There have been a bunch of tributes to Jack Simpson for his work as Florida’s most highly regarded jazz broadcaster. And now, 10 years after his 40th anniversary bash, another big event is coming up this Saturday, April 20, 2013, on the UCF campus in Orlando.  It is a free concert featuring many of Florida's best known musicians. The concert  will mark 30 years of Jazz on the Beach with one station—WUCF (89.9 FM). His WUCF shows are aired on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM on WUCF FM and  rebroadcast by WFIT 89.5 FM in Brevard from 7  to 10  PM on Thursdays.

There is no charge for the tour and concert. No tickets needed, Just show up and hope you can get a seat.  There will be a tour  of the station from 12:30 PM, followed by the concert at 2 PM at a nearby auditorium in the Harris Engineering Center (Bldg. 116).  For more info and to have your name put on the list of attendees, call Pat Stuckey at 407-823-0899.

Many of Florida’s top musicians have agreed to perform. Two musical superstars will be there.  One is  multi-instrumentalist  Ira Sullivan, who has  played at all of Jack’s many benefits and is Jack’s favorite musician. The other is Larry Coryell, widely regarded as the nation’s top jazz guitarist. The basic band will be led by trumpeter Charlie Bertini and will include Tracy Alexander, on drums Jeff Phillips on piano, Charlie Silva on bass and Rich Walker on guitar.

Others who will be called up to perform include trombonists Bill Allred and Herb Bruce; trumpeter Bobby Pickwood; clarinetist Syl Lafata; vocalists Linda Cole, Sybil Gage, Jacqueline Jones; pianists Carol Stein, Ron  Teixeira, Michael Kramer and Dave Sheffield; bassists Ben Kramer and Rabbit Simmons. Also Stan Soloko and Greg Parnell on drums. Plus Jack’s son, Jeff Simpson, on sax and flute.

The address for all of UCF is 4000 Central Florida Blvd, Orlando FL 32186 (map). It is suggested that you get MapQuest driving directions to that address.  Once you are on campus, ask how to get to the The Harris Center.
