Coral Gables United Church of Christ
Community Arts Program (CAP)
Summer Concert Series marks its 29th Season
with a Spectacular Summer Concert Series Line-up.
This summer, June 5 through August 14, in a quiet Miami neighborhood and within the Coral Gables United Church of Christ’s intimate, historic Spanish-revival style setting, concert goers will have the unique opportunity to be awed and entertained by the music industry’s most-talented and revered classical and jazz figures. These artists will perform and delight audiences on the Community Arts Program 2014 Summer Concert Series!
The Community Arts Program Summer Concert Series has entertained more than 64,000 people since it began in 1985. The Series has grown into a valued tradition and, more recently, part of a Community Arts Program that also provides music education to children within its Conservatory for the Arts. “The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series is a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in the intimate and beautiful Coral Gables United Church of Christ,” says Shelton G. Berg, University of Miami Dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music. “The CAP Conservatory for the Arts provides high-quality music education to children, many of whom would otherwise be denied access to the wonder of music and the beauty of the artistic spirit.”
“We are very excited to again present a diverse and world-class line up of artists,” says Mark Hart, Executive & Artistic Director of the Community Arts Program. “It’s an honor to welcome concert goers from across the state and as far away as Europe, and rewarding to see the growth of our music education program for kids! In all, we’ve come to provide exceptional cultural and educationally-enriching experiences for more than 3,000 children and adults each year!”
Community Arts Program 2014 Summer Concert Series Line Up
The 2014 Summer Concert Series opens with a proud piece of American-music heritage. In the summer of 1941, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra outranked every other band. It could swing with the best of them; and no other band could come close to Tommy’s when it came to playing ballads. Tommy Dorsey, “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing,” was a master at creating warm, sentimental, and musical moods-at superb dancing and listening tempos. In an incredible evening, you’ll swing to standards old and new. Bring your dancing shoes! Opening for the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra will be the Community Arts Program ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble, fresh from its Essentially Ellington performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center!
Impassioned performances, compelling music making and mastery of a broad and varied selection of music have made Anne Akiko Meyers one of the world’s premier concert violinists and top-selling recording artist. She burst into national prominence at age 11 when she twice performed on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. By the time her debut disc of the Barber and Bruch violin concertos was released at age 18, she was recognized as one of the stars of her generation. Recently, she was given the prestigious honor of being awarded—on lifetime loan—the violin considered by many as the finest sounding violin in existence, the ‘Ex-Vieuxtemps’ Guarneri del Gesu, dated 1741. An enchanting evening awaits concertgoers with Anne Akiko Meyers, pianist Max Levinson, works of Mozart, Ravel, Piazzolla, and two exciting East Coast premieres!
To many music enthusiasts, the Four Freshmen need no introduction. Starting as college students in 1948, the young group won fame with its renditions of Graduation Day, Poinciana, Day by Day, and It’s a Blue World. Stan Kenton played a major role in advancing the early career of the Four Freshman, and its unique sound strongly influenced other vocal groups, such as Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and the Beach Boys. Now, more than 65-years later, the names and faces have changed a few times. But, the harmony and legendary sound of the Four Freshmen continue to fascinate audiences worldwide as it also gives new treatments to the Great American Songbook. This concert will take one through the heart of America and into the holiday with a smile…guaranteed!
Celino Romero, grandson of the famous Celedonio Romero, is recognized by countless fans as the youngest member of the renowned Los Romeros, the Romero Guitar Quartet, where Celino is joined by his father, Celin, Uncle Pepe, and cousin Lito. As a soloist, Celino is no less remarkable, performing in numerous recitals and appearances with such orchestras as the San Francisco Symphony, Houston Symphony, Ottawa Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and many others. Celino has certainly earned his title within “The Royal Family of the Guitar.” As with his Uncle Pepe in last year's Summer Concert Series, the 2014 Summer Concert Series brings another unforgettable night of guitar. Here’s to another purely intimate and astoundingly magical evening!
An artist long intrigued by contrasts and hybrids, James Carter resists comfortable categorization. Born and raised in Detroit, Carter grew up surrounded by music, soaking up everything from funk and fusion to rock, soul, and various strains of acoustic jazz. Carter’s debut recording, 1993’s JC on the Set, announced the arrival of a superlative new talent equally expressive on alto, tenor, and baritone sax (though he’s added several other horns over the years, most importantly, soprano sax). This 2014 Summer Concert Series evening will take one on a festive jazz feast with all the trimmings, featuring Carter on (many) saxes, Gerard Gibbs on Hammond B3(!), and Leonard King on drums. Concertgoers will groove!
The Community Arts Program 2014 Summer Concert Series closes with an unforgettable arrow to heart. Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, beginning a forty-year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching. His creative output has continued unabated, from top-forty hits I Will Be in Love and I’ll Come Running to I Can Dream of You and Boatman, both recorded by his brother James. Livingston’s musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire of upbeat storytelling and touching ballads within his versatile range of folk, pop, gospel, and jazz. Concertgoers will revel in an intimate evening with a versatile performer who will embrace them…from start to finish!
