It seems to me that I have been doing a lot of time travel over the last couple of weeks. It continued Friday night with going to The Miami Shores Country Club to hear Lourdes Valentin. The Club goes back to a time when excess was the norm. Ballrooms, dining halls and what looks like a 100 seat oval bar. The back bar is filled with top-shelf labels and they know how to make all the tasty cocktails. The back wall of the lounge is all glass, overlooking a driving range. The sound system was a challenge but has been overcome by the work of John Challenor. The acoustics are not bad considering the size and scope of the room. Many of the vocalists fans showed up, including my pal Bill.

Lourdes was joined by Brian Murphy(piano) and Orlando Machado(drums/Sound of Vision), Ms. Valentin guided us through time and genre with songs covering a wide range. From "If I Only Had A Brain" to "Our Love Is Here To Stay" to the Latin beat "Que Sas" to the spiritual "Wade In The Water" and the whimsical "What A Little Moonlight Can Do" from 100 years ago. Lourdes sang "Close Your Eyes" . I did and imagined myself back in the "Big Band" era and, for those of you who might remember, "The Glen Island Casino". Ask Great Grandma. Quite a trip for the first Friday of the New Year. Hmmmm. Looking forward maybe a trip to Broadway for Lourdes Valentin.

South Florida JAZZ, in its 21^st year, as the principal purveyors of modern jazz in the region since 1991, formally announces its new season schedule. All performances will be held at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd (MAP) on the Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie, Florida. The focus of the organization remains steadfastly on presenting artists of national and international repute under the aegis of Artistic Director Ron Weber and gently guided by the world-acclaimed vibraphonist/educator Gary Burton, Artistic Advisor, who believes this lineup is potentially the strongest in the organization’s history.

Stanley Jordan Trio

Stanley Jordan is the most gifted guitarists of his generation, renowned as the uncontested master of the spectacular two-handed tap technique that allows him to play rhythm and melody simultaneously. Stanley Jordan is, however, much more than a technical phenomenon. His interpretations – from Bach to Bird to the Beatles - are true masterpieces. But the strength and depth of his multi-faceted music stem from his belief in the power of his art. For Stanley, making music has always been more than just entertainment; it is a genuine restorative journey, which will inspire and heal the soul, in the immediate and utterly therapeutic sense of the word.

3 Cohens (Anat, Avishai and Yuval) Sextet

The best jazz groups are made up of kindred spirits, but the rare family band has something more — an intuitive feel for one other that goes beyond words and gestures to a kind of genetic telepathy. The 3 Cohens are that sort of uncommon collective, a trio of siblings from Tel Aviv, Israel — tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Anat Cohen, trumpeter Avishai Cohen and soprano saxophonist Yuval Cohen — whose sense of jazz history and improvisational interplay is both uncannily fluent and wonderfully, infectiously warm. Even with the soaring individual careers each of the Cohens is achieving, there is something special about the music the three make together.

Fred Hersch Trio

A superior soloist, accompanist and interpreter of ballads, Fred Hersch began to play the piano at age four and composed and improvised by seven. Following graduation from the New England Conservatory in 1977, the Cincinnati native moved to New Yorkand worked as a sideman with the likes of Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Jane Ira Bloom and formed a long-term working relationship with Janis Siegel, while also leading his own groups. He has been amazingly prolific and largely unsung creator of beautiful compositions and reconstructions. His live solo albumAlone at the Vanguard received two Grammy nominations in 2011.

John Scofield’s Hollowbody Band featuring Mike Stern

It is helpful to understand that “hollow body” refers to a guitar construction! The band features two guitarists - the other being the redoubtable Mike Stern - who were Gary Burton protégés and also played in 1980s iterations of the Miles Davis band, giving both bona fide fusion credentials. Scofield, or “Sco,” as he is universally known, has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is still going strong. Sco is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post- bop jazz, funk-edged electronica, and even R & B. He is comfortable in several idioms and blurs the lines at will creating a distinctive musical style and personality.

Tom Harrell Quintet

A supreme trumpeter and flugelhornist, Tom Harrell creates a seemingly endless flow of bubbling, intricate ideas conveyed with an almost serene delivery. Neither aggressively avant-garde, nor riveted in the past, Tom Harrell’s music simply celebrates sonic beauty for its own sake. Praised for his pure melodic brilliance, he is widely recognized as one of the most creative and uncompromising jazz instrumentalists and composers of our time. For over four decades, close to 300 recordings, and numerous accolades, Tom manages to stay fresh. His quintet has shown remarkable continuity and cohesion. It is a great band.

Kurt Elling

There are no obvious parallels in the music industry. Chicagonative Kurt Elling is the greatest male jazz singer – or just jazz singer – of our time. In a career spanning 16 years, Elling has risen to international prominence as a jazz artist and creative singer. An intellectual superman, he is a master of “vocalese” and scatting. Remarkably, each of his nine albums was nominated for a Grammy® Award and Dedicated to You won in 2010. He is a perennial critics poll-winner and his quartet tours the world, performing to critical acclaim in Europe, Asia, Canada,Israel, and Australia. This will be Mr. Elling’s fifth performance for South Florida JAZZ.

   Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division.

New Years Eve and forever after...and we are sure Al knows of what he speaks.

First off, Happy and Lucky 2013 to all! Second, I hope Susan Stocker who had to cancel her New Years Party (flu) is feeling better and third a big, big thanks to D and C for showing me the town and introducing me to the BLUES community in Gainesville. The plan was for dinner and BLUES at Dos Mamas Eastside Eatery. The name told me I was going to have "A Real Good Time". Amongst realtors "location, location, location" is the primary reason a business will succeed. Amongst folks who go out for an evening - good food, good music, and cordial hosts is what counts most. To find Dos Mamas you need to head out towards the airport, make a left at Sonny's BBQ, drive past a bowling alley, auto repair shop, auto parts store, another repair shop and park in front of a concrete block building at the tail end of an industrial park. Step inside and see a beautiful smile and the open arms of Rosa who owns Dos Mamas. The ambiance is bare bones but you can feel the warmth of coming home.

Charlie, Debby and I are here for a New Years Eve celebration and to listen to the BLUES. On stage are Barbara and Mark Armbrecht aka Middleground. They carry us through the history of female BLUES singers from Bessie Smith and the suggestive, double entendre, some times plain "dirty" lyrics, to Janis Joplin’s "Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz." All are done in good taste and with a smile on Barbara's face.

Next up was the R. Mutt BLUES Band. Paul Goble(guitar), Richard Heipp(bass), Dan Stepp(keys, vocal, guitar) and sitting in on drums Billy Bowker. They opened with a Louis Jordan number and again we are treated to a history lesson. From some early BLUES, to R&B, to Rock 'n Roll. They did another LJ hit, "Early In The Mornin” and “I ain't got nothin' but the BLUES”. Having lived through all those years of transition from traditional Gospel, to BLUES to R&B and on to Rock I shiver to think that they gave birth to 3 bastard children --- Acid, Metal, and Rap. We had a great meal, listened to some talented musicians, and wrapped the evening up with a champagne toast and BLUES jam with Eddie Jacoby(guitar) and his brother Mark (harp) joining in.

But, it wasn't over. Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin. The New Years Eve Party continued New Years Day at the home of Mike and Therese Markowitz (Little Mike and the Tornadoes). Mike plays harp, keys, and vocalizes. In addition he plays some really mean kitchen.

Rice, black eyed peas, garden grown greens, home made sausage with shrimp in "heavenly sauce", "on and on, on and on, on and on." This is a pretty big house and the size was needed to accommodate the guest list of players and lovers --- of the BLUES that is. Anna Marie and her guitarist Tom Holtz (Anna Marie & Friends), Earle "Bo" Page (banjo, and bass w/Little Mike and the Tornadoes), Mark and Barbara, still carrying on after last night, Kenny Eunice and wife Martha Liddel (Kenny MC’s for Little Jake and the Soul Searchers), Rob Richardson (Pres. of North Central Florida Blues Society) and his wife Natalie --- Charlie, Debby and me. We, or should I say I, stuffed ourselves on great food including Debby’s Crab Dip, drank myself into at least the "outer limits" and in general met some wonderful folks and enjoyed every minute.

Middle Ground and the R. Mutt BLUES Band will represent the North Central Florida Blues Society at the IBC in Memphis this year.

Mike Markowitz and Clay Goldstein are the only "Members of the Tribe" that I know of who play BLUES harp. Any more of you out there? Let us know.

The new edition of Jazz & Blues Florida, Florida's best and only free online source for information on live jazz and blues in clubs, concerts and festivals, is now available. This issue marks the first month of the fifth year of being totally online.
