Frost School of Music Jazz Vocalist Julia Keefe To Perform at Smithsonian Institute
National Museum of the American Indian as Part of Jazz Appreciation Month
CORAL GABLES, FL (April 9, 2009) – Julia Keefe, a 19 year-old sophomore jazz voice major at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, will perform swing-era classics of legendary jazz singer Mildred Bailey on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. The Jerrol Pennerman Octet, an ensemble from Howard University, will accompany Ms. Keefe. The Smithsonian Institute presents this concert in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.
“Not too many people remember Mildred Bailey, and the huge impact she had on jazz in the 1930s and ‘40s,” says Ms. Keefe. “But she had around 300 recordings and her own radio show, and is thought by some critics to have been the greatest female jazz vocalist of all time. My show is an effort to remind people that Mildred Bailey, and numerous other Native Americans, have been a part of this special All-American art form known as jazz.”
Ms. Keefe began singing in the sixth grade and won an outstanding vocal soloist award at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival in 2007. Ms. Keefe studies voice with Rachel Lebon at the UM Frost School of Music.
