2014 Season Highlights
Florida’s premier live music festival presented by University of Miami Frost School of Music and presenting sponsor UHealth at Coral Gables opens its 31st season October 10, 2014 with the Frost Symphony Orchestra and closes November 8 with beloved blues artist Keb’ Mo’. World-class instrumentalists, ensembles, singers, songwriters and composers alongside astounding faculty and student musicians from the Frost School of Music present 35 unique concerts and free events over 30 days.
From October 12-18, classical music lovers will enjoy two inventive chamber music trios, Time for Three and Pulse, while jazz patrons will be wowed by high energy Bass Extremes, steel pan virtuoso Leon Foster Thomas, and The Jazz Cruise All-Stars with singer Niki Haris, pianist Shelly Berg, and more. The excitement continues as percussionist Sammy Figueroa and vocalist Glaucia Nasser pair up for a fabulous Latin/Brazilian fusion.
Festival Miami also offers a children’s afternoon concert featuring Parents’ Choice Award winners In The Nick Of Time on October 19.
In Week Two, a classical guitar concert features Concierto de Aranjuez and other guitar favorites performed by Rafael PadrĂ³n, Rene Izquierdo, Isaac Bustos and Federico Musgrove with string orchestra. Beloved jazz vocalist Patti Austin then performs a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald with the Frost Studio Jazz Band. Concertgoers will also enjoy an unforgettable evening with rock music legend Jorma Kaukonen.
Renowned opera star Dawn Upshaw and composer Maria Schneider then present the Florida premiere of their three-time Grammy Award winning project Winter Morning Walks with the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra on October 25. The following evening, music and dance alumni from the National YoungArts Foundation including Grammy nominated cellist Dave Eggar present Moments: an Interdisciplinary Showcase (http://www.youngarts.org).
Highlights for Week Three include an explosive Jazz Guitar Summit, acclaimed piano duo Genova And Dimitrov, celebrated jazz arranger and bassist John Clayton with the Frost Concert Jazz Band, plus sensational new singer-songwriter Fantine in a fabulous fusion of Latin and Soul presented by Emilio Estefan.
The musical extravaganza continues November 2 as the Frost Wind Ensemble presents an all-Gershwin program under the direction of Gary Green featuring Broadway touring sensation Alicia Hall Moran, operatic favorite Kevin Short and Grammy winning violinist Mark O’connor. Gold Medalist of the Van Cliburn International Competition Vadym Kholodenko offers a solo piano recital on November 4 and jazz singer Gretchen Parlato appears November 5 with the Frost Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble. The final week of Festival Miami also presents Guatemalan singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno, recipient of last year’s Latin Grammy for Best New Artist on November 6.
Festival Miami’s closing weekend includes Jazz Roots: Georgia on My Mind—Celebrating Ray Charles, at the Adrienne Arsht Center on November 7 featuring an all-star roster of special guest artists and the Frost School of Music's Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra. Festival Miami 2014 wraps up in UM Gusman Concert Hall in an exciting concert that features everybody’s favorite Grammy winning blues vocalist/guitarist Keb’ Mo’ on November 8. The outstanding entertainer performs music from his latest album BLUESAmericana, plus hits from his illustrious 20-year career.
