About the Album, Live From the BBC

The Lauren Mitchell Band’s sophomore release, “Live, From The Bradfordville Blues Club (BBC)” was recorded in the legendary juke joint on February 8th, 2014.

From Lauren: “It was time to release another album and I really wanted to capture the energy of a LIVE LMB performance for our Believers.  That’s one thing they all love, the experience they get when they come to our shows.  When I thought about all of the amazing venues we play, one place stuck out in my mind, The Bradfordville.   The sound quality is always great there, thanks to Gary Anton & Walter Potter, the people who come to get down and listen to the blues are amazing, and The BBC is an historic land mark, chock full of good “blues mojo” and history.  I knew I wouldn’t find a better place to record live than the BBC!”

From the liner notes:
On All Tracks:
Vocals – Lauren Mitchell
Guitar – Howlin’ Bob FiebertsHammond B3 – “The Professor” Michael Hensley
Bass – Mike Snyder
Drums – Charles “Step” Steptoe
Saxophone  – Dr. Bill Landing
Recorded at The Bradforville Blues Club by Walter Potter on February 8th, 2014
Mixed by Mauricio H. Blanca at 8Beat Studio, Sarasota, FL

What the buzz is about with The LMB!

“Lauren Mitchell is one of the best I've seen.  She is on her way to that place that makes us smile when we get to see the best.  Check her out, an incredible act, and a fine CD.”
Tommy Lee Cook, Owner, The Buckingham Blues Bar, Buckingham, FL

“Much thanks to Lauren Mitchell and her band for another amazing evening at The Alley Blues, Sanford. One of the best sounding shows we've ever had..”
Richard Boogaart, The Alley Blues, Sanford, Florida

“Lauren manages a pretty neat trick as a performer. She can deliver a fully sensual version of “I Just Want To Make Love To You,” complete with some gyrations and leg kicks on top of the Hammond B3 – then go right into a gospel number without giving her audience whiplash. The guys love the form fitting  pants and the women are drawn to her “Just one of the girls” personality.”
Paul Wilborn, Executive Director, The Palladium, St. Pete, FL

“On display was the real soul of the BLUES world.  I don’t often pick an individual artist on a day like this.  They were all wonderful and performed at their best----but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the BLUES singing of Lauren Mitchell.  All I can say is “WOW”.”
Al Kanovsky, Jazz & Blues Florida

“Frontwoman Lauren Mitchell and her galvanizing pipes are backed by a gang of seasoned rock ‘n rollers and bluesmen, all of whom share Mitchell’s affinity for raw power tempered by polished technique.”
Sara Moone, Herald-Tribune

“I credit the buzz of energy here to The Lauren Mitchell Band live on stage, with their eponymous lead singer looking sassy in denim and red high heels, purring and roaring into the microphone and tossing her curly mop about with true rock star abandon. When I arrive, she’s on stage, visibly feeling the music, lifting and lowering her very well-defined eyebrows and gesticulating wildly with a single diva-esque hand.”
The Scenestress, Herald-Tribune

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Soul Singer Lauren Mitchell Follows her Musical Heart

"My first solo singing performance happened in church!" recalls Lauren Mitchell, a woman who, in only a few short years, has crafted a singular, unmistakable voice in the world of blues. "I'd been a member of the chorus for productions, but performing in my grandparent's church was the first time I stood on my own and opened my mouth to sing for an audience."

Lauren remembers being frightened and a little nervous but she also remembers that, as she looked out over the faces in the congregation, "it wasn't too scary-and all those people knew me and loved me and wanted me to succeed."

And succeed she has. The Lauren Mitchell Band is a tour de force, performing around 250 dates per year, nationally and internationally. Lauren and her band perform in concert halls, venues, historic honky tonks, and festivals. She's put together a stellar blues group led by Hammond B3 aficionado, "The Professor" Michael Hensley, and is proud of the fact that she spends a lot of time "in a van, with a bunch of seasoned veteran players, being schooled in the blues!"

Lauren's love of music was passed to her from her grandparents and parents. "My grandfather was a guitarist and my grandmother was a singer. They both also played organ. They met when my grandmother auditioned for the bluegrass/country band my grandfather led. My mom also sang in the church choir and there was always music in the home." Lauren remembers her dad playing guitar. "My favorite tune he played was Mr. Bojangles. I grew up listening to Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight and Fatz Waller and Jelly Roll Morton. My education in soul and blues came from listening to music my parents listened to." Lauren cites Etta James as profoundly influencing her sound. "People recognize the Etta influence," says Lauren. "Our music is definitely more soul that straight blues."

Lauren's gift was recognized by her parents and professional voice lessons became a part of her early life. "I sang opera and theater music through college. I stumbled on Janis Joplin and she deeply impacted my singing. I learned Bobby McGee, of course!" A chance encounter with a Karaoke contest set Lauren's musical path in stone. "My friends insisted I sing Bobby McGee and I won the contest and a hundred bucks! I thought, ‘Man, maybe I should just keep singing this stuff!'" Lauren started digging in to the blues and despite a few meandering career choices (bartending, makeup artist, managing a restaurant) Lauren finally made a heart decision to make music her livelihood.

"I met Michael Hensley in 2005 and we launched The Lauren Mitchell Band in 2011. We haven't looked back since then!" says Lauren.

The Lauren Mitchell Band is releasing Live! From The Bradfordville Blues Club in May of 2014 late this summer. The record follows up the band's first release, Please Come Home. "Our fans liked the first record but said it didn't quite represent the feel and energy of our live performances," says Lauren. "Bradfordville Blues Club is known for fabulous sound and it's a historic juke joint. The place is alive with the musical spirits of Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, John Lee Hooker and James Cotton, to name just a few. When you play music that comes from a place in history that is so rich and so significant to our culture, recording music where legendary figures also played is just magical."

Lauren Mitchell has come a long way from that little girl singing in front of her church congregation. She's now a touring, professional blues singer, fronting a band and wowing audiences along the way. Audiences that know her, love her, and are sure she's succeeding in every musical way.

Truly romantic moments come...(And Allen Kanovsky is there to observe...)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 08/28/14

...far and few between. Picture this---- late night on 33rd Street, Maria Rivas on stage with Danny Burger (drums), Brian Murphy (piano) and Jaimie Ousley on bass. Maria is singing a Joabim Bossa. There are a few couples up and dancing. All of a sudden, a young man, drops to one knee offering a ring box to a young lady. She is Kelly from Wisconsin. He is Francisco from Peru. Kelly stands shock still for a moment and then bends to hug Francisco, still down on one knee. I'll take that as a YES! Mix that with the emotional performance, on every level, by Maria and it turns out to be an exceptional night for all.

My pal, Dr. Jules had met a young couple, Adiam & Koshai at the Aventura Mall and invited them to listen to Maria. They were born in Germay but their parents are from Eritrea. The couple loves JAZZ. Maria opens the evening with "As Time Goes By". Her South American accent adds charm to the lyric. The tempo picks up and Maria breaks out into a full-scale, dynamic scat vocal. This will set the tone for the rest of the night. Jimmy & Nancy, Isabel and brother Jim, Stan, Bill & James and my favorite dance partners Jackie and Denise are in the house anxious to hear Maria and her new found vocal strength. "How High the Moon" continues with smooth scat lines and a Danny Burger solo. A little more bop with Dizzy's "Night In Tunisia". Along with the scat portion, the lyric sung in Espanol. I am pleasantly surprised when Mari dedicates the next tune to me and herself, "Lush Life". The last line of the song "and there I'll rot with the rest of those whose lives are lonely too". Hey, I may rot in some small dive, but, I'll never be lonely thanks to all my warm, wonderful friends--and JAZZ, BLUES & BOOKS. Maria takes a break and the trio does an instrumental "Woody & You". Maria returns with a lively Joabim Samba. Jackie and Denise dance together showing off a lot of --- shaking. I swallow a blood pressure pill.  The count off is rat-tat-tat-tat and Maria sings a rapid paced "I Got Rhythm" which included a 5* scat solo. Denise is up dancing some Charleston steps which Maria follows on stage. Danny steps up and, man o' man, you've never heard drumming like that. Martine & Jacques (the DANCE couple) arrive in time for the start of the 2d set. Maria opens with her very own version of "Besame Mucho" and the latin rhythm has me dancing with Denise , holding her real close at times. (what am I thinking?) "Bei Mir Bist Du Schain" with a Latinas accent has me and Jackie doing a little "Lindy". We are joined on the floor by Martine & Jacques.

Maria invites a countrywoman to the stage. Her name is Elisa Rego. Elisa is tall, blond and very attractive. Additinally she can SING. They do "Summertime", slowly to start but picking up and into a scat fest. It is a visual(Maria 5'2 and Elisa 6'--A Latina and a Scandinavian) and audible delight. Martine & Jacques show off some of their unique dance steps. A romantic ballad in Spanish has Denise & I doing it again. Closer & tighter. Things get hotter(the music I mean) when Maria does "It Don't Mean a Thing". Up-tempo, swinging and jiving. Danny's solo is amazing. Stan Jackson would say "It knocked my sox off". I put it simply as WOW!!!. An instrumental version of "Emily" gives a chance to cool off or cool down. Lucy & Mike Murk come in in time to hear Maria sing "We'll Be Together Again". Once more the accent adds charm. "My Funny Valentine" and "Beginning To See the Light" and then the Bossa Nova during which Francisco proposed to Kelly. Hannah & her husband are in the house. They are not here to play but to listen and enjoy.. The last set and Maria sings "Swing Con Song" which has Paul Shewchuck up and dancing almost as if he knew what he is doing. The gal he was dancing with knew what she was doing, laughing all the way. A beautifully sung "Skylark" and the an improvised "Salsa" number ends the evening. While saying goodnight, Maria tells me that she and Elisa may do a project together. I think it's a wonderful idea. Hannah's husband has given her some home-grown fruits. Maria hands me a tiny nut-like fruit and demonstrates how to eat it. It is a 'manon' and very tasty. She explains that the word 'manon' is used in every way from expletive to explicit love. Heck of a fruit if you ask me. As they say South of the Border----Hasta Manana"

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"

Todd Barkan Selected to Lead Music Programming at Arts Garage - The WORLD is coming to Delray Beach...

The Creative City Collaborative Welcomes Todd Barkan,
 Former Artistic Administrator
Jazz at Lincoln Center, as New Programming Director of Arts Garage
Legendary Jazz Promoter to Bring World-Class Performers
to Arts Garage and Pompano Beach
The Creative City Collaborative is thrilled to announce that Todd Barkan will be the new Programming Director for Arts Garage and special series and festivals in Pompano Beach. Barkan is one the most respected talents in the jazz world and has served as both the Artistic Administrator at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Programming Director of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. His storied career has made him a legend in the business and the Wall Street Journal says, “He’s a jazz-world celebrity—one whose fame is largely based on making other people famous.” Barkan has already begun booking internationally renowned jazz artists at Arts Garage beginning in September with British sensation Polly Gibbons, who is making her North American debut. For more information, www.artsgarage.org.
“We pride ourselves on attracting top talent both on stage and off.  The addition of Todd Barkan solidifies this vision on both of these fronts,” said Alyona Ushe, Executive Director of the Creative City Collaborative. “Todd brings decades of enormous experience to the CCC.  We are confident that his involvement will intensify the transformation of the South Florida arts scene and make this region a top cultural destination.”
“I can think of no better way to be celebrating my 50th year of presenting world class music than by joining the wonderful, hardworking team at Creative City Collaborative as the new Programming Director of Arts Garage, where I will be also be working on special events and festivals in Pompano Beach,” said Barkan. “I feel very honored and blessed in becoming a member of such a wonderful artistic family, and look forward to many years of very creatively productive work that will benefit the communities we serve in countless positive and uplifting ways.”
Known for his quote, ”Take care of the music, and the music will take care of you,” the Ohio native’s first jazz concerts were with luminaries such as The Modern Jazz Quartet, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. Barkan, a professional pianist, was also a savvy entrepreneur, parlaying his only $8000 into ownership of San Francisco’s Keystone Korner. Here, he developed the club into one of the most important jazz presenters in the world from 1972-1983, offering constantly innovative and creative programming during the entire run.
During that span, he also began actively producing jazz recordings, managing and booking artists, and programming all the artists at Keystone Korner and for European and Asian jazz festivals.  Artists as diverse as Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Jimmy Witherspoon, Stan Getz, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Mary Lou Williams, Dexter Gordon, and George Benson called the Keystone Korner, “the best jazz club in the world.”
From 1990-1994, Barkan established and programmed the Keystone Korner Tokyo in Japan, and continued a very busy production schedule for Fantasy/Milestone and several Japanese companies.
“I feel very fortunate to have produced over 800 recordings, which have been acknowledged with multiple Grammy awards in the U.S. and Gold Disc Records in Japan,” noted Barkan, who has produced for artists including Grover Washington, Jr., Freddy Cole, Tommy Flanagan, Chico O’Farrill, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Jimmy Scott, and Bebo Valdes.
After serving as President/Artistic Director of 32 Records in New York City through 2000, Barkan was tapped by Wynton Marsalis to become the Artistic Administrator at Jazz at Lincoln Center in January 2001, and from 2004-20012 served as Programming Director of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, where he facilitated DCCC artistic programming, publicity, and promotion to help build the club into a successful magnet for jazz fans from all over the world.
