James began playing trumpet at 9, and became acquainted with jazz at 10 – when he met Wynton Marsalis! Diving deep into his father’s record collection, he soaked up popular songs, jazz standards, and more, leading to a wide-ranging performing career. Four years ago, he released You’re Gonna Hear From Me, produced by Houston Person for Arbors Records and recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, the jazz world’s most revered recording studio.
The James Suggs Quartet will include Julian Pernett, an impressive pianist in the Master’s program at USF and a member of the USF Jazztet (which James directs), recent USF grad Noel Reyes on bass, and veteran Bay Area drummer Jean Bolduc. We’re eager to hear the selected songs, sure to reflect James’ broad experience and his engaging personality – as well as his brilliance on the horn.
