...Crayolas? A lot. How many guitarists showed up for the Miami JAZZ Co-op rent Party at Open Stage last night? A lot. How many emotions can be revealed by a JAZZ artists rendition of a tune. A lot. The warmth of love. The cold of betrayal. The wonder of a kiss. The tragedy of 'goodbyes'. Aaron Lebos playing the music of the 'day after tomorrow'. Eddie Balzola touching me with "Lush Life". Ramatis transporting me to Carnaval. Randall Dollahon making me think of love's long gone with "Tenderly". Martin Hand playing pure JAZZ. John Hart bringing the BLUES home. Jamie Ousley (bass) and John Yarling (drums) supplied the rhythmic undertones. Young Fernando Ulibarri opened the evening. It was a foretelling of things to come. He set the bar high. Lucian Williams did not make it easy for himself by selecting "Yardbird Suite". Bob Hanni played a "Here Comes That Rainy Day" solo following with "Like Someone In Love" with John & Jamie. Sandy Poltarack and Tom Lippincott were next and romance was in the air with "In Your Own Sweet Way". Sandy did "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" with bass and drums. Lindsey Blair is up and shows why he has been producing some top rated CDs with 'No Greater Love". Neil and Jorge Garcia team up for "I Hear A rhapsody" Jorge ends the first set with "Blackbird". Joe Donato gave me a music lesson explaining the there are two different tunes. "ByeBye Blackbird" and "Blackbird" One from the swing era and one born post-bop.

The 2nd set was just as satisfying as the first. I have
already mentioned whom and what was played in the second set except
for the duo of Davis & Dow. Lindsey Blair and Matt Bonelli join
the duo for an incredible performance of a Wes Montgomery composition. Julie's
beauty both vocally and physically were a welcome relief from all the testosterone of the rest of the evening. An exciting scat/counterpoint with Lindsey and
Kelly were a highlight of the evening. Eddie did the previously mentioned
"Lush Life" solo followed by "Caravan" with the trio. The
show ended with almost everyone on stage to do "Stolen Moments". It
was certainly a night that will be remembered for years to come.

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
