Etienne Charles -
The performances will feature compositions that trace the path of Sephardic and
African music as it migrated to the Caribbean and South America, resulting in musical
grooves and styles such Choro (Brazil), Biguine (Martinique), Aleke (French
Guiana), Merengue (Venezuela) and the Antilliean Waltz (Trinidad).
Trumpet-player and percussionist Etienne Charles is a Trinidad-born performer and composer who is continuously searching for untold stories and the sounds with which to tell them. Currently associate professor at UM’s Frost School of Music, Charles is a Guggenheim Fellow who recently opened the new David Geffen Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center with his group Creole Soul in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic.
Cuatro virtuoso Jorge Glem is without a doubt one of Venezuela’s musical treasures. Currently residing in NYC, the Latin Grammy winner fuses the traditional instrument with genres such as jazz, salsa, bluegrass, rock and pop, collaborating with artists such as Ruben Blades, Natalia LaFourcade, Carlos Vives, Calle 13 and Paquito D’Rivera.
French cellist Vincent Segal, though classically trained, has taken the cello into new improvisational realms and is mainly known for the variety of his collaborations and unusual projects with artists such as Sting, Elvis Costello, Salif Keita, Cesario Evora, Carlinhos Brown and Blackalicious.
Bassist Or Baraket was born in Jerusalem and is of Moroccan, Iraqi, Argentine and Ashkenazi descent. Raised between Tel Aviv and Buenos Aires, he is currently based in Brooklyn and has become one of the most prominent bassists of his generation. His music explores the links between his South American, North African and Middle Eastern backgrounds and synthesizes the different worlds he inhabits into one personal aesthetic that honors all of them.
Don’t miss this fascinating evening with these brilliant and special performers, piloted by the irrepressible and ever-creative Etienne Charles.
