The Old Dillard Museum will celebrate the birthday of Fort Lauderdale’s greatest band director, the late great saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, at a concert featuring the protégé of his trumpet playing brother, Nat Adderley. This concert will bring the dazzling trumpeting style of Longineu Parsons at the school whose music program was once led by Cannonball Adderley. Between 1948 and 1956, the legendary Cannonball Adderley was a Broward County band director at Dillard High School. During Cannonball’s tenure he taught at both the historic Old Dillard site at 1009 NW 4th Street (now a museum on the National Register of Historic Sites), and the current home of Dillard High School at 2501 NW 11th Street. The Old Dillard Museum now hosts an annual concert series–the Cannonball Jazz Series–in honor of a saxophonist who
became the most commercially successful jazz musician of his day.
Longineu is a highly acclaimed musician and composer hailed by critics internationally as being one of the world’s finest trumpet players. Over his career, he has shared the stage and recording studio with the likes of Nat Adderley, Cab Calloway, Doc Severinson, Herbie Mann, Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, Branford Marsalis and more. Longineau appeared in the national production of “Satchmo,” and as trumpet soloist on the hit PBS Great Performances special, “Three Mo’ Tenors.”
He will be coming to Fort Lauderdale from Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, where he is Associate Professor of Trumpet. He will be playing with local artists including the amazing saxophonist Randy Corinthian, who recently released his CD, “Bittersweet.”
The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. September 14, 2013 at the Dillard Center for the Performing Arts 2501 NW 11th Street, Fort Lauderdale 33311.
