Australian jazz guitarist Albare will be coming through South Florida on his East Coast tour in support of his new album, Long Way, which features such great musicians as Antonio Sanchez (drums), George Garzone (tenor sax), Leo Genovese (piano) and Albare’s longtime musical collaborator Evripidis Evripidous (bass).  Released October 9^th, Long Way is already receiving a very positive reception on national jazz radio and press.

Albare’s touring band, which he calls iTD (for International Travel Diary), also features Hendrick Meurkens, plus two of his Australian mates, Phil Rex (bass) and Phil Turcio (piano), along with the Venezuelan drummer Pablo Bencid.  They will be appearing at The Van Dyke in South Beach for two nights: Thursday, November 29^th and Friday November 30^th, at 9 PM and 10:30 PM.

Born in Morocco, raised in France and Israel, Albare emigrated to Australia at the age of 27 where he first made his mark as a major player in the burgeoning ‘acid jazz’ scene, recording a string of albums under the Festival label.   Returning to his true love, instrumental jazz, Albare (the nom de guerre of Albert Dadon) soon became a popular artist on the Australian jazz scene.

Not content with just being a player, Albare also became a major force in the development of jazz in Australia.  As chairman and artistic director of the Melbourne Jazz Festival for many years, he had the opportunity to present concerts with some of greatest artists in the world, such as Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Gary Burton and McCoy Tyner, and this too informed his musical sensibility.  He also founded and chairs the board of the The Australian Jazz Awards. In 2008 he received an Order of Australia (AM) for service to the arts, particularly for his work with the Melbourne Jazz Festival.

Albare’s latest album, Long Way, on the prestigious German jazz label, Enja Records, embodies Albare’s sound: energetic improvisational jazz, romantic lyricism, with hints of his African, Middle Eastern and African heritage.  Produced by Enja Records’ president Matthias Winckelman in Brooklyn’s Studio One, there are moments of pure magic, as five players get together to spend the afternoon and express themselves.  In concert, Albare iTD brings that same sense of freedom and musicality to their show.  Jazz-lovers who attend these two evenings at The Van Dyke are in for a rare treat.

Some very impressive jazz musicians from Australia have passed through South Florida lately: saxophonist Troy Roberts, drummer Dan Susnjer, and now Albare iTD!  For two nights we’ll have another opportunity to enjoy another of Australia’s great players.  Please give this guitarist from Down Under a warm South Florida welcome.

travelin' man - Al was meant to follow the music...

I flew 1300 miles(one way) to visit my children and grand-kids. I drove 100 miles(round trip) to hear Troy Roberts(tenor sax), Emmet Cohen(keyboard) and Evan Sherman(drums). Both trips were well worth-while. Troy and the band were appearing at a place called "The Wayward". It is located in a N.Y. neighborhood that is yet to be "gentrified". The southeast corner of 9th St. and Ave.C. I walked into the past. The 12 or so light bulbs (in ceiling fixtures) were of the incandescent type and must have been among the first 50 made by Thomas Edison, the cash register was manufactured during the depression and the "jockey box" was older than me.Talk about atmosphere.  There is an absolute positive side. The drinks were unusually good and the menu, limited, but unusual and interesting. Good tasting too. advise checking out their web-site. But I didn't take the road trip to critique the venue. I went to listen to the music. I did. They opened the set with JAZZ's national anthem,"How High the Moon". During the set they paid tribute to Thelonius Monk and New Orleans by playing "In Walked Bud" with a traditional rhythm. A really nice rendition of "Skylark" gave Emmet and Evan a chance to "showoff" a little. It goes without mention that Troy is an exceptional talent. Emmet and Evan are two young cats that are talented, creative and definitely stars of the future...

I had a chance to chat with Troy and mentioned Aaron Lebos and the unusual 9/4 time signature Aaron had employed. Troy told me that he did a version of Stella by Starlight in "9" and it is on Youtube. The long drive back made it necessary for me to leave after the first set. I enjoyed the evening and the music. Robert (the owner) is a great fan of "live music" in a variety of genres and so has music most nights. Don't go for lunch--they don't open 'til 7PM.  If you're in The Apple it is well worth a visit. No matter how hard they try, it is not "The East Village" or the fashionable "Alphabet City". To me it will always be a neighborhood I knew so well, "The Lower East Side".

night and day - Al makes light of the dark?

To wax philosophical, life is made up of contrasts---light & dark, red & green, happy & sad. I could probably go on for a thousand words but I will close the sentence with Night and Day. Last "night" I had the good fortune to listen to some great Boogie-Woogie. To"day" my good fortune continued and I heard some JAZZ-ROCK. That's how Aaron Lebos defined the music his band "Reality" plays. The band, Jim Gasior (keyboards) Eric England (bass) and Rudolfo Zuniga (drums), as Aaron put it, "played their asses off". Yes, they did. The program was made up of original tunes, "original" being the operative word. Original, creative and just great to listen to. They played a song titled "Nine" in 9/4 time, with Jim doing a piano solo in 5/4 time. We're all familiar with 5/4 (i.e.Take Five), but 9/4 was new to me as well as Ed Bell who commented on the odd time signature.
Strange as it seems, just yesterday when commenting on the Boogie-Woogie concert I brought up the subject and tried to explain it. Now I am again back in my usual state of total confusion and hope I haven't added to yours. In any case, Aaron calls it JAZZ-ROCK, I say it is totally, TODAY’S JAZZ. Three cheers for, in the words of a Dizzy Gillespie tune, "Things To Come".

EDITOR’S NOTE – We thinks Al is in a hurry to catch that plane up to the Big Apple and missed pointing out the he was at the WLRN Studio for Ed Bell’s South Florida Arts Beat show today where this performance transpired.

boogie-woogie nights - Al boogies with the best...

Okay. Jitterbugs--this is music 101---Time Signatures---They're the numbers at the beginning of a piece of music. One on top of the other, like this 4/4  . The top is # of beats to------ahhh-it's too complicated. If you really need to know this kind of stuff then Google "time signatures".

Suffice it to say there's two/quarter time up to eight/quarter time.  Two like in the Texas Two Step, Three like in the waltz, Four like in swing and be-bop and BLUES, Five like in Brubeck, Six like in orchestral stuff and EIGHT like in Boogie-Woogie. Last night at Arts Garage it was definitely, without doubt nor hesitation, 8/4 time. Eight beats at its best. Piano Bob gathered up a gang of piano players that "shook it up".

Out of New Orleans, Memphis, and even Key West, they showed up to play the first night of the two day 3^rd Annual South Florida Boogie Woogie Piano Festival at Arts Garage in Delray. Piano Bob started it off with Boogie, Ragtime, bit of Stride and some BLUES. Backing Bob was George Caldwell on upright bass. Next up was "English Bob" Andrews. From New Orleans and you could tell. He brought up Joe Panker(drums) to add a little lift to the music. "English Bob"(do you wonder where he's from?) then introduced Barry Cuda (I did not make that up) who gave us a history lesson, via piano solos and vocals of BLUES and Boogie dating from 1861(Cuba) to 1971(New Orleans). Victor Wainwright closed out the show. He recently returned from doing a BLUES Cruise on Celebrity. Victor is as versatile an entertainer as you would want to meet. He had the audience join in on a couple of songs and his rendition of the break-up song "Roberta, Roberta" will stay with me for a long while. The formal performance over, a couple of guys, along with Tom Worrell joined in a good old fashioned, two piano, jam. There's another performance on Friday night with a different line up that includes:

look for a silver lining - Al's checking the pockets for change again we guess...

As good as the music line-up was for Wednesday night, I had none on my schedule. Instead my plan was to have dinner with my pal Frank. Frank is a retired N.Y. Detective( just like my son). He is good company and the two of us can toss around more B.S. than you'll find in the holding pen at the stockyards in Chicago. Around 2 in the afternoon, Frank calls, to say that he has to cancel-- for good reason. ie; a woman. Ordinarily I might have said "girl" but Frank hasn't dated a "girl" in 50 years. Now the silver lining. A short while later my other buddy, Bill, (Yes. I have more than one friend in this lonely world) calls reporting that he has two ducats for the FIU Studio JAZZ Big Band at the Broward Center. I could not ask for a better remedy for my ---bitter?----disappointment. The Gold Coast JAZZ Society was celebrating their 21st birthday with this concert. The swinging band was worthy of the task. The band is directed by Jim Hacker who was assigned in the Spring of 2011. Charts from Miller and Goodman, compositions from nowaday composers, made for an absolutely pleasurable evening, closing out with a blaring, blazing "Sing, Sing, Sing".
Not wanting to ruin my reputation, by coming home before mid-night, I headed to BJB's where the fabled Richie Cole(Chicago) was making an appearance. Was it a good decision, you ask? My life is riddled with bad decisions. Not Tonight. I walked through the doors and there was a jam session going on and I mean a JAM SESSION.  The rhythm section--Danny Burger(drums), Brian Murphy(piano), Chuck Bergeron(bass). Sitting in on guitar George Garcia. Two trumpets, Jack Siegel and Buddy Jacobs. On a stool, center stage is Richie Cole with the shiniest sax I have ever seen hanging from the neck of a JAZZ musician. JAZZophiles worldwide talk about "those nights". Those nights when something special, for some unknown reason, is going on. Well this was one of them. Swingin', soarin', groovin' and flyin' high. One of the tunes Richie did was "I Can't Get Started" which morphed into "Moody's Mood For Love". I sat there with my jaws agape. I wasn't the only one. Rick Katz(Miami JAZZ Co-op)
usually leaves early. (It's a long way home for him). He hung out with me until they literally asked us to leave so they could close the joint. 
So, when disappointment comes your way----"look for the silver lining"---every cloud has one. Tonight Boogie-Woogie at Art's Garage, Delray.
