"Juan de Marcos Gonzalez has become arguably the most important contemporary figure in Cuban music, and the link between the older generation and the young talent he champions so enthusiastically."
Nigel Williamson - Soundtracks
FORT PIERCE – The seductive strains of Cuban music, with its lusty bloodline of traditional African rhythms, will shake the Sunrise Theatre to the rafters when Juan de Marcos Gonzales and the Afro-Cuban All Stars take the stage April 7.
Gonzales, one of the architects of the legendary 1996 Buena Vista Social Club recording sessions (bringing a number of Havana’s veteran musicians into the international spotlight), assembled the Afro-Cuban All Stars – essentially a multi-tiered Latin Big Band – using top players from several generations.
The band plays son montuno, contemporary timba, swinging guajira, Afro-Cuban jazz, danzon, tribal abakua, bolero and more.
Gonzalez’ goal – as with Buena Vista – is to keep the musical traditions of the island’s rich Afro-Cuban past alive.
“A few years ago,” says Gonzalez, “young Cuban musicians didn’t care about real Cuban music. Now there are hundreds of bands playing traditional music. Of course music will change, there will be new dances and styles. But we are going to keep the roots. I am very confident about that.”
