In opposition to what most people think, I do not spend every night in
a "joint", as defined in a previous essay. Some evenings I might go
to the opera or ballet, a flick or a reading. You must notice I left out the
symphony. For whatever the reason, live orchestra performances put me to sleep.
Last night I opted, at the invitation of Dr. Jules Oaklander, to attend the
theater at Broward
Center , for a play
titled "Million Dollar Quartet". It's about a night in Rock 'n Roll
history. A cast of 8 actor/musicians portrayed the legendary characters. Carl
Perkins (Lee Ferris), Johnny Cash (Scott Moreau), Jerry Lee Lewis (Martin
Kaye), Elvis Presley (Cody Slaughter), Jay Perkins (Chuck Zayas), Fluke (Billy
Shaffer), Sam Phillips (Christopher Ryan Grant) and Dyanne (Kelly Lamont).
Every member of the cast, not only played the role, but actually played their
respective instruments. If you grew up with the music you would have heard all
of the eras big hits. From "Blue Suede Shoes" to "Great Balls of
Fire", "Long Tall Sally" to "I Hear You Knocking",
"See You Later Alligator" to "Folsom Prison Blues".
Twenty-two songs in all, including an impassioned "Down By the Riverside ". It was a
musical concert and play rolled into a very entertaining package. It had me
clappin' tappin' and even had some "youngsters(they were once) dancin' in
the aisles. If you grew up with R&R it will bring back great memories. See
it if you can!!!
