MAE, Music Arts Enterprises, was begun in 1963 as the brainchild of Charles and Rosalind Katz. Charles played trumpet for the Army and with wife and children Mike, Ken and Gary lived in Japan for five years and France for three years. Upon retirement from the military Roz and Charlie spawned their dream of owning a music store on Davie Boulevard, then a dirt road. Mike graduated with a degree in music education from the University of Miami and Ken with a degree in Architecture from the University of Florida.
In the mid 70's Mike and Ken took the reins and began growing the business. They added lines and physical space. "We grew like an amoeba grows," said Mike. "We just kept adding on and adding on". In the mid 80's the DOT began to acquire the land for the I-95 Davie Boulevard overpass. The search for land led right back to Davie Boulevard. In 1988 construction on the present site began. "This was a dream come true to use my architectural background and build a music store from the ground up," said Ken.
On the same property in 1996 MAE added the warehouse and rental staging area and conference area. While MAE is constantly changing with the customer, the philosophy of the store will never change. Give the best service for the best price and have FUN!

O'Hara's on Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida - Jazz & Blues music gone; empty space remains
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
Las Olas Boulevard gets green space -- for a while
Fort Lauderdale convinces owner of Riverside Hotel to plant sod, landscaping on half-block site intended for a now-delayed expansion
By Brittany Wallman South Florida Sun-Sentinel
FORT LAUDERDALE - Call it Recession Park.
"A vacant half-block on premier Las Olas Boulevard has been planted with grass and lined with bushes and mulch, as a proposed expansion of the historic Riverside Hotel sits on hold.
The Las Olas Co., owner of the Riverside Hotel, asked the city for an extra three years to act on the hotel expansion, and a city vote on that is coming. The company already had shuttered thriving businesses on the block -- including Cafe Europa, Objects d'Art, and O'Hara's Jazz & Blues Cafe -- and in February tore them down.
The vacant properties just east of the Riverside Hotel, stretching to Eighth Avenue, created an unsightly gap on the city's posh shopping boulevard. But the lot was sodded and lightly landscaped this past weekend.
It won't be an official park because it's privately owned and intended for development. But it might be used for weddings and other events."

The Best in Classic Jazz
International Jazz Star Featured in May Jazz Concert
Fort Lauderdale, FL – Fresh from her recent tours of Russia and Mexico, jazz vocalist Nicole Henry has been called “…one of the most impressive live performers to personalize the great American songbook.” by the Japan Times. On May 13, Ms. Henry will be featured in her jazz concert Almost Like Being in Love presented by the Gold Coast Jazz Society. The show will take place on Wednesday, May 13 at 7:45pm the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Single tickets are $35 and $40 and $12 for students with ID. Tickets are still available through the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office at 954-462-0222 or online at http://www.goldcoastjazz.org/ or http://www.browardcenter.org/. A pre-concert Jazz Riff jazz talk will be given by WXEL radio host Stu Grant at 7:00pm in the theater before the show.
With style, grace and a stellar list of international jazz performances and awards, vocalist Nicole Henry sings powerfully to inspire and touch the heart. With three TOP 10 CDs released in the last four years, Nicole brings back elegance and class to jazz. She continues to win awards and accolades, though now performing internationally at clubs and festivals in Japan, Spain, London, Jamaica, Korea, China and Mexico, where she presented her tribute to Billie Holiday. Her performance at the Jazz á Juan les Pins Festival in the south of France won her the Prix du Jury 2007 award as part of their international Révélations vocal jazz competition.
Raised in the arts haven of Bucks County, PA with a mom who always played classical piano in the house, Nicole and her sister studied music and dance. With a full academic scholarship to the University of Miami, she studied architecture for two years before changing majors to advertising and theater. It wasn’t until she recorded for a dance music DJ/producer named Noel Sanger, went on the road performing at jazz and blues clubs and heard her song on Billboard’s Dance Music Charts for eight weeks that she believed she could make a living as a performer. “I knew I wanted to use art to affect people’s lives. And that’s what I can accomplish through my singing…help people relate to their feelings, and then celebrate that feeling.”
Nicole is now a full-time performer and songwriter. She has also tapped her acting background by winning roles in national television commercial campaigns for Verizon Wireless, Amtrak, McDonald's (with Venus and Serena Williams), Air Jamaica, Rite Aid Pharmacies, Hershey's Swoops, Sears Optical and others. She was the lead actress in the feature-length, independent films, In Plain Sight and Chapter and Verse, and starred in a four-part pilot of a children's television series, The Lemonade Stand, aired on select US stations. She also starred in the independent short film Miami Chronicles sponsored by the Independent Film Channel. All three of these films feature original songs by Nicole.
Tickets are still available for this performance. The Gold Coast Jazz Society, a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Season sponsors include HI Foundation, BankAtlantic, DeMeo Young McGrath, Miller Wiggin & Associates, Morgan Stanley, The PaperMill, WLRN FM and the Riverside Hotel. Go online http://www.goldcoastjazz.org/ for more information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society or call 954-524-0805.

Lindy Hop great Frankie Manning dies at 94
BY David Hinckley
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Updated Monday, April 27th 2009, 4:09 PM
Frankie Manning, 90, dances with one of his students, Denise Steele, at his tribute party at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem. Frankie Manning, who pioneered the Lindy Hop in the 1930s, won a Tony a half-century later and inspired swing dancers around the world, died yesterday at Lenox Hill Hospital from complications of pneumonia. But he didn't take the dancing with him.
More than 2,000 swing dancers from 30 countries will come to New York May 21-25 to participate in "FrankieFest 95," which was originally planned to mark his 95th birthday on May 26. Organizers say it will go on, and will now become a memorial celebration — which won't be a big transition, because almost every swing dancer in the world uses moves invented, shaped or polished by Frankie Manning.
A tall, courtly man with endless energy and enthusiasm, Manning lived long enough to see his style of dancing fade away and then spring back to life. He was a cornerstone of that revival, both as a teacher and a dancer himself. He was actively dancing until late last year, when he fell on an overseas trip and suffered lingering complications. He had told friends he still planned to dance at FrankieFest this year — not a minor thing at his birthday celebrations, since he insisted on dancing with at least one woman for each year of his life.
Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Manning moved to Harlem with his family when he was 3. He grew up around jazz and later swing music, and in the 1930s became one of the star dancers at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom. In the elite "Cat's Corner" there, he and partner Fredi Washington won a contest one year by creating the first "air step," also known as an "aerial," where Manning seemed to send Washington flying through the air. Proficient as he was at solo dancing, Manning had an even greater knack for choreographing groups. So when Herbert White put together a troupe that became known as Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, Manning became its unofficial choreographer.

South Florida JAZZ welcomes the Yellowjackets
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is excited to feature one of the most important bands in the current modern and contemporary jazz genre as the Yellowjackets make a rare South Florida visit. This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students at any level with I.D.) and may be purchased from the AutoNation Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Website.
YELLOWJACKETS
Yellowjackets are one of the jazz super-bands of this generation. Formed in 1977 as an outgrowth of the Robben Ford Group, the band played initially played contemporary jazz-rock fusion and R&B, but definitely put some sting into the music. Their success has been critical (multiple Grammy nominations and awards) and commercial, with 24 recordings since 1981. The band evolved according to the personnel, but always has been anchored by keyboardist Russell Ferrante and bassist Jimmy Haslip.
Russell Ferrante grew up with the music of the church, but early was turned on to Miles Davis and John Coltrane in addition to the compositions of Ravel, Debussy and Stravinsky. The same is true for Jimmy Haslip who mainly credits Jimi Hendrix’s inspiration and Jaco Pastorius’s tutelage for his career in music.
The addition of tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer in 1991 marked a major point in the evolution of the band. A master player and big band arranger, Bob has given the band its signature sound and feel. Marcus Baylor, who began his professional career with Cassandra Wilson, and honed it with Kenny Garrett, took over the drum chair in 2000. Obviously, longevity is a band trademark.
Over the years, based upon the personnel, Yellowjackets has changed its direction towards becoming the muscular, straightahead, legitimate jazz ensemble it is today; also after three decades, one of the most popular and certainly long-lived bands in jazz. This will mark the third appearance by Yellowjackets, having played for South Florida JAZZ audiences at two Hollywood Jazz Festivals.
Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
May 9, 2009 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes one of the most acclaimed and longest-lived jazz bands of all time, Yellowjackets, now in their 28th year and fresh off yet another Grammy nomination, this year for Lifecycle.

GRATEFUL DEAD'S BILL KREUTZMANN REUNITES DEAD FOR WANEE MUSIC FEST IN FLORIDA
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
THE DEAD REUNITE FOR A RUN OF DATES THIS SPRING
Kreutzmann is a man of many passions. He started playing drums at the age of 13, despite having been told by his sixth grade music teacher that he couldn't keep a beat. In 1965 the Grateful Dead was born. Over the next 30 years Kreutzmann, with his 5 band mates, created a cultural phenomenon traveling the country making music. While on the road the lead singer, Jerry Garcia, would paint and draw. By the early nineties Garcia was an established artist and Bill was intrigued with Jerry’s digital art. On a day off from performing Jerry invited Bill to his room to show him how the digital process worked. Bill was hooked.
After Jerry’s death in 1995 Kreutzmann moved to Hawaii where he combined his love of photography and digital media. He expanded on what Jerry taught him and began to experiment with 3-D software, animation programs and Photoshop. The result was a body of artwork that was both psychedelic and surreal. He equated creating his digital art to playing drums. He would sit at his computer and his imagination would just flow. While living in Hawaii his other passions included all things oceanic: surfing, kayaking, and diving, and in 1993 made a video, "Ocean Spirit," about a trip he made to Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands.
In 2001, Bill returned to the mainland and had his first one man art exhibit at Walnut Street Gallery in Colorado. Unsure of the reaction he would get from fans, Bill was overwhelmed with the positive response. The show sold out and Bill went on to sell his works across the country. In 2003 and 2004 when The Dead reunited for their summer shows at Red Rocks, Walnut Street Gallery hosted two art exhibits at the amphitheater featuring Kreutzmann’s art. Once again Bill was amazed at the response to his works and the praise from collectors.
The exhibit will feature limited edition works created by Bill Kreutzmann, rare signed work by Jerry Garcia and the photography of the Grateful Dead chronicling their 30 year career. The exhibit will be held at Café Le Cave, 2777 Mannheim Road, Des Plaines, Illinois. The exhibit will be located directly across the street from the concert venue; it is free and open to the public. Hours of the exhibit will be Monday, May 4, 2009 – 12-6 and Tuesday, May 5, 2009 – 10-6.
For more information about the exhibits or interview requests call Walnut Street Gallery at 800.562.3387. Bill’s art can be found exclusively online at http://www.walnutst.com/.

Bill Kreutzmann Biography
Bill Kreutzmann (born May 7, 1946 in Palo Alto, California) was the drummer for legendary rock band the Grateful Dead for their entire 30-year career. Kreutzmann started playing drums at the age of 13, despite having been told by his sixth grade music teacher that he couldn't keep a beat. As a teenager, he met Aldous Huxley at his high school, who encouraged him in his drumming. In 1962, Kreutzmann was working at Dana Morgan's Music Store in Palo Alto, and a young picker named Jerry Garcia stopped in and purchased a banjo from him. Soon after, Garcia also got a job at Dana’s teaching guitar lessons, and forged a musical friendship with Kreutzmann that would span four decades.
Kreutzmann formed a new band, the Zodiacs, in 1963, featuring Pigpen on harmonica, Garcia on bass, and Troy Weidenheimer on guitar. The Zodiacs became the Warlocks by 1965, and it wasn’t long before the Warlocks went electric. Their first real gig was May 5, 1965, two days before Kreutzmann's 19th birthday. In November of 1965, the Warlocks became the Grateful Dead. Meeting fellow percussionist Mickey Hart in the fall of 1967 would have a big impact on Kreutzmann's career. Hart soon joined the Dead, making it one of the first (and few) rock bands to feature two drummers. The two percussionists' remarkable cohesion, synchronicity, and driving power would be a hallmark of the Grateful Dead sound for the next thirty years, earning them the nickname "The Rhythm Devils". Their ten-minute drum duets, a feature of every show from 1978 – 1995 became legendary in the rock world. Kreutzmann remained with the Grateful Dead until its dissolution following the passing of Garcia in 1995, making him one of the four members to play at every single one of the band's 3,500 shows along with Garcia, Weir and Lesh.
During 2006, Kreutzmann teamed up with fellow Grateful Dead bandmate and drummer Mickey Hart, former Phish bassist Mike Gordon and former The Other Ones lead guitarist Steve Kimock to form the Rhythm Devils - a name that dates back to his Dead days given to him and Hart for their legendary drum solos and improvisation. The band features songs from their respective former bands as well as new songs written by Jerry Garcia's songwriting companion Robert Hunter. The Rhythm Devils first tour was Fall 2006 which wrapped up at the popular Vegoose festival in Las Vegas, NV over the Halloween weekend.
Kreutzmann and the Grateful Dead were honored with a life time achievement award at the 2007 Grammy's in Los Angeles, CA. Kreutzmann also does work as a visual artist and, in 2001, began releasing limited edition reproductions of his digital artwork. The newest BK project is a Sirius Radio show called "Drumming into the Light" on The Grateful Dead channel 32 - check it out..........
Walnut Street Gallery
Rock and Roll was not in the mission statement, Rock and Roll Art was not part of the business plan, but very quickly it became the main focus for Walnut Street Gallery. Bill and Laura Eveleigh started Walnut Street Gallery in 1989 with a simple vision to bring internationally and nationally known contemporary artists to the Fort Collins, Colorado area. However, within a month of opening their gallery they were working with Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones and Baron Wolman, the first chief photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine.
The gallery hosted their first show for Ronnie and Baron in the fall of 1989 and it was an overwhelming success. The collectors embraced this new art form with a vengeance and the Eveleigh's decided to take their show on the road. Traveling to cities where rock bands were playing for several days, Walnut Street Gallery set up mini galleries near the concert venues. At the mini galleries they sold the works of the musicians, album cover artists and photographers associated with the bands. Then the musicians began to take notice. Bill Kreutzmann, Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, John Entwistle of The Who and Tico Torres from Bon Jovi all asked to participate in art projects with Walnut Street Gallery. The gallery set up a website and began promoting these musicians' artwork worldwide.Today Walnut Street Gallery continues their work with the musicians, album cover artists and photographers in the music industry. After 20 years the collectors may be going gray, the musicians may be slowing down, and the Eveleigh's prefer home to life on the road. But the music and the art of rock and roll® will last forever.

THE DEAD REUNITE FOR A RUN OF DATES THIS SPRING

Bill Kreutzmann's Art
Chicago, Illinois: Bill Kreutzmann, one of the founding members and drummer for the San Francisco rock and roll band The Grateful Dead, will have his visual art on display and for sale at a special exhibit, “The Art of the Grateful Dead” May 4th and 5th. Kreutzmann is a man of many passions. He started playing drums at the age of 13, despite having been told by his sixth grade music teacher that he couldn't keep a beat. South Florida JAZZ welcomes The Yellowjackets for May 9, 2009 Concert
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
May 9, 2009 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes one of the most acclaimed and longest-lived jazz bands of all time, Yellowjackets, now in their 28th year and fresh off yet another Grammy nomination, this year for Lifecycle.
