Florida CruiseFest to the Bahamas with The Nouveaux Honkies & Ben Prestage (Blues/Roots/Americana)

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Bluzpik Rekerdz USA & Cruise Holidays present a cruise to the Bahamas on Royal Caribbean’s “Monarch of the Seas” departing Port Canaveral, FL on May 21, 2010 and returning on May 24, 2010 featuring The Nouveaux Honkies & Ben Prestage. Passengers will be entertained by two of Florida’s most popular acts including private onboard performances, a beach party, private cocktail party, and up close and personal meet & greets with the bands. In addition to the private performances, cruisers will enjoy a weekend full of Royal Caribbean style fun including all onboard dining, cruise entertainment, and access to ship’s facilities and daily activities.

Pricing for the cruise, based on double occupancy, are $449 per person for indoor cabins, $499 for outside and $849 for Junior Suites with balconies. Fully refundable deposits of $150 per person to confirm reservations are now being accepted. Cruise Holidays is offering an onboard credit of $50 per cabin for all reservations received by October 26, 2009. Reservations can be made by contacting Bob Rossi at Cruise Holidays at 772-408-2210 or via e-mail at brossi@cruiseholidays.com or at any Nouveaux Honkies or Ben Prestage live show.

Who are The Nouveaux Honkies? Head south to the East coast of Florida and you might run into them in the town of Port Salerno. This small commercial fishing village is the stomping ground of singer/guitarist Tim O’Donnell and violinist Rebecca Dawkins, who moved there in 2005 from South Carolina. Stir in the mix of Mike Burney on bass and you have the unmistakable sound of this Blues/Roots Country band. The group started touring after their second album “Where Do I Go” was released in early 2008. After a run to Montana and Idaho that summer, the album made its debut on the Roots Country (Americana) Chart at # 14. After 33 weeks on the national chart, “Where Do I Go” peaked at #3 in early 2009.

Blues Review Magazine linked the sounds to “The Stones, with hints of Dire Straights, Curtis Mayfield, Hendrix, and Wolf”. O’Donnell’s vocal style was said to be “an amalgam of Van Morrison and Willy DeVille”. Violinist Rebecca Dawkins crafts her lead lines over popping rhythms and their unique blend of blues, swing and country becomes the sound that fans describe as a reinvention of the musical wheel.

Ben Prestage spent some time as a street performer on historic Beale Street, while living in Memphis, TN. He used to share a spot in front of the New Daisy Theatre with modern blues legends Robert Belfour (Fat Possum Records) and Richard Johnston (2001 International Blues Competition winner). Being a street musician in the “Blues capital of the South” threw Prestage’s music in a new direction. To his show, he added a cigarbox guitar (made by Memphian one-man-band John Lowe) which has stereo guitar and bass strings that can be played independently, at the same time. Then Ben added a series of four foot pedals that can be manipulated by the heels and toes of both feet to play a drum kit. The final result is Ben playing guitar, bass, and drums while singing his own brand of Blues which leaves bottles empty and dance floors full wherever his music takes him.

Ron Carter Concert Presented By South Florida JAZZ

February 14, 2009 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes the most revered bassist in jazz, RON CARTER, who appears with his quartet in concert. Also that evening, SFJ will exhibit paintings by Dr Ferdie Pacheco who will be in attendance at the event.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is extremely delighted to feature a true melding of music and visual arts with Ron Carter in only his second Florida appearance as a bandleader. The first time was a much-heralded appearance at the 2003 Hollywood Jazz Festival, also produced by South Florida JAZZ.

This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students at any level with I.D.) and may be purchased from the AutoNation Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Website.

In conjunction with this concert, Dr Ferdie Pacheco, known to many as “the fight doctor” to Muhammad Ali, but also a celebrated painter, will exhibit pieces from his jazz art oeuvre in the foyer of the theater and will meet and greet concertgoers. Dr Pacheco’s rendering of Ghandi was chosen by the United Nations to grace the 2009 International Day of Nonviolence stamp to be printed by the US Postal Service.

Ron Carter

Undeniably, Ron Carter is the preeminent bass player of the second half of the 20th century and now beyond. His harmonic sophistication and dexterity on the acoustic bass sets him apart from every other practitioner in the history of jazz. In addition to the standard bass he has also employed the cello and the piccolo bass throughout his career.

The pursuit of music began in Detroit with the cello at age 10, but he earned Bachelor of Music and Masters degrees as a bassist. While still a student, he dazzled the jazz world with his prodigious ability. Among his early affiliations were dates with Chico Hamilton, Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk, and Art Farmer prior to joining Miles Davis’s second great quintet that also included Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. The band toured and recorded exhaustively through the 1960s after which he left the band and became the most widely recorded bassist in jazz (more than 2,000 recordings!) in a multitude of settings including his own bands, of course.

Mr. Carter’s exploration has continued throughout his career, including chamber and orchestral work as well as scoring feature films and television shows. A multiple poll-winner as a player, he also enjoys an active teaching career at the university level.

The signature quartet that Ron Carter brings to “Jazz Impressions” features pianist Stephen Scott, Payton Crossley on drums, and Rolando Morales-Matos on percussion.

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
