The Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior who plans to pursue music studies at an accredited college or university. The $1,000 scholarship is intended for tuition expenses for a student accepted into a music program with a major or minor in Jazz Studies or Jazz Performance.
Through the scholarship, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival seeks to encourage talented young musicians and help preserve jazz by supporting students who plan to continue their musical education and development.
Applicants must submit a completed application along with a brief essay addressing the history of jazz, why the applicant wants to study jazz and why the applicant should receive the scholarship. Applicants must also provide proof of acceptance into an accredited college or university, three references—including one high school teacher—and a recording featuring an up-tempo jazz standard, a blues selection and a ballad. The performance recording may not exceed 15 minutes.
Finalists may also be asked to participate in a live audition before the scholarship selection committee at the University of North Florida Band Room in Jacksonville. The date and time will be provided to the finalists.
The scholarship winner or winners will be announced by the end of June 2027. The selected musician will perform at the Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival Benefit Concerts and during the Amelia Island Jazz Festival in October 2027. Exact performance dates will be announced.
The scholarship award may have the possibility of continuing for as many as four years when the recipient meets the required criteria during each academic term. Complete terms and application requirements are included in the official application.
This Jazz Blues Florida EDU PSA is provided as a community service in support of music education and the development of emerging musicians.
