Memorial Concert & Gathering Planned for David Sloane in Gainesville FL March 30, 2023

PHOTO L to R: Rob Rothschild, Cathy DeWitt and David Ottenberg.
Three of the musical friends who will be honoring saxophonist
Dave Sloane in a special tribute concert.

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2023 | 7:30 PM | $20
302 NE 6th AVE. GAINESVILLE FL

Some of Gainesville's finest jazz musicians will gather on Thursday March 30th to play and pay tribute to their friend and former bandmate, Dave Sloane, at the Thomas Center in Gainesville.

After graduating from the University of Miami and playing gigs in South Florida, Dave had a long and productive career in Gainesville, playing tenor sax and flugelhorn. He worked with Frank Sullivan, Robbie Blake, Cathy DeWitt's MoonDancer, and the Rhythm & Blues Revue, among others. Dave was a beloved teacher among students of all ages. No one will forget his twinkling blue eyes or his encouraging voice saying "That sounded great, man!" He formed a horn quartet, Dave's Dilemma to play contemporary jazz and originals that also played at UF/Shands hospital every Christmas.

Players will include Cathy DeWitt, Nick DeCarlis, Larry Newcomb, David Ottenberg, Taylor Roberts, Rob Rothschild and Thomas Royal, with more surprises to come.

His top songs include the boogie-woogie party favorite “Boom, Boom (Out Go the Lights)” as well as “Snortin’ Whiskey,” “Life in London,” “Heat in the Street” and many more.

New York-based vocalist Lucy Yeghiazaryan – considered one of the top traditional jazz voices in her field - will perform at the Maitland Jazz and Blues Festival with the Jeff Rupert Quartet.

They will share the stage with local favorite Michelle Amato, who has performed and recorded with an incredibly diverse array of artists, including Liza Minnelli, Quincy Jones, Al Green, Sandi Patty, Jon Secada, Michael McDonald, Donna Summer, Jon Hendricks, Celia Cruz, Rita Marley, and world-renowned composer Yanni.

Other jazz artists slated for Maitland’s biggest music event of the year include the UCF Flying Horse Big Band, the Dave Capp Project, Charlie Bertini and the Monster Dixie Jazz Band.
