Florida’s Got the Blues - Hear History Come Alive at the Matheson’s New Music Exhibition in Gainesville, FL

Coming for the first time to Gainesville the Florida Museum of History’s new exhibition entitled Florida’s Got the Blues.  This exhibition will be open at the Matheson History Museum from Monday, February 9 through Thursday, April 30, 2015. This exhibit showcases musicians who pioneered the blues music during the early twentieth century.  Hear Florida’s musical heritage come alive at this interactive exhibition, which features a blues ensemble and a blues stage.  See the Matheson transformed into a Blues-eum great for kids and kids at heart.  Explore the story of the many notable blues artists who had roots in Florida.  Stand face-to-face with the sunglasses of the late, great Ray Charles, who grew up in Greenville, Florida. Other artifacts include a 1960s stage costume belonging to Bo Diddley.  The exhibition features the story of other Florida musicians including Tampa Red, Diamond Teeth Mary, Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers and many more.  The exhibit also highlights the impact of Florida in the evolution of both Blues and Rock n’ Roll.   The Matheson History Museum is open from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm on Monday through Thursday. Admission is a requested donation of $5 per person.

The Matheson History Museum also invites the community to hear history come alive at several upcoming events.  These events include: Family FunDay on Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 1-4 pm.  This event highlights the contribution of African Americans to Blues music.  There will also be several singer-songwriter presentations by local musicians such as the Dixie Desperados on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 6-8 pm.  Yale professor James Hepokoski will make a presentation on Thursday, February 26, 2015 from 6-8 pm.  Stan Lynch will make a presentation on Thursday, March 12, 2015 from 6-8 pm.
