338 performances, 10 recorded albums and 45 published original compositions, according to the university.

Arriale holds a Master of Music in piano performance from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music in music theory and piano from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her background includes extensive study in classical piano and jazz improvisation.

The recognition places a particular spotlight on jazz education at UNF and on the continuing role of active professional musicians in teaching, mentoring and preparing developing musicians for careers in jazz.
