Meets Broadway features Siegel, a founding member of the 9-time Grammy
Award winning group, The Manhattan Transfer. Joining Siegel will be the
stellar jazz pianist Shelly Berg with Chuck Bergeron on bass and John Yarling
on drums. Berg is also a Grammy nominated jazz artist and Dean of
the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.
This concert is a part of the Society’s 2014-15 jazz series and will take place at the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale at 7:45pm. Single tickets are available for $45 per person. Student and teacher tickets are $10 with valid ID. To purchase tickets call the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office at 1-800-745-3000 (Ticketmaster) or online at www.browardcenter.org. A pre-show jazz lecture and wine tasting by Lyn Farmer will take place in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom at 7:00pm and reservations are required.
For over three
decades, the voice of Janis Siegel has been an integral force in The Manhattan
Transfer. The nine-time Grammy winner and seventeen-time Grammy nominee has
also sustained a formidable solo career that has garnered critical
praise. Born in Brooklyn, Siegel was an early participant in the
music business, performing in pop and folk vocal groups. After a chance
meeting with Tim Hauser, Siegel was invited to join his four-part vocal group
and The Manhattan Transfer was born. Over the years, her unmistakable
voice became one of the group’s most recognizable trademarks. She sang
lead on some of the group’s biggest hits, including “Operator,” “Twilight
Zone,” “Birdland” and “The Boy from N.Y.C.” She
also gained a reputation as a vocal arranger by writing five of the charts for
the group’s acclaimed masterwork, Vocalese, seven charts for the group’s
Grammy-winning album Brasil, and won a Grammy herself in 1980 for her
arrangement of “Birdland.”
Siegel continued with The Transfer while launching her solo career and has performed a rich variety of music over the years including appearances with Bobby McFerrin, Fred Hersch, the Beaux Arts String Quartet, Natalie Cole, among others. She has also appeared on a number of movie soundtracks. Her discography includes “I Wish You Love” (2002), “Friday Night Special” (2003) Sketches of Broadway (2004) and “Night Songs,” her most recent CD released on the Telarc label.

Jazz pianist, Shelly Berg,
has mostly devoted himself to being a music educator and is Dean of the Frost
School of Music at the University of Miami. Shelly has also recorded
critically acclaimed albums. In 2006, he arranged most of the songs on the
album Ray Sings—Basie Swings (Concord 2006). His solo CDs include The Joy, on DMP records, and The
Will, for CARS Records. The Will reached the top ten in the Gavin Report. Shelly is the
pianist and arranger for trombonist Bill Watrous, and has appeared and/or
recorded with Woody Herman, Louis Bellson, Arnett Cobb, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie
Daniels, Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, Ed Thigpen, Gerald Albright, Ernie Watts
and Pete Christlieb.
His credits as a composer for television include
ABC's Fudge
and CBS's A League of Their Own. He has orchestrated for Kiss (Psycho Circus),
Chicago (Night and Day), Richard Marx (Flesh and Bone
and Elliot Smith (XO). He also orchestrates films, including the Warner
Brothers' releases Almost Heroes (1998) and Three To Tango
(1999). He has written for the Royal Philharmonic and American Symphony, as
well as orchestras in Los Angeles, Houston, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta.
