"In what will probably be the last swinging night of music for us in SW Florida in the foreseeable future, the Terell Stafford Quintet featuring Tim Warfield, Bruce Barth, Nathan Pence and Billy Williams tore the roof off of the Sidney Berne Davis Art Center in Downtown Fort Myers.
Lew Del Gatto and I worked with Terell last week at Artis-Naples with the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra (sextet) and we had a beautiful time. This week, he was back with his own group from NYC. Lew, Don Mopsick, Tony Vigilante and I were playing at the Barrel Room at 7pm and Terell, Tim, Bruce, Nathan and Billy came to hang for the first 45 minutes at the club. Then they walked down the street three blocks and hit at SBDAC at 8pm. Lew, Judi Woods and I ran down there on our break and heard Terell and Bruce playing a gorgeous duo ballad on Candy followed by a cooking version of Lee Morgan's Speedball. We finished our night at the Barrel Room then heard them wrap up their evening with a burning rendition of Billy Strayhorn's Raincheck. Terell is a true inspiration. He has a magnificent TONE and his improvisations are absolutely spectacular.
We followed it all up with a nice, late hang with all the cats until the wee small hours. Safe travels to Terell, Tim and company. Thanks to Lew, Don and Tony for always swinging so hard and thanks to the wonderful crowd of friends/music lovers that came out last night and filled the club and the SBDAC including Gerald AugustinMark A TaylorRalph Douglas and his crew from NY/NJ. If this was indeed our final night of music for awhile, it couldn't have been more perfect."
