Tampa Jazz Club and HCC/Ybor Performing Arts Series Present:

Whitney James

with La Lucha

The Tampa Jazz Club and the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series will present vocalist Whitney James with the trio, La Lucha, on Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 PM in the Mainstage Theatre on the Ybor City Campus of HCC.

Whitney James doesn't just sing a tune -- she pairs incredible vocal skill with intimate, meaningful interpretations, at the same time bringing flawless intonation, a broad range of colors and sounds, and an instrumentalist’s sensibility to her interaction with the band. For this engagement she’ll be working with one of the Bay Area’s busiest and most accomplished trios, La Lucha, featuring pianist John O’Leary, bassist Alejandro Arenas, and drummer Mark Feinman.

Ms. James trained in opera and musical theater before becoming a protégé of master jazz vocalist Jay Clayton. Early in her career, she opened for jazz legends Nina Simone and Betty Carter and pop giants Earth Wind & Fire and Macy Gray. After extensive touring in the US and and appearances in France (Hot Brass, Café Blue) and England (Ronnie Scott’s), she emerged as a fully formed artist. Her 2010 debut album, The Nature of Love spent 16 weeks on the National JazzWeek Charts and received critical acclaim from US and International Jazz Press. In 2012, Whitney was chosen as one of the top twelve Rising Stars in the world of jazz and was featured on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz Rising Stars on NPR.

Be sure to join us for what will be a beautiful afternoon of music in a lovely Ybor City theater.
