Since his debut release on Mack Avenue Records in 2013, pianist-composer Aaron Diehl has mystified listeners with his layered artistry. He reaches into expansion. At once temporal and ethereal — deliberate in touch and texture — his expression transforms the piano into an orchestral vessel in the spirit of beloved predecessors Ahmad Jamal, Erroll Garner, Art Tatum and Jelly Roll Morton. Moment to moment, he considers what instrument he’s moved to evoke. “This is a singular voice here, but maybe this section is a saxophone soli, or this piece here are high winds or low brass in the bass,” says the Steinway artist, describing his concept on the bandstand.

Following three critically-acclaimed leader albums, the American Pianist Association’s 2011 Cole Porter fellow now focuses his attention on what it means to be authentic, to be present within himself. His most recent release on Mack Avenue, The Vagabond, reveals his breadth as who The New York Times calls “a composer worth watching.” Across nine original tracks and works by Philip Glass and Sergei Prokofiev, Aaron leans into imagination and exploration. His forthcoming solo record, poised for release in spring 2021, promises an expansion of that search in a setting at once unbound and intimate.

WYCLIFFE GORDON

FACEBOOK EVENT - Invite your friends!

Trombone player Wycliffe Gordon is best known for his work with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of jazz maestro, Wynton Marsalis. The versatile trombonist can scat, multi-note, slide, and plunge, just like he stepped out of the 1930s. Gordon has played with many jazz luminaries, including Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Henderson, Branford Marsalis, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan, and Shirley Horn. His musical colleagues call him “Pine Cone,” since he grew up in the piney woods of Georgia.

It must have been this Ellington era quality that caught the ears of jazz educator Wynton Marsalis, who heard Gordon play while the trumpeter was giving a workshop at Gordon’s alma mater, Florida A&M University. Their fortuitous meeting resulted in Gordon joining the Wynton Marsalis Septet, as well as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, in 1989. As a member of the illustrious band, Gordon contributed as both musician and composer. Gordon, who like Charles Mingus says he hears music in his head all the time, has managed to write some of it down, and then hear it performed all over the world by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Whether they know it or not, National Public Radio fans are familiar with the musician’s work: In 1993, Gordon composed the NPR theme song.

Gordon, an admirer of Louis Armstrong, J.J. Johnson, and Jack Teagarden, prefers the melodic approach to playing and composition. The listener can hear that on any of his outstanding recordings. His first outing was with fellow trombonist Ron Westray on their 1996 release, Bone Structure. More good things came with Slidin’ Home, recorded in 1999. Joined by Victor Goines, Eric Reed, Rodney Whitaker, Herlin Riley, Milt Grayson, Joe Temperley, and Randy Sandke, Gordon really struts his stuff on this one, showing a wide range of influences from big band to gospel.

Backyard Blues w/ Tommy Lee Cook &
The Buckingham Blues Band opening.

Grammy-nominated composer, producer, vocalist, and award-winning entertainer and piano player; Victor Wainwright is a raucous high-octane, dynamic performer and crowd pleaser with soul to spare.

The name of Victor Wainwright's band - and the sleeve image of their albums - is also the most fitting of metaphors. In music folklore, “The Train” might have associations with the freight-hopping blues-men of yore, but with this restless boogie-woogie innovator stoking the furnace, Wainwright is a charging locomotive - surging forward, crashing through boundaries of genre, sweeping up fresh sounds and clattering headlong past the doubters.

As the man himself hollers in the ivory-pounding track, The Train: "If you wanna boogie get aboard the train/Get yourself a ticket or get out of the way..." At a sweet-spot in his career, where most established stars would rest on their laurels, Victor Wainwright & The Train instead rips up all that has gone before, pricking up ears in a sterile music industry and stretching the concept of roots in bold directions.

“I believe that for roots music to grow, and reach out to new audiences, we have to invite it forward,” Wainwright explains. The result is original music that walks a tightrope between scholarly respect and anarchic irreverence.

You'll hear Wainwright twist boogie-woogie tradition on barrel-house thrillers driven by his visceral piano style. But you'll also hear him fearlessly explore the gamut of genre, from Latin flavors and New Orleans piano to near-psychedelia jam. It's a musical cocktail served up by Wainwright's inimitable gravel-flecked vocal.

In truth, Wainwright has always been an artist that sets the pace. Born into a musical family in Savannah, Georgia, the formative influence of his father's vocals and grandfather's rolling boogie-woogie piano compelled him into a life of music. By 2005, he'd announced his talent with solo debut, Piana' From Savannah, while his central role in Southern Hospitality and partnership with Stephen Dees in WildRoots has seen him ignite stages and stereos for over a decade.

Among his numerous accolades: Wainwright has won seven total Blues Music Awards, charted #1 on the Top Ten in the Billboard Magazine, and was nominated for a 2019 Grammy for "Best Contemporary Blues Album" for Victor Wainwright & The Train (Ruf).

Within Us is the latest CD (2021) released by this groundbreaking all-star big band whose projects have garnered no less than 7 GRAMMY nominations! Founded in 1995, the Surge has been described as “inventive, colorful, playful, provocative, and swinging” – combining a foundation in the jazz tradition with pronounced influences of American folk, classical, funk, roots, and latin musics." Their sold-out Sept. 2021 CD release concert at Birdland in New York is indicative of the respect and enthusiasm this 19-piece ensemble has earned - recently heralded as simply “one of the best large jazz ensembles in the country” (New York Music Daily).

Critically acclaimed from its initial 1996 release (named one of the year’s 5 best jazz CDs by JazzTimes critic David Franklin), the band catapulted to the attention of a world-wide jazz audience with the release of A Comet’s Tail (2009) & River Runs (2013) – both of which received GRAMMY nominations for Best Instrumental Composition and/or Arrangements.

However, it was Whispers on the Wind, the ensemble’s 2017 release, that truly blew the roof off!! In addition to Four GRAMMY nominations (including Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album), the CD was also named #1 Big Band Album in the 39th Annual Jazz Station Awards amongst many other end of year honors. “A masterpiece.” (Sounds of Timeless Jazz).

The Surge has worked with a “Who’s Who” of jazz royalty over the years – performing at jazz fests, series, and major international jazz conferences with guest such as: Randy Brecker, Chick Corea, Bob Mintzer, Dave Liebman, Benny Golson, Nneena Freelon, Karin Allyson, and many others.

The Jazz Surge continues celebrating their 25th anniversary through the Spring of 2022, performing selections from “Within Us” (recently cited as “hands down one of the top 10 jazz albums of the year” by Lucid Culture) as well as audience favorites from earlier albums.

Chuck Owen’s compositions have been performed widely; by the Netherlands’ Metropole Orch., WDR Big Band, Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orch. and numerous others. The recipient of a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship and five individual GRAMMY nominations Chuck’s thoughtful, creative, evocative, and intensely personal work is steeped in the jazz tradition but draws liberally and often playfully from a diverse array of additional influences that include contemporary classical, American folk/roots music, Latin, funk. . .even country!

Since its founding in 1995, Owen’s primary creative outlet has been the 19-piece Jazz Surge for whom he has served as conductor, primary composer/arranger, and producer of each of the Surge’s highly feted CDs. Whispers On the Wind, the ensemble’s 2017 release was recognized with 4 Grammy Nominations while also named #1 Big Band Album in the annual Jazz Station Awards. River Runs (2013), a stunning 5-movement genre-bending orchestral/big band hybrid also netted Owen with nominations for best instrumental composition and arranging.

A committed, passionate, and nationally respected jazz educator for 40 years; Owen recently retired from teaching at the University of South Florida; but continues to serve as President of ISJAC (International Society of Jazz Arrangers & Composers), an organization he was instrumental in founding.
