One of the nicest things about... ( the South Florida scene are the places and players and people and Allen Kanovsky telling us about them!)

...JAZZ, is that you can expect the unexpected. Last night at Cafe Vico the Clarence Palmer Quartet was on the bill.

Clarence plays B3/piano and does some of the vocals. With him are James Cotman on drums, George Candy(piano/B3) and Jim Adle on tenor and soprano saxophones. The unexpected surprises were Kevin Wilde sitting in on flugelhorn/trumpet and Gerri Tesoro taking the mic to do a song. Their program starts early at 7PM and continues to 10 or a little after. I arrived about 7:15 in time to hear Clarence play and sing "The Very Thought Of You". Jim added an emotional solo and James used soft mallets to accent the mood. The next tune was 'straiht-ahead JAZZ' and I didn't know the tune title. It didn't matter 'cause George played on of those solos that make an evening memorable. Clarence must have been in a romantic mood because next was "Be My Love" Don't be fooled by all the ballads, this band plays JAZZ. They follow with "Greensleeves" and each of them shows off a little. Clarence and George switch places and the close the set with a rousing "How High The Moon".

Denise with pal Randy have arrived as well as Ms. Jackie Deering. I am starving and she promised 'dinner' was on her --- I mean her treat. Kevin unpacks his horns for the start of the 2d set and a bop tune titled Sonnymoon for Two". Kevin is playing the flugelhorn and is not afraid to show his be-bop chops with lots of triplets and upper register play. James' drumming keeps the show going. Denise and a gal named Nancy are shaking that 'thang'. I think I am the only one old enough to remember the tune "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" which is next which was a big band hit 'way' back in the day. When they play "Girl From Ipanema" I take to the floor wirh Denise. Randy, not to be outdone, asks Jackie to dance. The 4 of us crowd the small area available for dancing.  George is at the B3 when the band does an up tempo "I Got Rhythm". Kevin continues his display of "chops"  and James is in drum heaven. Denise and Jackie are on the floor doing a modified "Charleston" that seems to have more 'bootie' shaking than I remeber my older sisters doing. "Me & Mrs. Jones" has every one who can stand up and dancing. Richie 'Race' is in the room to get a feel for the new JAZZ room in town.

Jim takes the mic to do the BLUES, "Pride and Joy". It sets the mood for Kevin's solid flugelhorn solo. Jim's tenor solo let's you know that JAZZ musicians always start with the BLUES. Soulful. The last set has Clarence back at the B3. Ms. Gerri Tesoro takes the stage and the mic to intone "Funny Valentine". The tempo is super-slow ballad. That makes the tune doubly hard to sing. Gerri handles it nicely, even taking chances with the first chorus. Admirable to say the least. The tones of the B3 are predominant in "Kiss the Good Life Goodbye" with a Clarence vocal. The evening at Cafe Vico ends with Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll". We are all off to Blue Jean Blues and Jesse Jones Jr. It's Danny Burger's (the brushmeister) Wednesday Night Showcase. With Danny and Jesse are Brian(2 brain) Murphy on piano and Dave Wilkerson on upright bass. Jesse is playing flute when I come in. Denise is on the dance floor with Isabel doing some well remembered 'lindy' steps. Jesse loves having fun and does so with a be-bop version of "Yippee Aye O ky Yea". Jesse closes the set with "Black n???". The last set starts with an incredible solo by Brian and then the band does "Hard Times" during which Brian quotes "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". Hey it ain't even Thanksgiving!!!!. Piano Bob is in the house just in time to catch Jesse doing Hoagy Carmichaels unforgettable "Stardust". Jesse does stuff with this tune that 'nobody else can do'. They all have some fun with "Dis Here" and then bop "I Remember April". Brian's solo inspires Dave to play a fingering wonder on bass. Jesse picks up the flute to do "I'm Coming Home".

The Real Tracy Fields plays it as her closer on Monday nights. Jesse scats it home with some of those incredible falsetto riffs and says goodnight with "Love, Peace & JAZZ.

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
