A Tribute to Cal Tjader

Mainstage Theatre, HCC Performing Arts Building, Ybor
City
“Viva Cal!”
Jazz and Latin music blur in “Viva
Cal!” the next event presented by the Tampa Jazz Club and HCC’s Visual and
Performing Arts Series. The concert takes place on November 17 in the Mainstage
Theatre on HCC’s Ybor City campus at 3:00 PM.
Led by Bay Area
percussionist Frankie Pineiro, this tribute to the late Cal Tjader features the
legendary Kenny Drew Jr. on piano and 19 year old vibraphone phenom Cole
Hazlitt.
Born in Puerto Rico Pineiro began playing music over 35 years
ago. He is also the director of the Guisando Caliente Latin Jazz
Quintet.
Though he travels worldwide performing both jazz and classical
music the Bay Area is fortunate to count Kenny Drew Jr. as one of its residents.
An outstanding soloist he has also performed with a who’s who of musicians
including Stanley Jordan, Stanley Turrentine, Slide Hampton, the Mingus Big
Band, Smokey Robinson, Frank Morgan and many others.
Prodigy Cole Hazlitt
toured the world with Sonny LaRosa’s band as a pre-teenager. He now studies
music at Tarpon Springs High and is a member of the Ruth Eckerd Youth Jazz
Band.
Rounding out the sextet are Joe Porter on bass, Hector Mayoral on
percussion and John Jenkins on drums.
West Coast vibraphonist Cal Tjader
was a pioneer in blending modern jazz sounds with a Latin flavor. After breaking
into the music business with Dave Brubeck and George Shearing, Tjader developed
his new sound and had a hit in 1965 with “Soul Sauce” a reworking of Dizzy
Gillespie and Chano Pozo’s classic “Guachi Guaro.” Though he passed away in 1982
his influences still live on in the music of Carlos Santana and Poncho
Sanchez.
