...when 2 JAZZ musicians meet, maybe for the first time,
and connect in a special way. It happened Friday at Ed Bell's (WLRN
91.3FM) South Florida Arts Beat live broadcast.
The featured guest was violinist Vitali Imereli.
He was joined by Silvano Monasterios playing piano, Mke Piolet on drums
and the ever smiling Paul Shewchuk on bass. Vitali started all by himself with
a super up-tempo "Wabash Cannonball" which became "A-Train"
when the trio joined in. Along the way Vitali quoted "Exactly Like
You". A spirited exchange of 4's between Vitali, Silvano and
Mike gave us a little insight into what would follow. Silvano had the
intro to "It's Only A Paper Moon". He also produced a 5* solo on the
number.
It was during an exchange of 4's that musical lightning struck.
Vitali and Silvano matching each others brilliance. Creativity. Imagination.
Musicianship. Crowded into 4 bar rotations. One of those very special moments
in JAZZ. Silvano introduced "My One and Only Love" Vitali's emotional
side was revealed with an almost heart rending violin exhibition of
excellence.
I was sitting with my buddies Bill Rutan and Rick
Katz (Miami Jazz Cooperative) and we were still licking our fingers from the Pollo Tropical
sponsor provided chicken lunch when the quartet did the be-bop tune
"Billie's Bounce". They needed to fill some time, so Vitali produced a
solo cadenza performance which morphed into a jumping BLUES. No better way to
end a session.
Rick mentioned that they already have more than 35
musicians signed up for their Anniversary Jam. Check listings.
Al's Disclaimer:
A
short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not
book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review
artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by
anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like
what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I
never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would
you like to dance?"
