Celebrating its 30th
Anniversary Season this October, the University of Miami Frost School of
Music’s acclaimed Festival Miami
-- Florida ’s
premier live music festival -- will present unique programming by a diverse blend of
award-winning artists in a variety of genres who showcase their artistic
prowess alongside astounding students and faculty artists from the Frost School
of Music throughout October 2013. More than 25 concerts and events are organized
into four themes: Great Performances,
Jazz and Beyond, Music of the Americas, and Creative
American Music.
The FROST STUDIO
JAZZ BAND performs a high-energy tribute to multi-Grammy winning singer-songwriter
BRUCE HORNSBY -- a Frost School of
Music alumnus -- featuring new arrangements of music from throughout his
illustrious career, on October 11. breakthrough hit single “One of Us,” which
sold over 3 million copies on first release. International salsa singer-songwriter-guitarist LUIS ENRIQUE -- who is renowned for his popular hit single “Yo No Sé Mañana” -- will perform his “romantic salsa style” on
October 12. The following night, October 13, Festival
Miami presents Fiddles on Fire, featuring the return of
crossover violin master MARK O’CONNOR, a Festival Miami favorite who brilliantly melds folk, country and
classical traditions into distinctive forms. He will be joined
by GLENN BASHAM for an extraordinary display of violin virtuosity of
epic dimension with fingers flying, toes tapping, and a blaze of excitement as
they create an improvisatory mash-up of roaring bluegrass, jazz and country
fiddle. Student fiddlers and
national champion finalists from the Frost School of Music will also showcase
their prodigious talents. The MANHATTAN PIANO TRIO, an electrifying
chamber group that has quickly become one of the most exciting and dynamic
young ensembles in the U.S., will perform a concert on October 16, featuring
compositions by Frost School of Music faculty CHARLES MASON, LANSING
MCLOSKEY, and DOROTHY HINDMAN. Grammy-winning
conductor and composer JOSÉ SEREBRIER returns to the
Festival Miami stage on October 22 and 23 to conduct two programs with the COSTA RICA NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.
Thirty years ago, Serebrier was the first artistic director of a new
“International Music Festival of the Americas ,” now known as Festival

extraordinaire CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE’s trio performs on October 30. A three-time Grammy Award winner, McBride has worked with
the best of the very best in jazz, R&B, and pop music. Festival Miami
concludes its 2013 season in collaboration with Jazz Roots—A Larry Rosen Jazz
Series with Jazz Roots: Pink Panther at 50.
This spectacular concert staged on November 1 at the Adrienne Arsht
Center celebrates the 50th
anniversary of the iconic film, The Pink
Panther, and its composer—the musical genius Henry Mancini, who is renowned
for his memorable film and television scores. This tribute program features an
all-star roster of special guest artists, backed by the University of Miami
Frost School of Music's extraordinary HENRY

Thirty years ago, conductor,
composer and orchestrator José Serebrier was the first
artistic director of a new “International Music Festival of the Americas ,” now
known as Festival Miami. Now with eight Grammy awards,
including the Latin Grammy for "Best Classical Album of 2004”
and a celebrated career as a conductor, Serebrier returns with the Costa Rica
National Symphony Orchestra in the spirit of the maestro’s founding vision to
bring internationally acclaimed touring artists and orchestras to Miami. The
first program opens with a U.S. premiere of Imágines by acclaimed Costa Rican
composer Vinicio Meza. Then,
pianist Shelly Berg performs a
stunning rendition of Gershwin’s Rhapsody
in Blue for orchestra plus jazz trio. The concert concludes with lively

Costa Rica National Symphony Orchestra’s second program at Festival Miami
presents two more premieres by Latin American
composers: De la Sabiduría del Rey Salomón by Marvin Camacho (U.S. premiere) and They
Rode Into the Sunset—Music for an Imaginary Film by José Serebrier (world premiere). Outstanding flutist Sharon Bezaly then takes the stage as
featured soloist in Serebrier’s colorful Flute Concerto with Tango. The
evening concludes with dance music from two popular operas: Three scenes from Carmen
Symphony by Georges Bizet/arr. José Serebrier and “Polovtsian Dances”

Festival Miami presents a special concert in
celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin
Britten, one of the 20th century’s greatest composers. The
festivities begin with a captivating pre-concert presentation, providing
insight into the composer’s life and work. Tenor soloist and concert host Tony Boutté is featured in works
showcasing many of the Frost School of Music’s outstanding faculty, students,
and ensembles. The Frost Chorale
under the direction of Karen Kennedy
performs “Choral Dances from Gloriana” and the Frost Opera Theater presents a scene from Britten's A Midsummer
Night's Dream. Faculty members Alan
Johnson and Richard Todd join
Boutté to perform Britten’s captivating Canticle III, Still falls the rain. Two competition-winning students then
perform two of Britten’s solo works, Twelve Variations on a
Theme for solo piano and Elegy for solo viola. The Frost Symphony Orchestra performs one
of Britten’s final works, Suite on English Folk Tunes ‘A Time There Was…’
To round out the commemoration, Boutté will join the Frost Symphony to give the
first public performance of Britten's Three Small Songs, plus
the U.S.
premiere of Everyone Sang, for tenor and orchestra.
