...an important part in my life. Mother, older sisters,
childhood sweetheart, Navy girlfriend, an L.A. artist, Hong Kong bar
girls, first wife, second wife (childhood sweetheart), return of first wife and
the dancing partners who are part of my life today. Women have also played an
important part in the life and development of the American Art Form we all
love --- JAZZ.
Yesterday I was invited to the 8th Anniversary Party of "Women In JAZZ South Florida> Diva Joan Cartwright was the mistress of ceremony and offered a symposium on the influence women had on the growth of the music. First explaining how the voice was the first musical instrument and continuing on with the birth of the BLUES. She told the biographies of popular artists as well as some I never heard of. From Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters to Mary Lou Williams, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington. She told about Dorothy Donegan, who was unknown to me and how she influenced both rag-time and boogie-woogie piano playing. Joan sang a couple, inviting audience participation and accompnied by Roberta DeMuro on keyboard. Donna Singer got up to do "What A Difference A Day Makes". Yvette Keiser followed with "God Bless the Child". Joan teaches young children and told about how she uses music to sometimes calm them down. Her original piece, "Translated" is the perfect tool.
Music does "Soothe the Savage Beast" including me! Engaged in a wonderful conversation with a young women, vocalist, Jus' Cynthia. She has a rich knowledge of Black history in Florida and lives in an historic house in what was known as Carver Ranches. She invited me to visit and I will.

A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
