The season series finale concert features Sheba the Mississippi Queen, whose music draws from a lifetime of experiences with hurt, pain, perseverance and the universal themes at the heart of the Blues. Born Martha Booker in Sunflower, Mississippi, to a sharecropper family, Sheba grew up with music through her father, a gospel singer. She formed Sheba the Mississippi Queen & the Bluesmen in 2018, and the band advanced to the semifinals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2019. Her influences include Billie Holiday, Etta James, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Big Mama Thornton, and her festival appearances have included Springing the Blues, the Coral Gables Blues Festival and the Long Island Blues Festival. Her 2021 Bongo Boy Records album, This Is the Blues, spent more than a year on the Roots Music Report charts.
Appearing with Sheba is Dr. Jules, a singer, songwriter and musician whose longtime study of history extends naturally into his work with the Blues. Dr. Jules spent nearly 30 years in academia, including 20 years as a historical linguist at the University of Florida. He is a strong proponent of keeping the Blues alive by playing it while also studying and sharing its history, with particular attention to recognizing the original Blues artists whose musical contributions and innovations have too often gone without proper credit or compensation. His own body of work includes several albums’ worth of original material, with additional recording projects continuing to develop.
