LENORE RAPHAEL TRIO:
TRIBUTE TO OSCAR PETERSON & MILT JACKSON,
on FEBRUARY 16, 2020 at HCC/YBOR CITY
The Tampa Jazz Club presents a top-tier band, honoring two of
the all-time jazz greats, when the LENORE RAPHAEL TRIO, featuring
STEVE HOBBS and HILLIARD GREENE, plays A TRIBUTE TO OSCAR PETERSON
& MILT JACKSON. The concert is at 3:00 on Sunday, February 16, 2020 in
the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City, as part of HCC’s Visual &
Performing Arts Series.
LENORE RAPHAEL, a recognized Steinway Artist, has a long
history of performances at major venues in New York as well as tours
ranging from England to South Africa, and has recorded 10 CDs as a
leader. Bill Evans and Bud Powell have been big influences, along
with her lifelong favorite, Oscar Peterson. In 2008, she had the
honor of performing at a memorial tribute to Peterson in his city of
Toronto, and played an original that is a trademark of her shows,
“Blues for O.P.”
Vibraphonist STEVE HOBBS is well-known to jazz listeners from
his many recordings over the past 30 years, which have featured
artists including Kenny Barron and Bob Sheppard, and have placed him
in the leading rank of vibes players. In this band, he pays tribute
to his favorite, Milt Jackson, with jazz classics such as “Bags’
Groove” and “Django.” And bassist HILLIARD GREENE is a rock-solid
veteran of the New York scene, having been Music Director for singer
Jimmy Scott for 20 years, and featured with pianists Cecil Taylor and
Don Pullen.
This trio began 2020 with a 10-concert tour on the West Coast
and is looking forward to their February swing through Tampa. They
will also be appearing on WUSF’s All Night Jazz, with Mike Cornette,
on the Saturday evening prior to their concert at HCC/Ybor City.
