The final round of the 2015
International Blues Challenge was held today, Saturday January 24, 2015 at the
Orpheum Theater in Memphis TN.

Band 2nd place - Noah Wotherspoon representing the Dayton Blues Society
Band 3rd place - Nico Wayne Toussaint representing the Southern California Blues Society
Solo/duo 1st place - Randy McQuay representing the Cape Fear Blues Society
Solo/duo 2nd place - Brian Keith Wallen representing the Dayton Blues Society
Best Self Produced CD - Altered Five - representing the Grafton Blues Association
Lee Oskar Harmonica Award - Nico Wayne Toussaint representing the Southern California Blues Society
Best Guitarist – Solo/Duo (St. Blues Guitars) - Ben Rice representing the Ashland Blues Society
Best Guitarist – Band (Gibson & Category 5) - Noah Wotherspoon representing the Dayton Blues Society
This is the culmination of
the annual year-long, world-wide competition to award and recognize the best
unsigned blues-based bands in the world.
The IBC is a five-day event
that includes both band and solo/duo blues music competition, youth and international
showcases, massive amounts of socializing, late-night jams, some Beale Street
romancing, and record labels presenting
their artists. Typically, over 250 (band, solo/duo and youth) acts from 40
states and two dozen countries participate in the four rounds in Memphis.
Significantly, the acts cannot enter directly, but are sponsored by one of our
200 affiliated organizations that are so critical to nurturing Blues culture in
their own region. These events and awards are a culmination of activities
undertaken by our affiliates and serve our mission by providing a vehicle
through which they can promote, preserve and ensure the future of Blues music
in their region via their own competitions to determine which up-and-coming act
they will send to Memphis for a once-in-a-lifetime artistic and educational
opportunity. The top acts receive cash prizes, professional services and
career-changing gigs, and each year, competitors other than those judged as
“winners” are “discovered” and as a result, doors open for their future musical
endeavors.
The sixteen competitors
(eight solo/duo and eight bands) in the finals where selected through a rigorous
competition that started in the home area and sponsored by the local blues
society. The winners of the local competitions meet in Memphis for two rounds
of quarter finals (held this past Tuesday and Wednesday nights in many clubs on
and around Beale Street in Memphis. 48
winners in the quarter finals advanced to the semi-finals held Friday night.
