…to South Florida. The sky
held a distant full moon. Stars sparkled. Le Chat Noir a mere 30 minute drive.
All by myself. No pretty lady alongside. Unfortunate!!!! But every cloud has a
silver lining. I will explain later.
The music this night at Le
Chat was to be Tango. The band, the Anibal Berraute Quartet. Anibal is the
director and pianist. The well-known Federico Britos plays violin. Yukie
Kawanami play the bandone and Renyel Rivero completes the quartet on bass. The
music started…
Yukie & Federico |
Authentic tango rhythm and
sound. The smell of the pampas in the air. The first solo was Federico's and it
set the tone for the rest of the evening. Intense and romantic. The next tune
was "It Might As Well Be Spring" done as an up-tempo tango. Anibal's
solo was interesting and Federico's soulful with the flavor of gypsy. The
rhythm of tango is compelling and I must learn to dance to it. Renyel played a
very complex bass solo that held your attention. Federico follows, slow and
easy. Yukie on the bandone has the underlying melody. It is so beautiful that
this old, salty, dog is almost brought to tears. Tango is precise. The music is
exact. It will pass from quick to slow. Most of all it spells romance.
"I Cover The
Waterfront" has Yukie featured along with Federico. Amor is in the cellar
of Le Chat Noir. And this why I am thankful that I am not accompanied by a
woman. I would have said something fateful and foolish. Couples around the room
were holding hands, looking deep into each other’s eyes, across tables for two.
Every solo injected romance into the room. How Yukie, born and raised in Japan
and only recently a resident in the U.S.A. has captured the rhythm of tango and
the difficulty of bandone is amazing.
By the time the 2nd set
started the room was filled. It seemed that it was 'couples only' night. A very
pretty----- no beautiful lady, arrived with a handsome young man. They
are Jenna Marie Streitenfeld and Kyle DeGailler.
Jenna and Kyle would get caught by the ambience and sat closer and closer with
every passing note. Yukie and Federico played a unison section that displayed
the depth of their musical talent. They play "Cumparsita" tango
style. The evening continues. Each of the band members contributing exquisite
moments to the night. The audience is transfixed. There is no conversation. We
are mesmerized by the magic of the music we are hearing.
The audience rises and
demands an encore as the set ends. Yuki introduces the tune and is followed by
a unison section and an incredible 32 bars of counterpoint. I usually include
tune titles in my review. The tunes mentioned here were the ones I recognized.
Titles don't mean a thing. It's the music that counts.
Gio had arrived late,
wearing a jacket and clean shaven. I inquired if it was possibly his Bah
Mitzva. I was treated to his life story. From selling watches for his Dad as a
boy to having six well known men’s fashion stores in Miami. How he and Alexis
and Ezzio ended up owning and working hard at making Le Chat Noir a success is
enough for a novelette by itself.
Thank you Anibel, Federico,
Renyel and Yukie for a wonderful night filled with love, music and tango.
Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
