When it's party time... (...at the Coral Gable Blues Fest w/ Allen Kanovsky, it is TIME TO PARTY!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 02/xx/15

...down South you know it's gonna be real when the opening act is Joey Gilmore and his band. Not only that, the locale for this free event (Coral Gables BLUES Festival) is Harald Neuweig's Fritz and Franz Bierhaus. Outdoors on their patio. German beers, chicken schnitzel and bratwurst are available from closeby stands.

Joey has Ivan on lead guitar, Sonny Boy Williams on keys, Robert Carter (bass) and Maurice Dukes doing the stick work. They get the party rockin' with "I'm Gonna Wreck Somebodies Happy Home". A little funk with "Oopapadoo" and the party is on.

A young couple, Natalie and Lucas Sanchez, have their young children listening to the BLUES at an early age. People are smiling and feeling good. Joey keeps the vibe going with "I Don't Want No Woman Breaking Up My Happy Home". Joey invites folks to get up and dance. He says "take your shoes off baby and put 'em in your purse" which is part of a BLUES lyric that continues "and lay your head down here". Which is not part of this invitation. Canela (gal I danced with at Riverwal BLUES Fest is there with her hubby and girl friend, Nellie. After getting a "Yes you can" nod from her husband I had Canela dancing with me --- or vice-versa. Joey follows with "Gotta Long Time To Go" and then Sonny Boy gets in a boogie mood to sing and lay "Nadine" with Ivan laying down a strong solo portion as well. Nellie gives me the "Wanna do it?" look. I have never refused a ladie invitation in my entire life. (to dance, I mean). "'til the Next Time I See You"  and then a couple of "I'm Not Gonna" tunes------"Lose"----"Love You" to close his part of the nights festivities.

Biscuit Miller and the Mix is up next. They "Came A Long Way From" Indianapolis to perform. Biscuit plays bass, Alex plays guitar, Bobby Wilson plays a Heritage guitar and is a native of the city where those guitars are made. Then we come to Myron Robinson on drums. Myron's 'nom de stage' is Dr. Love. Last night he was wearing a top hat with red bandana wrap and matching scarf. His usual doctors coat and stethoscope were missing. The stethoscope has been put to good use on occassion----examining the chests of willing women.

The band opens with "A Bottle of Whiskey and a Bottle of Wine" and you know this is a "good time" band. I've got Nellie in my arms again. They play "She Lkes To Boogie". Nellie and I are at it again. If I die dancing it will be a heck of a way 'to go'. There's only one other way that would be better. Think about it. Results at a later date. They do "Let's Go Fishin'". The double entendre of old time BLUES is in the line "You bring the bait and I'll bring the pole". Probably more explicit then entendre. "Let's Get Funky",  "I Got the Stay At Home BLUES" and "Walk, Talk With You Baby" follow.

Capt. Bob and Davis show up for the music and in time to catch the "Mojo" song which also contained a little "Folsom Prison". How about "Put Some Butter On My Biscuits" and "Are You Ready To Get Ready"---'cause here I come. That was pure, undiluted 'funk'. An original "Blow A Kiss" on which Bobby Wilson does some really nice guitar work. Then one written for Dr. Love. The good Doctor gets up to lead a funk (conga) line. The set ends with lots of happy folks on their feet.

Randy McAllister and his Texas band is next. Randy plays drums, washboard and harp. There's a gal fiddler, Matt on bass and a lead guitar. Names unknown at the moment. (will research). They must be from near the Texas/Louisiana border 'cause they open with a definitively Cajun sound. Next, a little bit of religion "Wanderer" with a quote of "Amazing Grace". The sound was a little loud even for me. It was distracting. Lots of folks were up in front of the stage to see Randy playing washboard. We heard "Got To Move Away Baby", "You've Got Me Cryig", "Home Again" and "Bleeding In My Heart". Davis (Capt. Bobs sidekick) is enjoying the sounds. Niles (Red Beans) Blaize and wife, Marie, join me to listen in. A nice fiddle solo to a Texas BLUES sound, "She's A Makeshift Momma" followed by "She's A Makeshift Girl". They do "He's A Texas Boy" to Cajun rhythm and Niles is carried back home. That tune ends the set and the music is moved inside the Bierhaus for JL Fulks.

Charlie, Jimmy and I find a table and beverages and are ready to enjoy JL. He has Ken Burgner on bass and a drummer none of us are familiar with. "I'm Going Home Where the Bed Is Always Nice and Warm" is really a BLUES which gives J.L. a chance to show off his guitar and vocal talent. They play "Out With Another Man" and J.L.'s originality is on display with some very new and creative chords. They play "Mojo Working" which almost puts me to sleep. It's just played way too often and seems to be a "filler" tune. They play "Going Back To Memphis" which restores my interest and ends the set.

Jimmy, Charlie and I are ready for the homeward trek. It takes almost half an hour for us to say goodnight to all the folks we know but we make it out of there only to run into one lane only traffic on the northbound 95. What do 3 tired BLUESiacs talk about in heavy traffic --- it ain't the BLUES.

Music starts again at 1pm today in Coral Gables. Time to roll...

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
