Porter and Mardi Gras….those are just a few of the themes of this year’s Jazz
Concert Series presented by the Gold Coast Jazz Society. Celebrating 21 years
of jazz, the Gold Coast Jazz Society is presenting another year of renowned jazz
talent in their annual classic jazz concert series presented at the Amaturo
Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The twenty-first season
opens with a concert featuring swinging big band music by the highly acclaimed
big band from Florida International University. Under the direction of James
Hacker, the FIU Big Band will perform a concert titled “In the Mood…Swinging
with the Big Bands.” This concert of big band music will feature some of the
favorites of the big band era as well as choice original compositions.
James Hacker is the Director of the
Studio Jazz Big Band, the University Brass Choir, is trumpet instructor and
Associate Director of Marketing for the FIU School of Music. He has been a
faculty member at the Florida International University School of Music since
1995. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Hacker currently holds
trumpet positions with the Boca Symphonia and Atlantic Classical Orchestra and
is a founding member of both the Miami Brass Consort and the Florida Trumpet
Quartet. Since coming to Miami in 1986, he has been a regular performer and/or
soloist with the Miami City Ballet, Florida Grand Opera, Florida Philharmonic,
Naples Philharmonic, Seraphic Fire, Miami Chamber Symphony, Miami Symphony, Palm
Beach Symphony, Orchestra Miami, Palm Beach Pops, Miami Bach Society, as well as
other orchestral and chamber ensembles throughout the South Florida area. Mr.
Hacker also performs regularly with many artists’ concert tours and Broadway
shows throughout the state, and can be heard on numerous CDs, television and
radio commercials as a studio musician. His talents and versatility have
enabled him to travel throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
