The 31st International Blues Challenge will begin Tuesday night (Jan 20) with the International Showcase. Wednesday and Thursday night (January 21-22) quarter finals will be conducted. Youth Showcase and Semi Finals will be held Friday evening (Jan 23). Saturday (Jan 24) IBC will conclude with Finals in the beautiful Orpheum Theater .
The IBC is a five-day event that includes both band and solo/duo blues music competition, youth and international showcases and seminars . Typically, over 250 (band, solo/duo and youth) acts from 40 states and two dosen countries participate in the four rounds in Memphis. Significantly, the acts cannot enter directly, but are sponsored by one of our 200 affiliated organizations that are so critical to nurturing Blues culture in their own region. These events and awards are a culmination of activities undertaken by our affiliates and serve our mission by providing a vehicle through which they can promote, preserve and ensure the future of Blues music in their region via their own competitions to determine which up-and-coming act they will send to Memphis for a once-in-a-lifetime artistic and educational opportunity. The top acts receive cash prizes, professional services and career-changing gigs, and each year, competitors other than those judged as “winners” are “discovered” and as a result, doors open for their future musical endeavors.
- Roach Thompson Blues Band: 1991-92 W.C. Handy Award Winner-Recipient of the B.B. King Lucille Award for Best Unsigned Blues Band in the U.S.A.
- Piano Bob (Wilder) & The Snowman: 1992-93 W.C. Handy Award Winner-Recipient of the B.B. King Lucille Award for Best Unsigned Blues Band in the U.S.A.
- Joey Gilmore: 2006 winner of the International Blues Challenge.
- JP Soars and the Red Hots: 2009 International Blues Challenge winners.
- Selwyn Birchwood Band: 2013 International Blues Challenge winners.
- Ben Prestage: Three consecutive years took he 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place in the solo/duo category (need dates on this, please)
Jazz & Blues Florida wishes all participants well in the Challenge and congratulates all the societies for stepping up to do the work to get it done. We will not be judging any competitions in Florida this year, but look forward to sitting on the panels of the Magic City Blues Society and The Atlanta Blues Society for their competitions.
