Friday,
Dec 5th from 6:30pm-9pm
The Sunshine Jazz Organization is proud to continue our
co-sponsorship with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan and City
of Miami Gardens Councilwoman Felicia Robinson by bringing a diverse lineup of
live music to the public through Music in the Park, a FREE
community concert series presented at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreation Complex
Amphitheater. On Friday, December 5th from 6:30pm-9pm join us for a
world class group from New York City with Miami roots, “The Rodney Kendrick
Trio featuring vocalist Rhonda Ross”, plus music by local favorites from BNS
Entertainment.
Pianist Rodney Kendrick grew up
in Miami in a musical family. His mother Juet is a gospel singer and father is
James “Jimmy Kay” Kendrick, a pianist who worked with saxophonists Illinois
Jacquet, Sonny Stitt and Sam Rivers. At 18 Kendrick began touring with R&B
and funk acts including Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and James Brown. At
21 he moved to NYC and began to focus on jazz. He played with artists incl
Freddie Hubbard, Terence Blanchard and Clark Terry and in the ‘90s served as
Abbey Lincoln’s musical leader for 7 years. He has also recorded and produced
several albums. Rodney and Rhonda are the main features in the December issue of Jazz & Blues Florida.
Neo-Soul Jazz Stylist,
Rhonda Ross has an uplifting and resonant voice, unique phrasing and
authenticity to her art. As the only child of Diana Ross and Motown Founder
Berry Gordy, Rhonda's music is based in Black-American traditional jazz. In
1994 she married and began a musical collaboration with jazz pianist and
composer Rodney Kendrick. Through him, Rhonda commenced studying with the late
jazz great Abbey Lincoln. She headlined President Obama’s 2nd Inaugural
Ball, and received rave reviews at The Hollywood Bowl. Recent
performances include Montreal Int’l. Jazz Festival, Wolf Trap, and The Theater
at Madison Square Garden.
This bi-annual, free concert
event brings all ages together under the stars for a wonderful evening of
listening, dancing, and enjoying live music. Music in the Park
takes place at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreation Complex – Amphitheater,
offering plenty of seating and free parking - 3000 NW 199th Street,
