...ended 'round midnight Monday.
It started at Cafe Vico in Ft. Lauderdale and concluded at the Open Stage in Coral Gables with Miami Jazz Co-op's weekly Rent Party Monday. JAZZ. BLUES and then all over again. Charlie Boyer and I overdid it a wee bit but we were not alone. Last night at the Open Stage we had an unusual treat. Two very good bands performing one after another. The opener was The Sound of Vision. A trio with Valerio Cantore on keys, Scott Klarman playing tenor and Ewi and the one and only O R L A N D O Machado on a drum kit with 4 cymbals, bongos, cowbells, the standard hi-hat, drums and assorted other things to shake or hit. The first tune was Jose Feliciano's "Affirmation" done in the be-bop vernacular. Scott using the Ewi played the bass parts to Valerios keyboard solo. It was followed by Richie Sanborn's "Chicano Style". Deborah and Duane are seated with Charlie and I. Duane is gape-jawed at the display of talent. Orlando delivers some tricky cowbell phrases making it fun for all. A romantic keyboard solo transforms into Brazilian samba. Changing styles they do "Make It Funky".

The trio not only plays, they compose. 2 original
compositions "She" and "A Love Tale" illustrate
their acumen at the art. Scott demonstrates the versatality of the Ewi
using clarinet and other horn sound. "Love For Sale" is done ala Tito
Puente(N.Y. mambo). They are half-way through when you realize the next tune is
"Moonwalk". Talk about improvisation!!!. "Isn't it BLUES",
"That Girl", "Take A Walk", "Something Caliente",
"Two Inches Below" and concluding with a break-neck tempoed
"Caravan".
And this was just the start of a great night of JAZZ.
It takes a while to break down and set up. Meanwhile the conversation around
the room is all about the performance we all had enjoyed. Sammy Figueroa is
planning a new CD to be out in May. The band is going to give all the
Miami JAZZ Co-op Rent Party goers a preview of the album. Sammy is on congas,
Dave Chiverton on drums, Gabriel Vivas on bass, John Michilak on saxes, Cisco
Dimas playing trumpet and the 'thousand notes to the bar' man Silvano
Monasterios at the keyboard.
The tunes we will hear are all compositions by
Gabriel or Silvano. I was too enthralled to make note of tune titles. I was
fascinated by the sounds I was hearing. No written word can describe the solos
played by these super-talented musicians. One after the other, John then
Cisco, then Silvano & Gabriel. Sammy keeping up and Dave keeping them
all in line. There were a couple with no countable time register, others as
strict as possible. Unison work was precise. Solos creative. Incredible
harmonics. Some tempos beyond belief. The band did about 8 tunes and left us
all wanting a lot more. I would have stayed 'til dawns early light if they
continued to play. I quote Charlie Boyer when he said, during the music,
"As real as it gets." Vera.
My
youngest grandson is on a one-nite visit. Maybe Le Chat Noir for the evening
Jam. Maybe Rita Wilburn at the Mardi Gras. Maybe Ice Cream a Jacksons.
Maybe!!!!!

A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
